Compatibilizing effect of polyarylate-polystyrene block copolymer in polyarylate/polystyrene blends

The compatibilizing effect of polyarylate-polystyrene (PAR-PS) block copolymer prepared from macroazo initiator was examined in polyarylate/polystyrene blends from the view-points of morphology, density, and thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties. PARPS block copolymer enhanced the mutual dissolution of the homopolymers. Reduced dispersed-domain size and increased density showed the efficiency of the block copolymer as a compatibilizing agent. Results from mechanical and rheological properties could also be explained by the compatibilizing effect of PAR-PS block copolymer in the blends. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

In this paper some nonclassical representations ofosp _q (1/2) algebra are presented and the completeness relation of q-deformed supercoherent states is proved.     

Reactivity of 4-halogeno 1-vinyl naphthalenes in cationic polymerization

Improved methods for the synthesis of 4-halogeno 1-vinylnaphthalenes are proposed. Reactivity ratios are determined for the following systems: 4-fluoro-1-vinyl naphthalene-styrene, 4-chloro-1-vinyl naphthalene-styrene, and 4-bromo-1-vinyl naphthalene-styrene. The determinations are performed at various specific temperatures and the relative activation parameters are obtained. It appears that the reactivity of 1-vinyl naphthalene is drastically decreased when substituted by a halogen. In the case of 1-vinyl naphthalene the selection is enthalpically controlled.     

Growth of carbon nanotubes with alkaline earth carbonate as support

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were grown by chemical vapor deposition by applying C(2)H(2) fluxed over Fe(1)(-x)Co(x) catalyst supported by alkaline earth carbonate. Detailed investigations of the chemical process occurring prior and during the growth allowed us a significant improvement of the nanotube production rate and quality. We observed a strong influence of the catalyst stoichiometry on the carbon deposition rate and the nanotube characteristics. We also found evidence for the active role of the support in the growth process, which is explained by the decomposition of the carbonate at the growth temperature. Using the optimized parameters obtained from our study performed in a fixed bed furnace, we could improve the production rate to about 500 g/day of purified MWCNTs in our large-scale rotary tube furnace.     

Different ocular dominance map formation influenced by orientation preference columns in visual cortices

In animal experiments, the observed orientation preference and ocular dominance columns in the visual cortex of the brain show various pattern types. Here, we show that the different visual map formations in various species are due to the crossover behavior in anisotropic systems composed of orientational and scalar components such as easy-plane Heisenberg models. We predict the transition boundary between different pattern types with the anisotropy as a main bifurcation parameter, which is consistent with experimental observations.     

Waveform preservation of the backscattered stimulated Brillouin scattering wave by using a prepulse injection

We have found that it is possible to preserve the temporal waveform of the reflected wave generated from stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) by using a prepulse technique. The waveform of the SBS wave usually shows a steep rising edge in the ordinary SBS process. It has been found that the waveform of the reflected wave depends on both the prepulse energy and the time delay between the main pulse and the prepulses. A prepulse energy of 5 mJ and a time delay of 5 ns have been measured to be the optimum values under the experimental conditions. This prepulse method is useful in developing a multistage system employing several SBS cells in series for high-power laser applications.
