Experimental single-molecule stretching curves for three backbone architectures (single-stranded DNA, various types of peptides, polyvinylamine) are quantitatively compared with corresponding quantum-chemical (zero-temperature) ab-initio calculations in the high-force range of up to two nanonewtons. For high forces, quantitative agreement is obtained with the contour length of the polymers as the only fitting parameter. For smaller forces, the effects of chain fluctuations are accounted for by using recent theoretical results for the stretching response of a freely-rotating-chain model.  相似文献

The dynamics of excitons in individual semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes was studied using time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The PL decay from tubes of the same (n,m) type was found to be monoexponential, however, with lifetimes varying between less than 20 and 200 ps from tube to tube. Competition of nonradiative decay of excitons is facilitated by a thermally activated process, most likely a transition to a low-lying optically inactive trap state that is promoted by a low-frequency phonon mode.  相似文献

The major challenge of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) microscopy at a spatial resolution of a few micrometers is to obtain a sufficiently high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) within a reasonable measurement time. As a particular difficulty, molecular self-diffusion poses a serious limitation to true spatial resolution and SNR if conventional Fourier encoding techniques are used. Opposed to that, the alternative DESIRE (Diffusion Enhancement of SIgnal and REsolution) approach to NMR microscopy utilises diffusion to increase the SNR. Being a real-space imaging method, spatial localisation is accomplished by saturation pulses while diffusion continuously replaces the saturated by unsaturated spins. For this technique a signal enhancement of up to three orders of magnitude has been predicted and initial experimental data have provided a proof of principle. In the present work, a detailed investigation of one-dimensional (1D) DESIRE is presented including simulations of a real implementation of the method, a quantitative experimental analysis, and basic 1D imaging. The simulations reveal the importance and provide the means of ensuring the true spatial resolution for this particular way of localisation, enable the selection of useful experimental parameters, and predict the specific image contrast to be expected around barriers restricting diffusion. Experimental data are presented with resolutions down to 3 microm and DESIRE enhancement up to 25 that are in good agreement with the simulation results. In particular, 1D DESIRE imaging in a phantom confirms the expected signal drop close to barriers due to spatially restricted diffusion.  相似文献

We investigate the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons on silver tubes with finite-difference time-domain simulations. These surface plasmon polaritons exhibit azimuthal whispering gallery modes with quality factors in the hundreds. We show that the high quality factors arise from the coupling of the surface plasmon modes to photonic modes inside the tube. We examine the influence of a gain material on the quality factors and find that for material data of rhodamine 6G, the quality factors are enhanced significantly up to values of 3000.  相似文献

We propose coupled evolution equations for the thickness of a liquid film and the density of an adsorbate layer on a partially wetting solid substrate. Therein, running droplets are studied assuming a chemical reaction underneath the droplets that induces a wettability gradient on the substrate and provides the driving force for droplet motion. Two different regimes for moving droplets--reaction-limited and saturated regime--are described. They correspond to increasing and decreasing velocities with increasing reaction rates and droplet sizes, respectively. The existence of the two regimes offers a natural explanation of prior experimental observations.  相似文献

Using a right-angled magnetic air prism, we have achieved a separation of ~10 arcsec between ~2 arcsec wide up and down-spin peaks of 5.4 Å neutrons. The polarised neutron option has thus been introduced into the SUSANS instrument. Strongly spindependent SUSANS spectra have been observed over ±1.3 × 10?4 Å?1 range for several magnetic alloy samples. Spatial pair-distribution functions for the up and down-spins as well as the nuclear and magnetic scattering length density distributions in the micrometer domain, have been deduced from these spectra.  相似文献

A linear spectral estimation technique, the PDFT algorithm, is used as part of a nonlinear iterative reconstruction scheme to obtain improved radar images. The iterative PDFT algorithm is used to address the limited resolution problem inherent to imaging objects buried in soil and hidden under foliage. This is achieved by subsequent application of two properties of the PDFT algorithm: the energy parameter of the PDFT algorithm is used to determine the target shape, while the shape information in turn is used to obtain super-resolved images. We describe algorithms able to exploit both properties automatically and without manual intervention. Two methods are investigated in particular, one iteratively optimizing the constraints by monitoring the energy parameter, the other method computing energy values for all points, from which a weighted prior function is determined. In addition, we discuss variants of both algorithm which provide an optimized trade-off between computation time and performance. Additional attention is given to situations, where a known target is embedded in an unknown background. Imaging results are presented for both synthetic and measured data.  相似文献

Experimental and numerical investigations of the ignition of hydrogen/air mixtures by jets of hot exhaust gases are reported. An experimental realisation of such an ignition process, where a jet of hot exhaust gas impinges through a narrow nozzle into a quiescent hydrogen/air mixture, possibly initiating ignition and combustion, is studied. High-speed laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) image sequences of the hydroxyl radical (OH) and laser Schlieren methods are used to gain information about the spatial and temporal evolution of the ignition process. Recording temporally resolved pressure traces yields information about ambient conditions for the process. Numerical experiments are performed that allow linking these observables to certain characteristic states of the gas mixture. The outcome of numerical modelling and experiments indicates the important influence of the hot jet temperature and speed of mixing between the hot and cold gases on the ignition process. The results show the quenching of the flame inside the nozzle and the subsequent ignition of the mixture by the hot exhaust jet. These detailed examinations of the ignition process improve the knowledge concerning flame transmission out of electrical equipment of the type of protection flameproof enclosure.  相似文献
