Application of stable isotopes and hydrochemical analysis in groundwater aquifers of Argolis Peninsula (Greece)

The present study examines the isotopic and hydrochemical composition of 18 inland spring waters and 3 coastal karstic spring waters, covering the period between October 2005 and March 2008. The stable isotopes ((18)O, (2)H) processing has revealed the absence of significant evaporation phenomena and that the origin of fresh water samples is meteoric. Using (18)O values in rainfall waters, an average line of isotopic depletion with altitude has been constructed, extracting a rate of-0.45‰/100?m as typical for the study area. Furthermore, the mean altitude of recharge of the springs has been estimated by plotting the groundwater sampling points on a δ(18)O versus altitude diagram. Hydrochemistry results have shown that the dissolution of carbonate, flysch and ophiolitic formations defines the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater. Moreover, seawater intrusion in the coastal area is significantly high, causing the water in the three karstic springs to be brackish.     

2-blocks with abelian defect groups

We give a classification, up to Morita equivalence, of 2-blocks of quasi-simple groups with abelian defect groups. As a consequence, we show that Donovan?s conjecture holds for elementary abelian 2-groups, and that the entries of the Cartan matrices are bounded in terms of the defect for arbitrary abelian 2-groups. We also show that a block with defect groups of the form _C2m×_C2m$C_{2^m}\times C_{2^m}$ for m?2$m?2$ has one of two Morita equivalence types and hence is Morita equivalent to the Brauer correspondent block of the normaliser of a defect group. This completes the analysis of the Morita equivalence types of 2-blocks with abelian defect groups of rank 2, from which we conclude that Donovan?s conjecture holds for such 2-groups. A further application is the completion of the determination of the number of irreducible characters in a block with abelian defect groups of order 16. The proof uses the classification of finite simple groups.

New routes to condensed polynuclear compounds—IX : Synthesis of 2,10-, 3,10- and 4,10-diazaphenanthrene

Synthesis of 2,10-, 3,10-, 4,10-diazaphenanthrene and some of their derivatives has been achieved through benzyne cyclisation of anils and reduced anils derived from o-chlorobenzaldehyde and the appropriate aminopyridines.     

First measurement of form factors of the decay Xi(0) --> Sigma(+)e(-)nu macro(e)

We present the first measurement of the form factor ratios g(1)/f(1) (direct axial vector to vector), g(2)/f(1) (second class current), and f(2)/f(1) (weak magnetism) for the decay Xi(0)-->Sigma(+)e(-)nu macro(e) using the KTeV (E799) beam line and detector at Fermilab. From the Sigma(+) polarization measured with the decay Sigma(+)-->p pi(0) and the e(-)-nu; correlation, we measure g(1)/f(1) to be 1.32+/-(0.21)(0.17)(stat)+/-0.05(syst), assuming the SU(3)(f) (flavor) values for g(2)/f(1) and f(2)/f(1). Our results are all consistent with exact SU(3)(f) symmetry.     

Study of the K(0)(L) --> pi(+)pi(-)gamma Direct Emission Vertex

We have performed studies of the K(0)(L)-->pi(+)pi(-)gamma direct emission ( DE) and inner Bremsstrahlung ( IB) vertices, based on data collected by KTeV during the 1996 Fermilab fixed target run. We find a(1)/a(2) = -0.737+/-0.034 GeV2 for the DE form-factor parameter in the rho-propagator parametrization, and report on fits of the form factor to linear and quadratic functions as well. We concurrently measure gamma(K(0)(L)-->pi(+)pi(-)gamma,E(*)(gamma)>20 MeV)/gamma(K(0)(L)-->pi(+)pi(-)) = (20.8+/-0.3)x10(-3), and a K(0)(L)-->pi(+)pi(-)gamma DE/(DE+IB) branching ratio of 0.683+/-0.011.     

Search for the decay KL --> pi(0)e+e-

We report on a search for the decay KL-->pi(0)e+e- carried out by the KTeV/E799 experiment at Fermilab. This decay is expected to have a significant CP violating contribution and the measurement of its branching ratio could support the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism for CP violation or could point to new physics. Two events were observed in the 1997 data with an expected background of 1.06+/-0.41 events, and we set an upper limit B(KL-->pi(0)e+e-)<5.1 x 10(-10) at the 90% confidence level.     

Branching ratio measurement of the decay K(L) --> e(+)e(-)mu(+)mu(-)

We have collected a 43 event sample of the decay K(L)-->e(+)e(-)mu(+)mu(-) with negligible backgrounds and measured its branching ratio to be (2.62+/-0.40+/-0.17)x10(-9). We see no evidence for CP violation in this decay. In addition, we set the 90% confidence upper limit on the combined branching ratios for the lepton flavor violating decays K(L)-->e(+/-)e(+/-)mu(-/+)mu(-/+) at B(K(L)-->e(+/-)e(+/-)mu(-/+)mu(-/+))< or =1.23x10(-10), assuming a uniform phase space distribution.     

Migration entropy for the bound fluorine motion in alkaline earth fluorides

The alkaline earth fluorides doped with trivalent rare earths have shown a number of dielectric relaxations that are ascribed to the motion of bound interstitials. The entropies for the migration processes corresponding to R_I, R_IV relaxations in CaF₂ and to R_I, R_II relaxations in SrF₂ have been extra from the most recent experimental data. These are compared to the results from a method that has successfully calculated the formation entropy respectively, volume of defects and other properties involved in ionic conductivity and self-diffusion. The method leads to a ratio of the entropy to the enthalpy of the relaxation process ; it is in close agreement with the experimental values. Further the fact is explained why this ratio is a bulk property of the matrix material.
