In this work, we aim to observe and study the physics of bacteria and cancer cells pearl chain formation under dielectrophoresis (DEP). Experimentally, we visualized the formation of Bacillus subtilis bacterial pearl chain and human breast cancer cell (MCF-7) chain under positive and negative dielectrophoretic force, respectively. Through a simple simulation with creeping flow, AC/DC electric fields, and particle tracing modules in COMSOL, we examined the mechanism by which bacteria self-organize into a pearl chain across the gap between two electrodes via DEP. Our simulation results reveal that the region of greatest positive DEP force shifts from the electrode edge to the leading edge of the pearl chain, thus guiding the trajectories of free-flowing particles toward the leading edge via positive DEP. Our findings additionally highlight the mechanism why the free-flowing particles are more likely to join the existing pearl chain rather than starting a new pearl chain. This phenomenon is primarily due to the increase in magnitude of electric field gradient, and hence DEP force exerted, with the shortening gap between the pearl chain leading edge and the adjacent electrode. The findings shed light on the observed behavior of preferential pearl chain formation across electrode gaps.  相似文献

Thermophoresis of charged spheroids has been widely applied in biology and medical science. In this work, we report an analysis of the anisotropic thermophoresis of diluted spheroidal colloids in aqueous media for extremely thin EDL cases. Under the boundary layer approximation, we formulate the thermophoretic velocity, the thermophoretic force, and the thermodiffusion coefficient of a randomly dispersed spheroid. The parametric studies show that under the aforementioned conditions, the thermophoresis is anisotropic and its thermodiffusion coefficient should be considered as a vector, D T. The thermodiffusion coefficient values and directions of D T are strongly related to the aspect ratio and the angle θ between the externally applied temperature gradient and the particle's axis of revolution: The increasing aspect ratio enlarges the thermodiffusion coefficient value DT of prolate (oblate) spheroids to a constant value when θ < 60° (θ > 45°), and it reduces DT of prolate (oblate) spheroids to a constant value when θ > 60° (θ < 45°). The thermodiffusion coefficient direction of both prolate and oblate spheroids deviates slightly from −∇T for a small aspect ratio, and such deviation becomes serious for a large aspect ratio.  相似文献

Image deconvolution analyses showed that reversion of S-Al2CuMg precipitates occurred in an Al–Cu–Mg alloy during high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations. A fraction of Mg and Cu atoms in the precipitates diffused into Al matrix due to electron beam irradiation at 300 kV, resulting in structural/chemical reversion of the precipitates. The structural reversion of the S-Al2CuMg precipitates is closely related with irradiation-induced displacement of atoms. The strong attraction between Cu and Mg atoms might assist the sub-threshold displacement of Cu atoms. One transitional structure is determined to be S′′-Al10Cu3Mg3, a precursor of S-Al2CuMg. Two other transitional structures, Al3CuMg and Al18Cu5Mg5 which have the same lattice parameters of a = c = 0.405 nm as that of S′′-Al10Cu3Mg3, but different b values, are suggested.  相似文献

α-Actinin is involved in the assembly and maintenance of muscle fibers. α-Actinin is required to cross-link actin filaments and to connect the actin cytoskeleton to the cell membrane and it is necessary for the attachment of actin filaments to Z-disks in skeletal muscle fibers and to dense bodies in smooth muscle ones. In addition to its mechanical role, sarcomeric α-actinin interacts with proteins involved in a variety of signaling and metabolic pathways.The aim of this work is to monitor Z-disk formation, in order to clear up the role of sarcomeric α-actinin in undifferentiated stage, after 4 days of differentiation (intermediate differentiation stage) and after 7 days of differentiation (fully differentiated stage). For this purpose, C2C12 murine skeletal muscle cells, grown in vitro, were analyzed at three time points of differentiation.Confocal laser scanner microscopy and transmission electron microscopy have been utilized for α-actinin immunolocalization.Both techniques reveal that in undifferentiated cells labeling appears uniformly distributed in the cytoplasm with punctate α-actinin Z-bodies. Moreover, we found that when differentiation is induced, α-actinin links at first membrane-associated proteins, then it aligns longitudinally across the cytoplasm and finally binds actin, giving rise to Z-disks. These findings evidence α-actinin involvement in sarcomeric development, suggesting for this protein an important role in stabilizing the muscle contractile apparatus.  相似文献

