Use of 1,3-dibenzyl-dihydrouracil in the chain extension of 2,3-O-isopropylidene-d-glyceraldehyde

The aldol-type addition of 1,3-dibenzyl-dihydrouracil 2 to 2,3-O-isopropylidene-d-glyceraldehyde 3 was examined in different solvents and under Lewis acid catalysis in order to establish the stereochemical preferences. A stereodivergent synthesis of 5-trihydroxypropyl-dihydrouracil derivatives 4 and its C-5 epimer 5 was realized. The synthesis of ureido polyols 8 and 10 was obtained via the reductive ring opening of the templates 4 and 5.     

Matrix removal for the ion chromatographic determination of some trace elements in milk

An ion chromatographic method has been developed for the determination of some microelements in different types of milk. It involves oxidative photodegradation of the organic matrix with H₂O₂ in a UV digester, equipped with a high-pressure mercury lamp. The temperature of the sample is maintained at 85±5 °C by a combined air/water cooling system. This procedure provides an efficient alternative to traditional dry ashing and wet digestion methods. Milk degrades in less than 2 h, while inorganic constituents, except for iodide, nitrate, nitrite, sulfite and manganese (II), are unaffected by UV radiation. Depending upon the type of milk (whole, skimmed, powdered, evaporated, etc.) to be analysed, the amount of sample and the UV photolysis time can be adjusted as per requirements. The clear solution resulting from the UV digestion is diluted, filtered and injected onto an ion chromatograph equipped with both conductivity and variable-wavelength UV-Vis detectors. The method has been tested with standards and real milk samples and has been found to be satisfactory for the determination of total chloride, bromide, phosphorus (as phosphate) and sulfur (as sulfate), and of copper, nickel, zinc, cobalt, iron and lead.     

TBAF-catalyzed synthesis of 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles under solventless conditions

Tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) is an efficient catalyst in the [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of organic nitriles 1 with trimethylsilyl azide (TMSN(3)) in solventless conditions. The corresponding 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles 2 were obtained under mild conditions and in 80-97% yields.     

Nitrite increases the enantioselectivity of sulfoxidation catalyzed by myoglobin derivatives in the presence of hydrogen peroxide

The effect of nitrite in the sulfoxidation of organic sulfides catalyzed by myoglobin (Mb) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide has been investigated. A general improvement in enantioselectivity was found for the reaction catalyzed by horse heart metMb and a series of sperm whale metMb derivatives including the wild type protein, the active site mutants T67K Mb, T67R Mb, T67R/S92D Mb, and the T67K Mb derivative reconstituted with the modified prosthetic group protohemin-l- histidine methyl ester.

A comparison between different techniques for the isolation of rosemary essential oil

Traditional hydrodistillation (HD), supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), organic solvent extraction (SE), and water microwave assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) techniques were compared and evaluated for their effectiveness in the isolation of rosemary essential oil. The microwave assisted hydrodistillation technique was optimized in terms of both delivered power and time duration. The extracts/distillates were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Microwave distillation, which exploits the physical action of microwaves on plants, showed a series of advantages over the other approaches: low cost, use of water in sample pre-treatment step, greatly reduced isolation time, and attainment of high quality essential oil distillate. Moreover, the absence of environmental impact of this innovative technique was also emphasized.

The retro 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition induced by electron impact on 3,5-diphenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole is interpreted as a two-step process on the basis of the energetics and kinetics of the fragments [C₇H₅NO]⁺., [C₆H₅CN]⁺. and [C₆H₅CO]⁺.

The reactions of the nucleophile trans-[RuCl(NO)(1)] (1 = 2,11-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)benzo[c]-phenanthrene) with carbon monoxide and the phosphite ligand (2) (2 = 1-ethyl-3,5,8-trioxa-4-phosphabicyclo (2.2.2)octane)

The preparation of the nucleophile trans-[RuCl(NO)( 1 )], where 1 is the bidentate ligand Ph₂PCH₂C₁₈CH₂PPh₂, and of the five-coordinate species [RuCl(CO)(NO)( 1 )], [RuCl(CO)(NO)(Ph₂PCH₂Ph)₂] and [RuCl(NO)( 2 )( 1 )] are reported. The crystal structure of [RuCl(CO)(NO)( 1 )] shows that the coordination around the metal atom is distorted trigonal bipyramidal with the phosphorus atoms in axial positions. The Ru? N? O bond angle is 142.8°. ¹H- and ³¹P-NMR. and \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \tilde \nu $\end{document}_NO IR.-data for the above complexes are reported and related to the coordination geometry.     

Comparative study of the phenolic profile,antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of leaf extracts of five Juniperus L. (Cupressaceae) taxa growing in Turkey

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparative evaluation of some biological properties of methanol and water extracts of leaves of five Juniperus taxa growing in Turkey: J. communis L. var. communis (Jcc), J. communis L. var. saxatilis Pall. (Jcs), J. drupacea Labill. (Jd), J. oxycedrus L. subsp. oxycedrus (Joo), J. oxycedrus L. subsp. macrocarpa (Sibth. & Sm.) Ball. (Jom). The antioxidant properties were examined in vitro; both in the DPPH and in the reducing power tests, Joo methanol extract resulted the most active (IC₅₀?=?0.09?±?0.01mg/mL and ASE/mL?=?2.56?±?0.06). In the TBA assay, Jcs methanol extract exhibited the highest activity (IC₅₀?=?4.39?±?0.47?μg/mL). The extracts displayed bacteriostatic activity against Staphylococcus aureus, and Jd methanol extract resulted the most effective (MIC?=?19.53?μg/mL); no effect on the S. aureus biofilm formation was observed. The extracts resulted non-toxic in the Artemia salina lethality bioassay. Finally, the phenolic profile of the methanol extracts was characterized by HPLC-PDA/ESI-MS.     

The relative permittivity of 1,2-ethanediol+2-methoxyethanol+water ternary mixtures

The relative permittivities for the ternary 1,2-ethanediol (component 1) + 2-methoxyethanol (2) + water (3) solvent system have been measured for 66 mixtures covering the whole mole fraction composition 0X₁/X₂/X₃ 1 range at –10, –5 and 0 °C. The experimental data were used to test some empirical relations stating the dependence of = (X₁, X₂, X₃). A comparison between the calculated and experimental data show that these equations can be usefully employed to predict values in correspondence of the experimental data gaps.
