Conformation of poly(<Emphasis Type="SmallCaps">l</Emphasis>-glutamic acid) in bipolar amphiphiles with alkyl ammonium cations of different hydrophobicity

The conformation of the sodium salt of poly(l-glutamic acid) (P(Glu)) in solutions of the cationic bipolar amphiphile 1, 20-isosanediylbis(alkylammonium chloride) (C ₂₀(RA) ₂) with different alkyl head groups as a function of amphiphile concentration was investigated using circular dichroism (CD). RA included methylammonium (MA), ethylammonium (EA), propylammonium (PA), butylammonium (BA), and pentylammonium (PeA) cationic groups. The CD spectrum of each C ₂₀(RA) ₂ had a double minima corresponding to the a-helix of P(Glu), which was replaced by CD spectra with a single minimum at wavelengths larger than 222 nm as concentration increased. These changes in the CD spectrum were ascribed to the conformational change from random coil to a-helix and to aggregates of helices. In C ₂₀(EA) ₂ solutions, a step-like change in the CD intensity was observed at 222 nm as a function of the ratio of C ₂₀(RA) ₂ to P(Glu). At the step, the CD spectrum of the complete a-helix was observed. At 10–35 °C, an a-helix was induced in P(Glu) in the order: C ₂₀(EA) ₂>C ₂₀(MA) ₂>C ₂₀(PA) ₂>C ₂₀(BA) ₂>C ₂₀(PeA) ₂. This order was ascribed to the best fit of ethylammonium to the P(Glu) side chain.     

Ageladine A: an antiangiogenic matrixmetalloproteinase inhibitor from the marine sponge Agelas nakamurai

A novel MMP inhibitor, ageladine A (1) with antiangiogenic activity was isolated from a marine sponge Agelas nakamurai. Structure 1 was determined by a combination of spectroscopic and chemical methods to be an unprecedented structure of 4-(4,5-dibromo-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)]-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridin-2-amine.     

Photoinduced electron-transfer systems consisting of electron-donating pyrenes or anthracenes and benzimidazolines for reductive transformation of carbonyl compounds

Photoinduced electron-transfer reactions of several ketone substrates were studied to evaluate the utilities of 1,6-bis(dimethylamino)pyrene (BDMAP), 1,6-dimethoxypyrene (DMP), 9,10-bis(dimethylamino)anthracene (BDMAA), and 9,10-dimethoxyanthracene (DMA) as electron-donating sensitizers cooperating with 2-aryl-1,3-dimethylbenzimidazolines. BDMAP and DMP generally led higher conversion of ketones and better yield of reduction products compared to BDMAA and DMA.     

Carbazoledioxazines having long alkyl groups. 2. Synthesis of carbazoledioxazines with angular type structure

Carbazoledioxazines with an angular type structure (5,15-dialkyl-7,17-dialkyloxy-9,19-dichloro-5,15-dihydrodiindolo[2,3-c:2′,3′-n]triphenodioxazines) were selectively synthesized by electrochemical oxidative ring closure of precursors (2,5-bis(9-alkyl-2-alkyloxy-3-carbazolylamino)-3,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinones). The structure was confirmed by ¹H-nmr and other instrumental analyses. Their thermal properties and solubilities were investigated and were compared with those of carbazoledioxazines with a linear type structure.     

New technology for selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia to nitrogen

The selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) of ammonia to N₂ was studied by using a series of noble metal-V₂O₅-WO₃ catalysts supported on titania-silica (TS) prepared by coprecipitation method. In the V₂O₅-WO₃ catalyst system, the use of TS as a support was very effective to enhance catalytic activity compared with TiO₂ or SiO₂ alone. The addition of a slight amount of Pd and Ir to V₂O₅-WO₃/TS catalyst caused also remarkable enhancement of the catalytic activity without decreasing the selectivity to N₂. The present catalysts provide remarkably high catalytic performance for SCO of ammonia to N₂ under the practical reaction conditions for an industrial application.     

New chemosensor for larger guests based on modified cyclodextrin bearing seven hydrophobic chains each with a hydrophilic end group

A new chemosensor for larger guests was prepared. The new chemosensor bears hydrophobic units at the primary hydroxy side and a dansyl unit at the secondary hydroxy side of β-cyclodextrin. Due to the hydrophobic units, the new chemosensor is sensitive to large or slender guests such as SDS and insensitive to 1-adamantanol, which is a good guest for the natural β-CD.     

Substituent effects on the tautomer ratios between the hydrazone imine and diazenyl enamine forms in side-chained quinoxalines

The 3-(arylhydrazono)methyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinoxalines 9–11 were synthesized by the reaction of the quinoxalines 6–8 with various p-substituted benzenediazonium salts. Compounds 9–11 showed the tautomeric equilibria between the hydrazone imine A and diazenyl enamine B forms in dimethyl sulfoxide media. The substituent effect on the tautomer ratios of A to B was studied by the nmr spectroscopy to clarify that the presence of the ester group R² on the hydrazone carbon and electron-donating p-substituent R¹ on the side chain benzene ring exhibited a tendency to increase the ratios of the tautomer A .     

Facile routes to natural acyclic polyenes syntheses of spilanthol and trail pheromone for termite

The synthetic procedures for spilanthol and trail-following pheromone for a southern subterranean termite were described. The syntheses heavily depend on the new diene synthesis using titanium reagent.     

Photocrosslinking of copolymers of vinyloxyethyl methacrylate–styrene initiated by sulfonium salts. I. Transient species formed on photolysis of sulfonium salt

Benzyl cation was detected by transient absorption spectroscopy with a spectroscopic multichannel analyzer on pulse excitation (fourth harmonic of Nd:YAG laser, 266 nm; 10 ns fwhm) of benzyl(4-hydroxyphenyl) methylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate(BSS) in 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC). The benzyl cation was long-lived (lifetime, 59 ms) at room temperature and quenched by a vinyl ether compound. The formation of the benzyl cation as active species on photolysis of BSS is in contrast to the formation of Brønsted acids in other sulfonium salts so far reported. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Oxidation with Fremy's salt—VIII : Peri-effect of a group located at the C5 position of 1-naphthol and related compounds

It has been shown by a series of experiments on 5-alkyl, 5-halo-, and other 5-substituted 1-naphthol derivatives that the product ratio of the ortho- and para-naphthoquinones formed on oxidation with Fremy's salt is controlled by the bulkiness of the C₅-substituent.
