Irradiation crosslinking and halogen-free flame retardation of EVA using hydrotalcite and red phosphorus

Halogen-free flame retarded ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) composites using Mg-Al-CO₃ hydrotalcite (MALDH) and microcapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) have been prepared in a melt process. The flame retardation of the composites has been studied by the limited oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 methods, and the thermal decomposition by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The changes of their properties of the composites before and after the Gamma irradiation are compared. The synergistic effect in the flame retardation between MALDH and MRP in EVA has been found. The EVA/MALDH/MRP composites after the irradiation crosslinking result in a great increase in the Vicat softening point. The LOI value, the mechanical properties and thermal stability are also improved for the composites irradiated by a suitable irradiation dose.     

Sugar amino acids at the anomeric position of carbohydrates: synthesis of spirocyclic amino acids of 6-deoxy-l-lyxofuranose

Two anomeric spirodiketopiperazines and one spirohydantoin of 6-deoxy-l-lyxofuranose have been prepared from l-fucono-δ-lactone via ring contraction to the corresponding tetrahydrofuran carboxylate and anomeric functionalization including regioselective bromination and azide displacement.     

Asymmetric synthesis of homo-apioneplanocin A from d-ribose

Homo-apioneplanocin A was efficiently synthesized via stereoselective hydroxymethylation, regio- and chemoselective hydroboration, and chemoselective oxidation as key steps from d-ribose.     

Organometallic cluster analogues of tamoxifen: Synthesis and biochemical assay

Simple organometallic cluster analogues of tamoxifen containing triosmium or dicobalt carbonyl fragments have been prepared. Attempts at elaboration of these towards the tamoxifen skeleton were hampered by sensitivity of the cluster–ligand linkage towards the McMurry coupling conditions. Preliminary biological tests on various substrates indicate that the transition metal carbonyl fragment increases lipophilicity dramatically and reduces affinity for the estrogen receptor.     

First law of thermodynamics and Friedmann-like equations in braneworld cosmology

We derive the Friedmann-like equations in braneworld cosmology by imposing the first law of thermodynamics and Bekenstein's area-entropy formula on the apparent horizon of a Friedmann–Robertson–Walker universe in both Randall–Sundrum II gravity and Dvali–Gabadadze–Porrati gravity models. Israel's boundary condition plays an important role in our calculations in both cases, besides the first law of thermodynamics and Bekenstein's area-entropy formula. The results indicate that thermodynamics on the brane world knows the behaviors of gravity.     

Fluorescent oligonucleotide incorporating 5-(1-ethynylpyrenyl)-2-deoxyuridine: sequence-specific fluorescence changes upon duplex formation

We describe the design and properties of a pyrene-labeled deoxyuridine that can be inserted efficiently into oligodeoxynucleotides using phosphoramidite chemistry. An oligonucleotide incorporating the pyrene-labeled deoxyuridine is a sensitive fluorescence probe that can discriminate between perfect and single-base-mismatched pairing by changes in its fluorescence intensity.     

On removable even circuits in graphs

Let G be a connected graph with minimum degree at least 3. We prove that there exists an even circuit C in G such that G−E(C) is either connected or contains precisely two components one of which is isomorphic to a 1-bond. We further prove sufficient conditions for there to exist an even circuit C in a 2-connected simple graph G such that G−E(C) is 2-connected. As a consequence of this, we obtain sufficient conditions for there to exist an even circuit C in a 2-connected graph G for which G−E(C) is 2-connected.     

Receiver set partitioning and sequencing for multicasting traffic in a WDM lightwave single-hop network

This paper considers a receiver set partitioning and sequencing problem in a wavelength division multiplexing single-hop lightwave network for multicasting traffic. The problem is analysed in the approach of uncapacitated single batch-processing machine scheduling. In the analysis, several solution properties are characterized with respect to a mean flow time measure, based upon which two heuristic algorithms are developed, along with a dynamic programming algorithm. Several numerical experiments show that the heuristic algorithms generate good schedules. The problem is extended to consider two measures simultaneously including the mean flow time and the number of transmissions, for which the proposed algorithms also perform well.     

Stereoselective synthesis of (+)-lauthisan

Stereoselective synthesis of (+)-lauthisan has been accomplished starting from d-glyceraldehyde acetonide by combination of diastereoselective alkylation and ring-closing metathesis. High degree of 1,3-asymmetric induction has been realized in ether system.     

Effect of photoinitiator on photopolymerization of inorganic–organic hybrid polymers (ORMOCER®)

Inorganic–organic hybrid polymers have been developed and tested for evaluation in optical and electrical applications. Although hybrid inorganic–organic polymers can be synthesized by sol–gel chemistry at first, the physical properties of hybrid inorganic–organic polymers are changed during thin film-making processes, that is, photocuring and thermal curing. To investigate the effect of photoinitiator on the material properties during processing, a model system containing methacrylic groups as organically polymerizable units was selected. The conversion of CC double bond of methacrylic groups depending on some kinds of photoinitiator quantities was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was confirmed to correlate the degree of CC double bond conversion with the refractive indices. Thermodynamically, the enthalpy of the photopolymerization of hybrid polymer was investigated by UV–DSC. UV–DSC spectra showed the exothermic nature of photopolymerization of ORMOCER® to be in dependence of photoinitiator quantities. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
