Subspaces ofL p (G) spanned by characters: 0<p<1

LetG be an infinite compact abelian group,μ a Borel measure onG with spectrumE, and 0<p<1. We show that ifμ is not absolutely continuous with respect to Haar measure, thenL _E ^P (G), the closure inL ^p (G) of theE-trigonometric polynomials, does not have enough continuous linear functionals to separate points. Ifμ is actually singular, thenL _E ^p (G) does not have any nontrivial continuous linear functionals at all. Our methods recover the classical F. and M. Riesz theorem, and a related several variable result of Bochner; they reveal the existence of small sets of characters that spanL ^P (T), where T is the unit circle; and they show that theH ^p spaces of the “big disc algebra” have one-dimensional dual.     

Cross sections and charged multiplicity distributions for π−p and K−p interactions at 147 GeV/c

The results presented in this paper were obtained from a 105 000 frame exposure of the FNAL Hybrid Proportional Wire Chamber-30 inch Bubble Chamber System, in a tagged beam of 147 GeV/c negative particles. Elastic, total and topological cross sections were obtained for both π^?p and K^?p interactions. Comparisons with other data, taken with various beam particles over large momentum intervals, show good agreement with KNO scaling, and similarity in the scaling behavior of σ_n for the different beam particles.     

A new approach to the synthesis of cilastatin,an inhibitor of renal dipeptidase

A convenient preparative synthesis of cilastatin, an inhibitor of renal dipeptidase used in drugs with the antibiotic imipenem, has been elaborated. The key intermediate in this synthesis is 2-amino-7-chloroheptanoic acid prepared by oxidative cleavage of cycloheptanone followed by bromination of 7-chloroheptanoyl chloride with subsequent amination of the 2-bromo-7-chloroheptanoic acid thus formed. All of the stages of the new synthesis are easily performed, as is the isolation of the intermediate products, and they do not require any organometallic reagents.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. The electromagnetic force for “vortical” optics and traps of particles

Particles in resonance electromagnetic fields experience a sharp increase of the recoil forces. The quasi-elastic and cooling action of the recoil has found application in traps and optics of particles. This paper aims at drawing attention to the vortical recoil action; it can dominate and has peculiar features deserving interest for the application.On leave from: L.V. New reaction of benzocrown derivatives of 5-amino-4-imidazolecarboxamides leading to condensed tetracyclic systems

A new cyclization reaction has been described for 5-amino-4-imidazolecarboxamides containing a benzocrown ether fragment at N₍₁₎ by the action of nitrous acid, which proceeds at the amino group of the imidazole ring and benzene ring of the macroheterocyclic fragment instead of the expected closure of the triazine ring to give a 2-azapurine analog, namely, 1-R-imidazo[4,5-d]triazin-4-one, where R is the benzo-12-crown-4 or benzo-15-crown-5 residue.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 10, pp. 1349–1352, October, 1993.
