A class of universal relations for isotropic elastic materials is described by the tensor equationTB = BT. This simple rule yields at most three component relations which are the generators of many known universal relations for isotropic elasticity theory, including the well-known universal rule for a simple shear. Universal relations for four families of nonhomogeneous deformations known to be controllable in every incompressible, homogeneous and isotropic elastic material are exhibited. These same universal relations may hold for special compressible materials. New universal relations for a homogeneous controllable shear, a nonhomogeneous shear, and a variable extension are derived. We have previously used Markov models to describe movements of patients between hospital states; these may be actual or virtual and described by a phase-type distribution. Here we extend this approach to a Markov reward model for a healthcare system with Poisson admissions and an absorbing state, typically death. The distribution of costs is evaluated for any time and expressions derived for the mean and variances of costs. The average cost at any time is then determined for two scenarios: the Therapeutic and Prosthetic models, respectively. This example is used to illustrate the idea that keeping acute patients longer in hospital to ensure fitness for discharge, may reduce costs by decreasing the number of patients that become long-stay. In addition we develop a Markov Reward Model for a healthcare system including states, where the patient is in hospital, and states, where the patient is in the community. In each case, the length of stay is described by a phase-type distribution, thus enabling the representation of durations and costs in each phase within a Markov framework. The model can be used to determine costs for the entire system thus facilitating a systems approach to the planning of healthcare and a holistic approach to costing. The solution for the finite amplitude, uniaxial motion of a Mooney-Rivlin oscillator on suspension, compression, or horizontal supports, and for arbitrary initial data is presented. The problem is unusual. Depending upon the initial data, the type of support, the amount of static stretch, and the value of a Mooney-Rivlin parameter, the solution may have one of three distinct possible periodic forms. The three cases are solved exactly, and simple bounds on the period of the finite motion are given. Some special situations are illustrated, both analytically and graphically. The effect of the amount of static stretch on the period of superimposed small amplitude oscillations also is described. The nearly constant pitch of the sound radiated by a sufficiently stretched rubber cord, a phenomenon observed independently by two experimenters at the turn of the century, is explained analytically for three ideal rubberlike material models. Transverse vibrational frequency data for three kinds of rubber strings, obtained with the aid of a novel laser apparatus, are compared with the analytical results. A numerical scheme is introduced to compute from the experimental data the apparent average number of links in a molecular chain of a rubberlike material from both simple tension and transverse frequency measurements. It is shown that the nearly flat frequency response is a molecular network finite extensibility effect that is controlled by the apparent number of links in a chain of the molecular network structure. 相似文献

The finite amplitude, free vibrational characteristics of a simple mechanical system consisting of an axisymmetric rigid body supported by a highly elastic tubular shear spring subjected to axial, rotational, and coupled shearing motions are studied. Two classes of elastic tube materials are considered: a compressible material whose shear response is constant, and an incompressible material whose shear response is a quadratic function of the total amount of shear. The class of materials with constant shear response includes the incompressible Mooney-Rivlin material and certain compressible Blatz-Ko, Hadamard, and other general kinds of models. For each material class, the quasi-static elasticity problem is solved to determine the telescopic and gyratory shearing deformation functions needed to evaluate the elastic tube restoring force and torque exerted on the body. For all materials with constant shear response, the differential equations of motion are uncoupled equations typical of simple harmonic oscillators. Hence, exact solutions for the forced vibration of the system can be readily obtained; and for this class, engineering design formulae for the load-deflection relations are discussed and compared with experimental results of others'. For the quadratic material, however, the general motion of the body is characterized by a formidable, coupled system of nonlinear equations. The free, coupled shearing motion for which either the axial or the azimuthal shear deformation may be small is governed by a pair of equations of the Duffing and Hill types. On the other hand, the finite amplitude, pure axial and pure rotational motions of the load are described by the classical, nonlinear Duffing equation alone. The infinitesimal stability of the equilibrium states of an arbitrary incompressible, isotropic and homogeneous elastic cylindrical shell in a pure radial expansion under a constant inflation pressure is studied for both thick- and thin-walled shells. The classical criterion of infinitesimal stability yields a general stability theorem relating the frequency and pressure response and reveals that points at which the pressure is stationary define the domain of unstable or neutrally stable states. All results are expressed in terms of a general shear response function, and specific results are provided for the Mooney-Rivlin, Gent and Ogden models, the second having limited extensibility, the last including experimental data. Every static state of a Mooney-Rivlin tube is stable so long as the pressure is less than an asymptotic limit that increases with the thickness. Otherwise, only the Ogden model exhibits static states of instability for all long cylindrical tubes of thickness less than a transitional value above which all static states are infinitesimally stable. A long cylindrical cavity in all three unbounded models is stable for all pressures. All results are illustrated graphically. 相似文献
