Two novel and well‐defined polymers, poly[6‐(5‐(diphenylamino)‐2‐((4‐methoxyphenyl)diazenyl)phenoxy)hexyl methacrylate] (PDMMA) and poly[6‐(4‐((3‐ethynylphenyl)diazenyl) phenoxy)hexyl methacrylate] (PDPMMA), which bear triphenylamine (TPA) incorporated to azobenzene either directly (PDMMA) or with an interval (PDPMMA) as pendant groups were successfully prepared via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization technique. The electrochemical behaviors of PDPMMA and PDMMA were investigated by cyclic voltammograms (CV) measurement. The hole mobilities of the polymer films were determined by fitting the J‐V (current‐voltage) curve into the space‐charge‐limited current method. The influence of photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety on the behaviors of fluorescence emission, CV and hole mobilities of these two polymers were studied. The fluorescent emission intensities of these two polymers in CH2Cl2 were increased by about 100 times after UV irradiation. The oxidation peak currents (IOX) of the PDMMA and PDPMMA in CH2Cl2 were increased after UV irradiation. The photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety in PDMMA had significant effect on the electrochemical behavior, compared with that in PDPMMA. The changes of the hole mobility before and after UV irradiation were very small for both polymers. The HOMO energies (EHOMO, HOMO: the highest occupied molecular orbital) of side chain moieties of TPA incorporated with cis‐isomer and trans‐isomer of azobenzene in PDMMA and PDPMMA were obtained by theoretical calculation, which are basically consistent with the experimental results. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report systematic studies on a homologous series of twin liquid crystalline (LC) molecules based on phenyl and naphthyl azobenzene ( PnP and NpnNp ) as well as segmented copolyesters based on them. The twin series had the structure azobenzene–oligooxyethylene–azobenzene, where the ethyleneoxy length was varied from 2 to 6 units. The LC properties of the twin series depended on the chemical structure of the azochromophore and also the length of the central oligooxyethylene segment. The PnP series exhibited smectic LC properties for n > three oligooxyethylene units. Conversely, NpnNp series exhibited spherulitic phases only for the shortest member – Np2Np . One non‐LC short spacer twin ( P2P ) and one LC long spacer twin ( P6P ) were incorporated as part of a main chain polyester composed of fully aliphatic segments of sebacate and di or tetraethylene glycol (DEG/TEG) units by melt polycondensation. Non‐LC P2P formed LC polymers even at low (5 mol %) incorporation in DEG‐based copolymers, whereas the LC‐ P6P could do so only at 30 mol % incorporation. The LC properties of the twin molecules as well as copolymers were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy (PLM) along with variable temperature wide angle X‐ray diffraction. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Spatial orientation of carbohydrates is a meaningful parameter in carbohydrate recognition processes. To vary orientation of sugars with temporal and spatial resolution, photosensitive glycoconjugates with favorable photochromic properties appear to be opportune. Here, a series of azobenzene glycosides were synthesized, employing glycoside synthesis and Mills reaction, to allow “switching” of carbohydrate orientation by reversible E/Z isomerization of the azobenzene N=N double bond. Their photochromic properties were tested and effects of azobenzene substitution as well as the effect of anomeric configuration and the orientation of the sugars 2-hydroxy group were evaluated.  相似文献

Controlling the macroscopic orientation of nanoscale periodic structures of amphiphilic liquid crystalline block copolymers (LC BCPs) is important to a variety of technical applications (e.g., lithium conducting polymer electrolytes). To study LC BCP domain orientation, a series of LC BCPs containing a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block as a conventional hydrophilic coil block and LC blocks containing azobenzene mesogens is designed and synthesized. LC ordering in thin films of the BCP leads to the formation of highly ordered, microphase‐separated nanostructures, with hexagonally arranged PEO cylinders. Substitution on the tail of the azobenzene mesogen is shown to control the orientation of the PEO cylinders. When the substitution on the mesogenic tails is an alkyl chain, the PEO cylinders have a perpendicular orientation to the substrate surface, provided the thin film is above a critical thickness value. In contrast, when the substitution on the mesogenic tails has an ether group the PEO cylinders assemble parallel to the substrate surface regardless of the film thickness value. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New photochromic polymethacrylates with different spacer length having azobenzene side groups and lateral methyl substituents were synthesized. The phase behavior of polymethacrylates and their photooptical properties were studied and compared with unsubstituted analogues. It is shown that an introduction of lateral methyl substituents results in almost complete suppression of liquid crystalline (LC) phase formation and strong decrease of photoinduced dichroism values. It is found that rates of the photoinduced E‐Z isomerization and back thermal Z‐E isomerization are almost independent on spacer lengths. Due to the presence of lateral substituents, the photoinduced azobenzene Z‐form shows remarkable long lifetime, and back thermal conversion at room temperature takes more than 10 days. Specific peculiarities of the photoorientation process in polymer films under the polarized UV and visible light action were studied and their mechanism is suggested. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and macromolecular azo coupling reaction, both o‐nitrobenzyl (ONB) group and azobenzene group were efficiently incorporated into the center of the amphiphilic diblock copolymer chain. The prepared diblock copolymer was well characterized by UV–vis, 1H NMR, and GPC methods. Self‐assembly of the amphiphilic copolymer in selected solvents can result in uniform self‐assembly aggregates. In the presence of external stimuli [upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)/NIR light or enzyme], the amphiphilic diblock copolymer chain could be broken by the cleavage of ONB or azobenzene group, which would lead to the disruption of the self‐assembly aggregates. This photo‐ and enzyme‐triggered disruption process was proved by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and GPC method. Fluorescence emission spectra measurements indicated that the release of Nile red, a hydrophobic dye, encapsulated by the self‐assembly aggregates, could be successfully realized under the NIR light and enzyme stimuli. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel method for maskless micro-patterning of polymeric substrates is presented. First, an azobenzene functionalized polymer film is spin-coated on a Poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) sheet. Then surface relief structures are optically inscribed on the polymer film by interference of laser beams. The patterned azobenzene functionalized film is then etched in the plasma chamber such that the gratings are transferred to the PET substrate. Finally, any remaining azobenzene functionalized polymer is dissolved away using an appropriate solvent. This method of patterning can be broadly applied to a variety of flexible/polymeric substrates and the resolution is not limited by the substrate thermo-mechanical properties.  相似文献

Abstract

The quaterpolymerization of methylcyclopentadienyl-5-endo-norborn-2-enyl-methane with ethylene, propylene, and either endo- or exo-dicyclopentadiene was studied by using the catalyst system VAcac3-Et2AlCl. The influence of catalyst and polyenes concentrations, catalyst modifiers, and other polymerization parameters on the general properties of quaterpolymers was investigated. The polymers obtained showed a random distribution of the comonomeric units and the ability to covulcanize with 1,4-cis-polyisoprene.  相似文献

Three new series of bent-shaped molecules with 4-chlororesorcinol, 4-bromoresorcinol or 4-fluororesorcinol as the central unit, and azobenzene with different alkoxy chain length as side arms were synthesised. The mesophase behaviour was investigated by polarising optical microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. A representative example has also been characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. It is found that almost all of the materials prepared are monotropic liquid crystalline. Depending on the substituent at the central unit and on the chain length nematic phases, B6 phases, a B4-like dark conglomerate phase and a modulated/undulated anticlinic SmC phase were found. As a unique feature, upon reducing the chain length a transition from nematic to B6-type smectic phases was observed, which is reverse to usually observed phase sequences. The UV–vis absorption spectroscopy was also performed to study the effect of light-induced trans–cis-isomerisation on the prepared compounds.  相似文献
