Call Admission: A New Approach to Quality of Service

Quality of service guarantees are an important and much discussed aspect of ATM network design. However, there is no standard definition of quality of service. Moreover, some often-used criteria seem quite crude. We consider call admission to a bufferless ATM multiplexer with on/off sources. A new criterion for a guarantee on average cell loss is proposed. This criterion represents the quality of service from the point of view of the user, and is thus more reliable. We calculate the optimal policy that minimizes blocking subject to the guarantee, when there is only one type of user.The measure of cell-loss we propose is applicable to a wide range of models. It gives rise to a mathematical programming formulation, which we derive explicitly for our case.     

Measurements of the hyperfine magnetic fields at Ta and Fe in the Laves compounds (Zrx Hf1−x)Fe2 for 0≤x≤1

The hyperfine magnetic fields at¹⁸¹Ta and⁵⁷Fe in the ferromagnetic Laves intermetallic compounds (Zr_xHf_1?x)Fe₂ (0≤x≤1) have been measured by the methods of TDPAC and Mössbauer effect, respectively, and shown to be practically independent of x at x≥0.4. An average value B_hf (Ta)=?6.52 T at 300 K was obtained for samples with x≥0.4, and ?14.2 T for pure HfFe₂ in the hexagonal C14 modification. For 0hf(Ta) in (Zr_0.9 Hf_0.1)Fe₂ from that for B_hf (Fe) and the bulk magnetization was confirmed, studied in detail, and shown to exist for all x≥0.4. The temperature dependence of B_hf(Ta) in HfFe₂ was close to that of B_hf (Fe).

Unsteady flows in a fluid in pipes made of viscoelastic active material

Results are given of the numerical solution of the equations which describe in the quasione-dimensional approximation the motion of a fluid in a pipe made of a viscoelastic material with a nonmonotonic S-shaped static characteristic curve. Some possible ways are considered for obtaining simpler models with lumped parameters for such flows. There is a discussion of the application of the theory to the problem of the tone of blood vessels.     

Abilities of nonlinear acoustic methods in locating gas bubbles in biological tissues

On the basis of a numerical solution to the equation of radial oscillations of a gas bubble in a liquid, the abilities of nonlinear acoustic methods in detecting gas bubbles in biological tissues with the use of pulsed acoustic location are analyzed. It is demonstrated that, with moderate amplitudes of the probing signal, it is possible to detect bubbles whose size is close to resonance. An improved version of the method of paired pulses is proposed, along with a method for detecting the bubbles and measuring their dimensions on the basis of a nonlinear excitation of their natural oscillations.     

Mössbauer spectroscopic study of half-Heusler compounds

The family of half-Heusler compounds offers a variety of half-metallic ferromagnetic materials. We have applied the Mössbauer spectroscopy to study the atomic order, local surroundings and hyperfine fields to several half-Heusler compounds. ¹²¹Sb Mössbauer study of the compound CoMnSb revealed the presence of two nonequivalent antimony positions in the elementary cell and enabled to identify the structure. ^119mSn, ¹⁵⁵Gd and ¹⁹⁷Au Mössbauer spectroscopic studies were used to characterize the properties of ferromagnetic granular material based on the half-Heusler ferromagnet MnAuSn in the antiferromagnetic GdAuSn matrix.     

Intrinsic equations for a generalized relaxed elastic line on an oriented surface in the galilean space

In this article, we derive the intrinsic equations for a generalized relaxed elastic line on an oriented surface in the Galilean 3-dimensional space G₃. These equations will give direct and more geometric approach to questions concerning about generalized relaxed elastic lines on an oriented surface in G₃.
