Asymptotic formulations of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a boundary value problem

In this work, a discontinuous boundary‐value problem with retarded argument that contains a spectral parameter in the transmission conditions at the point of discontinuity is investigated. A Dual Dynamic Programming for Multidimensional Elliptic Optimal Control Problems

This paper deals with the optimal control problems with multiple integrals and an elliptic partial differential equation. The sufficient conditions for optimality in these problems are proved through a dual dynamic programming. The concept of an optimal dual feedback is introduced, and the theorem guaranteeing its existence is established. For the purposes of numerical methods, the ε-version of the verification theorem provided appears to be very useful.     

Regularized Versions of Continuous Newton's Method and Continuous Modified Newton's Method Under General Source Conditions

Regularized versions of continuous analogues of Newton's method and modified Newton's method for obtaining approximate solutions to a nonlinear ill-posed operator equation of the form F(u) = f, where F is a monotone operator defined from a Hilbert space H into itself, have been studied in the literature. For such methods, error estimates are available only under Hölder-type source conditions on the solution. In this paper, presenting the background materials systematically, we derive error estimates under a general source condition. For the special case of the regularized modified Newton's method under a Hölder-type source condition, we also carry out error analysis by replacing the monotonicity of F by a weaker assumption. This analysis facilitates inclusion of certain examples of parameter identification problems, which was not possible otherwise. Moreover, an a priori stopping rule is considered when we have a noisy data f _δ instead of f. This rule yields not only convergence of the regularized approximations to the exact solution as the noise level δ tends to zero but also provides convergence rates that are optimal under the source conditions considered.     

Superlinear PCG Algorithms: Symmetric Part Preconditioning and Boundary Conditions

The superlinear convergence of the preconditioned CGM is studied for nonsymmetric elliptic problems (convection-diffusion equations) with mixed boundary conditions. A mesh independent rate of superlinear convergence is given when symmetric part preconditioning is applied to the FEM discretizations of the BVP. This is the extension of a similar result of the author for Dirichlet problems. The discussion relies on suitably developed Hilbert space theory for linear operators.     

A “Discretization” Technique for the Solution of ODEs II

A functional analytic technique was recently presented for finding discrete equivalent counterparts of initial value problems of ODEs and obtaining their real analytic solutions. In the current paper, this technique is extended to boundary value problems of ODEs and to the complex solutions of ODEs. In order to demonstrate this technique, it is applied to the classic Blasius problem of fluid mechanics. Apart from its real solution, its complex solution is also studied. The obtained results indicate that the complex Blasius function exhibits an oscillatory behavior and strengthen a conjecture regarding its singularities in the complex plane.     

About q-approximations and q-hulls over a Noetherian ring,some refinements of the Auslander-Bridger theory

We revisit the notion of q-approximations for a module over a Noetherian ring, originally due to Auslander and Bridger without a name and rediscovered later by Evans and Griffith. We introduce a somewhat symmetric notion of q-hull and provide existence theorems for both q-approximations and q-hulls. The main feature here are existence theorems and characterizations of minimal such ones when the ring is local. The q-hulls being close to the morphism obtained by Auslander and Bridger in their “approximation theorem”, we also obtain for the latter a minimal statement in the case when the ring is local.     

Reverse Order Law for the Group Inverse in Semigroups and Rings

In this paper, we provide equivalent conditions for the two-sided reverse order law for the group inverse (ab)^# = b ^# a ^# and (ba)^# = a ^# b ^#, in semigroups and rings. Moreover, we prove that, under finiteness conditions, these conditions are also equivalent with the one-sided reverse order law (ab)^# = b ^# a ^#.     

Crystal growth,crystal structure and physical properties of polar orthorhombic tris(glycine) zinc chloride

Large single crystals of the polar (point group mm 2) compound tris(glycine) zinc chloride, (NH₃CH₂COO)₃ · ZnCl₂, were grown from aqueous solutions. The refractive indices were measured in the wavelength region from 365 nm to 1083 nm and an unpolarised absorption spectrum was recorded (transparency range from 260 to 1550nm). The phase matching conditions for second harmonic generation were analysed: both, type I (ss‐f) and type II (sf‐f) are possible in the red and near IR region. All five components of the piezoelectric tensor [d_ijk ] were determined; the maximum values of longitudinal and transverse piezoelectric effects are less than one half of d₁₁₁ of α‐quartz. In addition, a redetermination of the crystal structure (including location of H atoms) is presented. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
