The number of viable ecological trophic networks

The network trophic theory tries to explain the working of basic ecosystems by studying the trophic connections between species. A basic model that helps us to understand some rules that have been followed in the ecosystems is the one known as the model of trophic cascade. By following these ecological criteria, the algorithm that we present allows us to determine the number of viable trophic networks, taking into account the number of trophic levels, the maximum number of species at each level and the links between the different species. A development for five levels is shown.     

Intuitionistic notions of boundedness in ℕ

We consider notions of boundedness of subsets of the natural numbers ? that occur when doing mathematics in the context of intuitionistic logic. We obtain a new characterization of the notion of a pseudobounded subset and we formulate the closely related notion of a detachably finite subset. We establish metric equivalents for a subset of ? to be detachably finite and to satisfy the ascending chain condition. Following Ishihara, we spell out the relationship between detachable finiteness and sequential continuity. Most of the results do not require countable choice. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The axioms of iteration 2-theories capture, up to isomorphism, the equational properties of iteration in conjunction with horizontal and vertical composition in all algebraically complete categories. We give a concrete representation of the free iteration 2-theory generated by a 2-signature.     

All optical switching in semiconductor microresonators based on pattern selection

We present here a method for selecting optical patterns in a passive semiconductor microresonator, by using a spatial perturbation. A pattern is spontaneously generated in the system, and a switching beam causes this pattern to rotate even if the power in the switching beam is much lower than the power in the pattern. Thus, an all optical switch is realized, that operates at low light levels.     

Interface control of high-k gate dielectrics on Ge

Important progress has been made in the passivation of Ge/gate dielectric interfaces. One important approach is by thermally oxidized GeO₂ interface and ALD high-k layers, with an interface state density D_it ∼ 2 × 10¹¹ cm⁻² eV⁻¹. Another approach is with an epi-Si/SiO₂ interface, resulting in similar D_it. Hysteresis and V_th shift, however, are still not optimal. Extensive material characterization and theoretical insights help us understanding the root cause of these remaining issues and show the way to improved interface control.

Are there realistically interpretable local theories?

Although it rests on strongly established proofs, the statement that no realistically interpretable local theory is compatible with some experimentally testable predictions of quantum mechanics seems at first sight to be incompatible with a few general ideas and clear-cut statements occurring in recent theoretical work by Griffiths, Omnès, and Ballentine and Jarrett. It is shown here that in fact none of the developments due to these authors can be considered as a realistically interpretable local theory, so that there is no valid reason for suspecting that the existing proofs of the statement in question are all flawed.
