Research Progress of Lithium Plating on Graphite Anode in Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Lithium plating on graphite anode is triggered by harsh conditions of fast charge and low temperature, which significantly accelerates SOH (state of health) degradation and may cause safety issues of lithium ion batteries (LIBs). This paper has reviewed recent research progress of lithium plating on graphite anode. Firstly, we summarize the forming mechanisms of Li plating with corresponding influence factors, the detecting methods and hazard of Li plating. Then, approaches to suppress Li plating are discussed, including anode surface modification, electrolyte composition optimization and development of optimal charge strategies. Finally, we conclude and propose the remaining challenges and prospects in terms of mechanism research, detecting approaches, and suppressing methods of Li plating. This review highlights the development of Li plating research and plays a guiding rule of further study on Li plating in LIBs.     

Chaos in a seasonally and periodically forced phytoplankton–zooplankton system

The effect of seasonality and periodicity on plankton dynamics is investigated. Periodic variations are added to two different parameters of the plankton ecosystem: the growth rate of phytoplankton and the death rate of the zooplankton. The dynamic behaviors of the system is simulated numerically. A variety of complex population dynamics including chaos, quasi-periodicity, and periodic resonance are obtained. Our result reinforces the conjecture that seasonality and periodicity are crucial to plankton dynamics.     

Sulfur speciation in two typical soil samples using X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy and chemical fractionation

Sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy and chemical sequential extraction was respectively used to study the speciation of sulfur in two sulfur-rich soils samples. Sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy analysis obtained a variety of spectra. Spectral fitting of the X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra utilizing a large set of model compounds showed great differences between these two sulfur-rich soil samples. It was found that both of the soil samples had high sulfur content (8.40 and 11.57?g?kg^?1, respectively). Chemical extraction results suggested that sulfur mainly existed as organic in the ancient paddy soil (7.37?g?kg^?1) and more reduced sulfur was identified in it. X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy also got similar results. These organic forms of sulfur existed in organic matter across a range of oxidation states. There was high proportion of oxidized sulfur in the sulfuric acid plant that mainly existed as sulfate.     

Synthesis of mikto‐topology star polymer containing one cyclic arm

Well‐defined mikto‐topology star polystyrene composed of one cyclic arm and four linear arms was synthesized by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and Cu‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) click reaction. First, the bromine‐alkyne α,ω‐linear polystyrenes containing four hydroxyl groups protected with acetone‐based ketal groups were synthesized by ATRP of styrene using a designed initiator. Then, the bromine end‐group was converted to the azide and the linear polystyrene was cyclized intra‐molecularly by the CuAAC reaction. The four hydroxyl groups were released by deprotection and then esterified with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to produce a cyclic polymer bearing four ATRP initiating units. By subsequent ATRP of styrene to grow linear polymers with the cyclic polystyrene as a macroinitiator, the mikto‐topology star polymers were prepared. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Influence of NH<Subscript>3</Subscript> flow rate on pyridine-like N content and NO electrocatalytic oxidation of N-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (N-MWCNTs) have been prepared by pyrolysis of pyridine and iron phthalocyanine over an iron catalyst at 850 °C at various ammonia gas (NH₃) flow rates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal that the pyridine-like nitrogen (N) content can be controlled by changing the flow rate of NH₃, and that pyridine-like N plays an important role: it can increase the electrocatalytic activity and the rate of nitric oxide (NO) electrooxidation and decrease the activation energy of NO electrooxidation. Cyclic voltammetry results demonstrate that the N-MWCNTs sample grown with 200 mL/min NH₃ flow has the maximum N content of 3.22 atomic %, and its content of pyridine-like N that is chemically active is also the highest among all the N-MWCNTs samples. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicate that two-step electron transfer process occurs at the N-MWCNT-modified electrode, and the control step is different in various potential regions. The stability of NO electrooxidation at the N-MWCNT-modified electrode is examined, and the reaction mechanism is discussed.     

Bursting synchronization of Hind–Rose system based on a single controller

Bursting synchronization of Hind–Rose system is investigated. Two schemes with only a single controller are proposed to synchronize Hind–Rose chaotic system via the back-stepping method. Especially in the second scheme, only one state variable is contained in the controller. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, the sufficient conditions for synchronization are obtained analytically in both cases. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to show the effectiveness of the developed methods.     

Design,synthesis and in vivo anti-hyperglycemic activity of gem-dimethyl-bearing C-glucosides as SGLT2 inhibitors

A series of gem-dimethyl-bearing C-glucosides were designed and synthesized as SGLT2 inhibitors,with anhydrous aluminum chloride-mediated Friedel-Crafts alkylation to construct the gem-dimethyl functionality being the key step.The in vivo anti-hyperglycemic activity was evaluated with mice oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT),and all the synthesized compounds showed significant but less potent anti-hyperglycemic activity than the positive control dapagliflozin.     

Morphology Development in Multi‐Component Polymer Blends: I Composition Effect on Phase Morphology in PP/PET Polymer Blends

The relationship of the phase morphology of polypropylene/polyethylene‐terephthalate (PP/PET) blends and their corresponding compatibilized blends with composition was investigated using digital image analysis. A diameter, d _g , was defined and calculated to discuss the phase morphology of this polymer blend system. A figure‐estimation method was introduced to determine the width of the distribution of d _g . Based on the method, it is proven that the distribution of d _g obeys a log‐normal distribution and consequently, the distribution width, σ was calculated. Further, a fractal dimension, D _f , was introduced to describe the distribution of main sizes of the particles of the dispersed phase. The results showed that, while d _g increased with the concentration of the dispersed phase, σ and D _f show different dependence relations on composition;σ increases monotonously but D _f shows a maximum at a PET content of 30%, indicating that, even though the whole size distribution is much broader, the distribution of the main body of size becomes more uniform when the content of PET is less than 30%.
