Formation of a silicato complex of zinc in aqueous solution and its accelerating effect on the formation of silica scales in cooling water systems

This study elucidates the effect of zinc (Zn), which is an anticorrosive water additive, on the formation of silica scales from cooling water. In these experiments, the silica scales were analyzed by EPMA, and the results indicate that Zn is sorbed into the silica scales during formation. Measurements of the solubility of Zn(OH)(2) at various concentrations of silicic acid demonstrate that Zn is present as a silicato complex of Zn (SCZ) in cooling water. From adsorption experiments of the SCZ on silica and alumina, which are major components of the silica scales, it can be concluded that the SCZ accelerates the formation of silica scales from cooling water.     

Thermoreversible gelation of isotactic-rich poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) in water

We report the experimentally determined phase diagram for an aqueous solution of isotactic-rich poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAM) composed of the sol-gel transition curve and the cloud-point curve. The meso diad content of isotactic-rich PNiPAM is 64%, and it is soluble in water at low temperatures, but undergoes a sol-to-gel transition with increasing temperature in the investigated concentration range of 1.8 wt. %-6.0 wt. %. With a further increase in temperature, the system becomes turbid. The gel formation and clouding behavior are thermally reversible. This is the first observation of thermoreversible gelation under the cloud-point temperature for an aqueous solution of PNiPAM. On the basis of the determined phase diagram, we carried out light scattering experiments to characterize the sol-gel transition behavior as a function of temperature.     

Ab initio quantum Monte Carlo study of the binding of a positron to alkali-metal hydrides

Quantum Monte Carlo methods are used to investigate the binding of a positron to the alkali-metal hydrides, XH (X = Na and K). We obtain positron affinities for the NaH and KH molecules of 1.422(10) eV and 2.051(39) eV, respectively. These are considerably larger than the previous results of 1.035 eV and 1.273 eV obtained from multireference single- and double-excitation configuration interaction calculations. Together with our previous results for [LiH;e(+)] [Y. Kita et al., J. Chem. Phys. 131, 134310 (2009)], our study confirms the strong correlation between the positron affinity and dipole moment of alkali-metal hydrides.     

Experimental assessment of quasi-binary picture of thermotropics: induced smectic A phase in 7CB-n-heptane system

Quasi-binary (QB) picture of thermotropics, which regards a neat thermotropic liquid crystal as a binary system consisting of (semi)rigid core and molten alkyl chain, was assessed experimentally for the most famous (and representative) thermotropic mesogenic series nCB. By adding n-heptane as solvent, the smectic A phase was induced in 7CB-n-heptane system. Small angle x-ray diffraction showed that the QB picture holds not only in the phase behavior but also in the structure. It is suggested that the melting of 8CB and 9CB to isotropic liquid via smectic and nematic liquid crystals can be understood as a thermotropic-lyotropic crossover.     

Intramolecular iodoetherification of ene or diene ketals: facile synthesis of spiroketals

A novel and rapid approach to chiral mono- or di-substituted spiroketals based on remote asymmetric induction by intramolecular iodoetherification of ene or diene ketals has been developed. This strategy concisely offers 5,5- and 5,6-spiroketals including the natural insect pheromone of the wasp.     

Ellagic Acid Suppresses ApoB Secretion and Enhances ApoA-1 Secretion from Human Hepatoma Cells,HepG2

The effect of ellagic acid (EA), a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound, on the secretion of apolipoproteins from human hepatocytes, HepG2, was investigated. The levels of apoB and apoA-1 secreted in the cell culture medium were determined by sandwich ELISA. EA did not affect cell viability at the tested concentrations (up to 50 µM). EA suppressed the secretion of apoB and enhanced that of apoA-1 from HepG2 cells. However, cellular apoB levels were increased, suggesting that EA inhibited the trafficking of apoB during the process of secretion. In contrast, the increase in the cellular levels of apoA-1 was consistent with its secreted levels. These results indicate that EA inhibits the secretion of apoB from hepatocytes and increases the secretion of apoA-1. Both of these effects are beneficial for lipoprotein metabolism in the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases. The detailed mechanism underlying these effects of EA on lipoprotein metabolism should be elucidated in the future, but this naturally occurring polyphenolic compound might be antihyperlipidemic. Based on these results, EA is suggested as a candidate food-derived compound for the prevention of hyperlipidemia.     

Interactions between brushlike polyacrylic acid side chains on a polyacrylate backbone in dioxane-water.

Densely grafted polyacrylic acids (d-PAAs) with overcrowded PAA side chains on the polyacrylate main chains were synthesized and characterized. Acryloyl poly(tert-butyl acrylate) macromonomer [M-P(tert-BA)] was prepared with a definite chain length (n=29) by atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), then homopolymerization was carried out to produce densely grafted P(tert-BA)s with polyacrylate main chains of two different lengths (m=27 and 161). The two d-PAAs were obtained by hydrolyzing d-P(tert-BA)s in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). The d-PAAs exhibit intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic groups of PAA side chains in dioxane and pyridine; both were investigated using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding was found to be dependent on polymer concentration, temperature, and water content. The intramolecular association between the PAA side chains was found to produce a contraction of the hydrodynamic volume of the d-PAA. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding produces aggregates, as demonstrated by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The clusters were found to shrink as the overall water concentration decreased, and this effect is tentatively explained by considering the gradient in chemical potential of water inside the clusters in comparison with the solvent phase.     

Synthesis of polyester dendrimers and dendrons starting from Michael reaction of acrylates with 3-hydroxyacetophenone

A new AB₂ type building block for synthesis of dendritic compounds is made starting from Michael addition of 2 equiv of 3-hydroxyacetophenone to acrylate, followed by decarboxylation and deprotection of either carboxyl or hydroxyl protecting groups. [G1]-[G4] dendrons and [G2] dendrimer were synthesized by the reiterative [hydrogenolysis then DCC/DPTS coupling] sequence using a combination of convergent and divergent growth methods.     

The chemistry of O-silylated ketene acetals; diastereoselective Aldol reaction of 2,3-O-isopropylidene-D (and L)-glyceraldehydes leading to 2-deoxy-D (and L)-riboses

Diastereoselective carbon-carbon bond forming reaction of 2,3-O-isopropylidene-D (and L)-glyceraldehydes (D and L-2) with ketene silyl acetals (1a,b) occurred in acetonitrile under mild conditions to give the corresponding $\text{anti}$-β-siloxyesters (D and L-3a) as major products, which could be converted through a few additional steps to 2-deoxy-D(and L)-riboses.
