High-resolution infrared spectra of NCCN and NCCN

High-resolution spectra of ¹⁵N¹²C¹²C¹⁵N and ¹⁴N¹³C¹³C¹⁴N have been measured and analyzed from 200 to 3600 cm⁻¹. All the vibrational levels below 900 cm⁻¹ have been observed and characterized. The Fermi resonance between ν₂ and 2ν₄ has been studied and the resonance constant has been determined for several cases. Several Σ⁻ states have been directly observed for the first time for each isotopomer, the (0001111)0f, (0011111)0f, and (0002222)0f states. The pattern of the energy levels for clusters of l-type resonance coupled levels, such as 0001131,3, has been determined for cyanogen for the first time. Among other things this involved the determination of the vibrational l-type resonance constant, r₄₅. Many of the power series constants, α_i and x_ij, and higher order constants have been determined.

Summary Diels-Alder reactions of 2- and 3-vinylindoles with aryne, 1,4-benzo- and 1,4-naphtho-quinone lead to new six-ring annellated carbazoles. Molecular modeling studies predict that the compounds with coplanar framework are able to intercalate with the B-DNA.

     

Reflection spectroscopy in microstructured light scattering materials

Summary A theoretical model is derived that describes the influence of lateral light diffusion in a scattering medium on the absorptivity of an absorber spot on top of the substrate. The model uses the lateral resolved reflectivity under point irradiation that has been analyzed experimentally with a scanning-micro-laser-reflectometer. The model allows quantification of the absorptivity by one single equation that contains only the mean radial diffusion length of light and the spot area. Experiment and theory are applied to typical substrates for thin layer chromatography (alumina, silica, cellulose). The diffusion lengths in these substrates are given and the absorptivities of the spots are calculated as a function of the spot area.     

Superstable semigroups of operators

In [NR] the authors introduced the notion of superstable operators on a Banach space E using ultrapowers E_u of E. In [HR] this notion was extended to strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups again by means of ultrapowers.It is the aim of the present paper to give an equivalent intrinsic definition of superstability (without the reference to ultrapowers). This definition allows us to improve the results of [NR] as well as of [HR]. We apply our results to semigroups of positive linear operators on Banach lattices and C^*-algebras, respectively.     

Fast algorithms for discrete Chebyshev-Vandermonde transforms and applications

Applying orthogonal polynomials, the discrete Chebyshev-Vandermonde transform (DCVT) is introduced as a special almost orthogonal transform. An important example of DCVT is the discrete cosine transform (DCT). Using the divide-and-conquer technique and the d'Alembert functional equation, fast DCT-algorithms are described. By the help of these results we present for the first time fast, numerically stable algorithms for simultaneous polynomial approximation and for collocation method for the airfoil equation, a special Cauchytype singular integral equation.     

Continuity and Fréchet-differentiability of Nemytskij operators in Hölder spaces

The paper is devoted to superposition operators acting between Hölder spaces, for which we prove continuity properties and Fréchet-differentiability under assumptions being weaker than those so far known in the literature.     

Unique solvability of the periodic Cauchy problem for wave-hierarchy problems with dissipation

Wave-hierarchy problems appear in a variety of applications such as traffic flows, roll waves down an open inclined channel and multiphase flows. Usually, these are described by the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with specific non-linearities; in a fluidized bed model they contain an additional pressure gradient term and are supplemented by an elliptic equation for this unknown pressure. These equations admit solutions periodic in space as well as in time, i.e. periodic travelling waves. Therefore, the corresponding initial value problem with periodic boundary conditions is solved locally in time in appropriate Sobolev spaces. Some remarks are made concerning global solutions, the occurrence of clusters or voids and the bifurcation of time periodic solutions, respectively.
