Challenges in the structural characterization of thin organic films

This review addresses the special problems associated with the micro-structural characterization of thin and ultrathin organic films, primarily by optical spectroscopies. Films which are deposited by Langmuir-Blodgett techniques, self-assembly chemistry, and bulk film deposition techniques are considered. The use of enhanced optical excitation using surface phasma resonances and integrated optical structures is discussed extensively, as is the use of ellipsometry. Discussion of the spectroscopies used is broken into a section on electronic spectroscopies and an extensive discussion of vibrational spectroscopies. Vibrational information may be obtained with photons (absorption or scattering) or electrons (loss spectra), and the types of experimental systems amenable to each, along with the advantages and disadvantages of each are explored.

The i.r., u. v.,¹H n.m.r.,¹³C n.m.r., and¹¹B n.m.r. spectra of several substituted diphenylboron chelates derived from salicylaldehyde azomethines were compared with respect to the influence of the amine substituentR. O–B–N-6-ring constitution of the chelates29–32 [R=OH, NH₂, NHC₆H₅, N(CH₃)₂] can be deduced from the spectra.

Interaction of aryldiazonium salts with some schiff-base complexes of cobalt and ruthenium

The interaction of aryldiazonium ions with some Schiff-base complexes of cobalt and ruthenium have been studied. With cobalt, one-electron oxidation of [Co(II)Salen] occurred; with [Co(I)Salen] the corresponding Co(III)-aryl complexes were isolated. In the case of ruthenium oxidation also occurs, [Ru(Salen)(CO)py] gave the corresponding monocation. The results, especially for ruthenium, are in contrast to the stabilisation of both nitrosyl and aryldiazonium adducts in analogous porphyrin complexes.     

A Study of the Silylation of 1,8-Dihydroxynaphthalene

Twelve compounds each having a six membered Si-contained heterocycle, have been successfully synthesized. Of these eleven compounds have never been reported in the literature. The structures were confirmed by Spectral analysis and elementary analysis. The stability and properties of these compounds is also discussed.     

Der Gaskomplex MnAlF5 und sein Einfluß auf die sublimative Reinigung von AlF3

The Gas Complex MnAlF₅ and its Influence on the Purification of AlF₃ by Sublimation The gas complex MnAlF₅ has been determined mass spectroscopically by the ions MnAlF₅⁺ and MnAlF₄⁺. The gas complex MnAlF₅ is formed above 973 K by heating up mixtures of AlF₃/MnF₂ or AlF₃ · 3 H₂O endowed with Mn²⁺ or by heating up solid MnAlF₅ too. At 1 008 K the enthalpie of dissociation is 197 kJ/mole. The equilibrium structures of the high spin molecule MnAlF₅ (S = 5/2) were examined with ab initio calculations at the HF-level by comlete gradient optimizing. Two minimum structures were found on the potential energy surface. A bidentate fluorine bridged structure was found to be the most stable at the HF-level. Vibrational frequencies and thermodynamic functions of complex formation were estimated for both minimum structures. The importance of the formation of the gas complex for the separation of MnF₂ and AlF₃ by sublimation is discussed.     

Dynamics studies on thermoresponsive poly(<Emphasis Type="Italic">N</Emphasis>-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel in tetrahydrofuran/water mixtures

The properties of thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogel in tetrahydrofuran/H₂O mixtures were studied. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images demonstrate that the hydrogel changes from homogeneous to heterogeneous microstructure upon the addition of tetrahydrofuran to water. This heterogeneous PNIPAAm hydrogel in the mixture solvent exhibits a very slow response rate at temperatures above its lower critical solution temperature. The decreased response rate is attributed to the formation of special ternary complexes including the polymer and the two solvents in the tetrahydrofuran/H₂O mixture. Factors controlling the thermoresponse rate are discussed further and several suggestions are provided for designing and developing fast-response PNIPAAm hydrogels in the future.     

An NMR study of the rotational barriers in cobalt-stabilized carbocations: X-ray crystal structures of (η-C4Ph4)Co-(η-C5H4R), where R is CH3CO, CHO, CH(Bu)OH

Treatment of the aldehyde (η⁴-C₄Ph₄)Co(η⁵-C₅H₄-CHO) (4b) with tert-butyllithium or phenyllithium yields the secondary alcohols (η⁴-C₄Ph₄)Co(η⁵-C₅H₄-CH(R)OH), where R=tert-butyl (5) or phenyl (6). Protonation of 5 and 6 at −80 °C furnishes the deep purple, cobalt-stabilized cations, 7 and 8, respectively, both of which exhibit restricted rotation about the external C₅H₄-CHR⁺ linkage on the NMR time-scale. These data indicate a minimum value for the barrier to rotation of 15 kcal mol⁻¹, but it is certainly much higher, indicating a considerable degree of C-C double bond character. X-ray crystal structures of 4b, 5 and also of the ketone (η⁴-C₄Ph₄)Co(η⁵-C₅H₄-C(O)CH₃ (4a) are reported. The secondary alcohol 5 exhibits disorder in the solid state because of the presence of diastereomers as a consequence of the stereogenic center at the α-carbon and the clockwise or anticlockwise propeller orientations of the tetraphenylcyclobutadiene ligand.

Stereoselective preparation of spirane bridged, sandwiched bisarenes

Preparation of α-oxo derivatives of spiro[4.4]nonane, spiro[4.5]decane and spiro[5.5]undecane derivatives is described. An efficient method for spiroannulation by Rh(I)-catalysed intramolecular hydroacylation provides α,α′-difunctionalised spiro[4.5]decanes. The α,α′-dioxo groups have been converted into vinyl triflates for arylation by Pd-catalysed cross-coupling reactions under Stille, Negishi or Suzuki conditions depending on relative reactivities. Stereoselective saturation of the conjugated aryl olefinic bonds by catalytic hydrogenation over Pd-carbon provides methodology for stereoselective preparation of α-aryl- and α,α′-cis,cis-diaryl spiranes, the latter with a sandwich like structure. Single crystal X-ray analyses have been used in the structural assignments.     

Studies on some oxovanadium(IV) complexes of acyl pyrazolone analogues

A series of novel bidentate pyrazolone based Schiff base ligands were synthesized by interaction of 4-benzoyl-3-methyl-1-(4′-methylphenyl)-2-pyrazolin-5-one with various aromatic amines like aniline, o-,m-,p-chloroaniline and o-,m-,p-toluidine in a ethanolic medium. All of these ligands have been characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, IR and ¹H NMR data. The molecular geometries of five of these ligands have been determined by single crystal X-ray study. Crystallographic study reveals that these ligands exist in the amine-one tautomeric form in the solid state. NMR study also suggests the existence of the amine-one form in solution at room temperature. Ab initio calculations for representative ligand HL¹ has been carried out to know the coordination site of the ligand. Novel vanadium Schiff base complexes of these ligands with general formula [OV(L^1–7)₂(H₂O)] have been prepared by interaction of aqueous solution of vanadyl sulfate pentahydrate with DMF solution of the appropriate ligands. The resulting complexes have been characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, vanadium determination, molar conductance and magnetic measurements, thermo gravimetric analysis, infrared and electronic spectral studies. Suitable distorted octahedral structures have been proposed for these complexes.
