Application of stable isotopes and hydrochemical analysis in groundwater aquifers of Argolis Peninsula (Greece)

The present study examines the isotopic and hydrochemical composition of 18 inland spring waters and 3 coastal karstic spring waters, covering the period between October 2005 and March 2008. The stable isotopes (¹⁸O, ²H) processing has revealed the absence of significant evaporation phenomena and that the origin of fresh water samples is meteoric. Using ¹⁸O values in rainfall waters, an average line of isotopic depletion with altitude has been constructed, extracting a rate of?0.45‰/100 m as typical for the study area. Furthermore, the mean altitude of recharge of the springs has been estimated by plotting the groundwater sampling points on a δ¹⁸O versus altitude diagram. Hydrochemistry results have shown that the dissolution of carbonate, flysch and ophiolitic formations defines the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater. Moreover, seawater intrusion in the coastal area is significantly high, causing the water in the three karstic springs to be brackish.     

New routes to condensed polynuclear compounds—VII : Synthesis of phenanthridines through a novel cyclisation reaction of haloanils

A convenient phenanthridine synthesis based on reaction of haloanils with potassium amide in liquid ammonia has been developed. Experimental evidence supports the postulated mechanism implicating a benzyne intermediate in the cyclisation step and a prior addition of amide ions across the azomethine linkage.     

Search for the KL-->pi 0 pi 0 e+e- decay in the KTeV experiment

The recent discovery of a large CP violating asymmetry in KL-->pi+pi-e+e- mode has prompted us to seach for the associated KL-->pi 0 pi 0 e+e- decay mode in the KTeV-E799 experiment at Fermilab. In 2.7 x 10(11) K(L) decays, one candidate event has been observed with an expected background of 0.3 event, resulting in an upper limit for the KL-->pi 0 pi 0 e+e- branching ratio of 6.6 x 10(-9) at the 90% C.L.     

Symmetric Groups, Wreath Products, Morita Equivalences, and Broue's Abelian Defect Group Conjecture

It is shown that for any prime p, and any non-negative integerw less than p, there exist p-blocks of symmetric groups of defectw, which are Morita equivalent to the principal p-block of thegroup S_p S_w. Combined with work of J. Rickard, this provesthat Broué's abelian defect group conjecture holds forp-blocks of symmetric groups of defect at most 5.     

A block theoretic analogue of a theorem of Glauberman and Thompson

If is an odd prime, a finite group and a Sylow--subgroup of , a theorem of Glauberman and Thompson states that is -nilpotent if and only if is -nilpotent, where is the Thompson subgroup of generated by all abelian subgroups of of maximal order. Following a suggestion of G. R. Robinson, we prove a block-theoretic analogue of this theorem.

     

Synthesis of (±)-3-dexosy-16-azaequilenin

Condensation of methacrylyl chloride with the amine obtained on lithium aluminium hydride reduction of 1,2-naphthocyclobuten-3-carboxamide gave a propenamide which on refluxing in $\text{O}$-dichlorobenzene cyclised to (±)-3-dexoy-16-azaequilenin.     

Search for the rare decay K(L)-->pi(0)e(+)e(-)

The KTeV/E799 experiment at Fermilab has searched for the rare kaon decay K(L)-->pi(0)e(+)e(-). This mode is expected to have a significant CP violating component. The measurement of its branching ratio could support the standard model or could indicate the existence of new physics. This Letter reports new results from the 1999-2000 data set. One event is observed with an expected background at 0.99+/-0.35 events. We set a limit on the branching ratio of 3.5x10(-10) at the 90% confidence level. Combining with the previous result based on the data set taken in 1997 yields the final KTeV result: BR(K(L)-->pi(0)e(+)e(-))<2.8x10(-10) at 90% C.L.     

Search for the decay K(L) --> pi(0)&mgr;(+)&mgr;(-)

We report on a search for the decay K(L)-->pi(0)&mgr;(+)&mgr;(-) carried out as a part of the KTeV experiment at Fermilab. This decay is expected to have a significant CP violating contribution and a direct measurement will either support the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism for CP violation or point to new physics. Two events were observed in the 1997 data with an expected background of 0.87+/-0.15 events, and we set an upper limit B(K(L)-->pi(0)&mgr;(+)&mgr;(-))<3. 8x10(-10) at the 90% confidence level.
