Low energy tail of the exciton luminescence band in 2H-PbI2 and its relation to Urbach rule

We have measured luminescence spectra of 2H-PbI₂ at different temperatures between 77 and 180 K. The lower energy tail of the luminescence band due to free exciton annihilation decreases exponentially with decreasing the photon energy over an order of magnitude, which corresponds to the Urbach tail in the absorption spectrum. This fact suggests that the exciton state corresponding to the exponential tail is in the thermal equilibrium and the steepness coefficient δ₀ = 1.67 in Urbach rule is obtained also from the luminescence spectra.     

Titanocene(II)-promoted carbonyl allenation utilizing 1,1-dichloroalk-1-enes

Treatment of 1,1-dichloroalk-1-enes with Cp2Ti[P(OEt)3]2 produced organotitanium species, which afford allenes on treatment with aldehydes and ketones.     

Specific heat study of an S = 1/2 alternating Heisenberg chain system: F5PNN in a magnetic field

We have measured the specific heat of an S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain pentafulorophenyl nitronyl nitroxide in magnetic fields up to H > H(C2). This compound has a field-induced magnetic ordered (FIMO) phase between H(C1) and H(C2). Characteristic behaviors are observed depending on the magnetic field up to above H(C2) outside of the H-T boundary for the FIMO. The temperature and field dependence of the specific heat are qualitatively in good agreement with the theoretical calculation on an S = 1/2 two-leg ladder [Wang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5399 (2000)]]. This agreement suggests that the observed behaviors are related with the low-energy excitation in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid.     

Common-path achromatic interferometer-coronagraph: nulling of polychromatic light

A three-dimensional common-path interferometer is proposed, which can achromatically null out an on-axis source while it maintains the detectability of an off-axis source. A geometric phase in the three-dimensional interferometer introduces an achromatic pi-phase shift to the light from the on-axis source, such that destructive interference nulls out the axial light at one of the ports of the interferometer. Light from the off-axis source, which is exempt from the pi-phase shift, comes out from both ports with equal intensity. The common-path scheme makes the system highly immune to environmental disturbances.     

Design Consideration for a Two-Distributed-Junction Tuning Circuit

We describe a novel method of designing a tuning circuit with two half-wave distributed junctions separated by a half-wavelength microstripline, which analytically determines the circuit parameters such as the minimum current density of the junctions and the characteristic impedances of the distributed junctions and the microstripline. The tuning circuit was approximated by simple transmission theory and then simplified with ideal circuit components for analysis. We applied Chebyshevs band-pass filter theory, in part, to optimize the circuit design. The analytical results revealed that a high characteristic-impedance ratio between the distributed junctions and the microstripline is necessary to obtain broadband matching using low-current-density junctions. The experimental results for all-NbN SIS mixers we designed with this method demonstrated double-sideband (DSB) receiver-noise temperatures of 6–10 quanta from 710 to 810 GHz for a mixer with a current density of only 4 kA/cm² (estimated C_JR_N product of 37 at 750 GHz). The RF bandwidth was broader than that of a conventional full-wave distributed SIS mixer with the same current density.     

Highly effective synthetic methods for substituted 2-arylbenzofurans using [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement: short syntheses of stemofuran a and eupomatenoid 6

A new and efficient synthesis of 2-arylbenzofurans has been achieved via a route involving acylation and subsequent [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of oxime ethers. Its synthetic utility is demonstrated by a short synthesis of stemofuran A and eupomatenoid 6 in which no procedure for protection of the phenolic hydroxyl groups is needed. Canceling branch points and cusps on projections of knotted surfaces in -space

For a knotted surface in -space, its generic projection into -space has branch points as its singularities, and its successive projection into -space has fold points and cusps as its singularities. In this paper, we show that for non-orientable knotted surfaces, the numbers of branch points and cusps can be minimized by isotopy.

     

Discovery of temperature-dependent phenomena of muon-catalyzed fusion in solid deuterium and tritium mixtures

A systematic experimental study on muon-catalyzed fusion was conducted using a series of solid deuterium and tritium mixtures. A variety of conditions were investigated, i.e., tritium concentrations from 20% to 70%, and temperatures from 5 to 16 K. With decreasing temperature, we observed an unexpected decrease in the muon cycling rate (lambda(c)) and an increase in the muon loss probability (W). The origins of these observed changes were interpreted by the temperature-dependence in the dt mu formation process for lambda(c) and that in the muon reactivation process after muon-to-alpha sticking for W.