Threshold switching is a phenomenon where the resistivity of an insulating material changes and the insulator exhibits metallic behavior. This could be explained by phase transformation in oxide materials; however, this behavior is also seen in amorphous insulators. In this study, through an ex-situ experiment using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we proved that threshold switching of amorphous NbO2 accompanies local crystallization. The change in I–V characteristics after electroforming was examined by evaluating the concentration profile. Atom probe tomography (APT) combined with in-situ TEM probing technique was performed to understand the threshold switching in amorphous NbO2. The local crystallization in amorphous NbO2 was validated by the observed difference in time-of-flight (ToF) between amorphous and crystalline NbO2. We concluded that the slower ToF of amorphous NbO2 (a-NbO2) compared with crystalline NbO2 (c-NbO2) is due to the resistivity difference and trap-assisted recombination.  相似文献

The free vibration analysis of a carbon nanotube (CNT) embedded in a volume element is performed using 3D finite element (FE) and analytical models. Three approaches consist of molecular and continuum mechanics FE methods and continuum analytical method are employed to simulate the CNT, interphase region and surrounding matrix. The bonding between CNT and polymer is treated as non-perfect bonding using van der Waals and triple phase material interaction in first and second approaches. In analytical approach a perfect bonding is assumed between nanotube and matrix. First, natural frequencies of CNT under different boundary conditions and aspect ratios are obtained by three approaches and the results are compared with published data. The results show the frequency response variations of CNT in GHz to THz range. Subsequently, vibration behaviors of CNT/polymer are evaluated and the results revealed the importance of interphase region role in the performance of nanocomposites. The results also showed the convergence of the natural frequencies for 1–2.5% of CNT volume in high aspect ratios using three methods, so that the interphase effects is negligible. In addition, it is observed that the molecular method due to interphase role has proper performance in vibration behavior investigation of volume elements.  相似文献

Principal role of substrate types on the nonlinear optical properties of Au NP was investigated. Third harmonic generation (THG) studies were carried out for Au NP deposited on the Al-doped ZnO (AuNP/AZO) and Ga-doped ZnO (AuNP/GZO) substrates at fundamental wavelength of 20 ns Er:glass laser (generating at 1540 nm wavelength) during photostimulation by the 532 nm 15 ns laser pulses. Sizes of Au NP were 5 nm, 10 nm, 20 nm, and 30 nm. The output signal was registered at 513 nm. The photoinduced power density was increased from 0 up to 800 MW/cm2. So in our work we explore the role of the substrate on the optically stimulated non-linear optical properties during simultaneous photo stimulation near the inter-band transition. The results were studied depending on the type of substrate and the sizes of the deposited nanoparticles. The analysis was done within a framework of interaction between the photoinduced light and SPR wavelengths. Control of the photoinduced temperature was done.  相似文献

The synthesis of nine enantiopure structured triacylglycerols (TAGs) of the AAB type is described, all possessing the (S)-absolute configuration. Six of them possess one saturated and two identical unsaturated fatty acyl chains, whereas the remaining three possess two identical saturated fatty acids along with one unsaturated fatty acid. The former group was synthesized by a five-step chemoenzymatic route involving a highly regioselective immobilized Candida antarctica lipase, starting from enantiopure (R)-solketal. The second group was prepared by a fully chemical five-step approach based on the same chiral precursor. Such enantiopure TAGs are strongly required as standards for the enantiospecific analysis of intact TAGs in fats and oils.  相似文献
