Dioxygen activation by a low-valent cobalt complex employing a flexible tripodal N-heterocyclic carbene ligand

The novel versatile cobalt(I) tris-carbene complex [(TIMEN(xyl))Co]Cl (1) (where TIMEN = (tris[2-(3-arylimidazol-2-ylidene)ethyl]amine) reacts with CO, one-electron oxidizers such as CH(2)Cl(2), and O(2) to yield the cobalt complexes [(TIMEN(xyl))Co(CO)]Cl (2), [(TIMEN(xyl))Co(Cl)]Cl (3), and peroxo species [(TIMEN(xyl))Co(O(2))](BPh(4)) (5). All new complexes were fully characterized by (1)H NMR, UV/vis, and IR spectroscopy as well as superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetization measurements and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The nucleophilic character of the eta(2)-bound dioxygen ligand in 5 was confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) studies and allows for oxygen-transfer reactions with electron-deficient organic substrates, such as benzoyl chloride.     

High pressure treatment of pharmaceutical drug delivery and related systems

Abstract

Solids like layer silicates (kaolinite and montmorillonite) as well as ZnO are in use in pharmacy. They are pressure treated and subsequently analyzed by means of ESR spectroscopy. The structural changes indicated by Fe³⁺ ions and paramagnetic defects are reponsible for the enhanced chemical activity of the pressurized systems.

Especially active Fe-O-species are formed which can react with intercacalated organic molecules. The most probable first step of such reactions will be a solid state single electron transfer. Spin probes and spin traps were used to prove this statements. The activation of the drug delivery systems by mechanical treatments is of importance for the stability of the drugs incorporated.

Purification of a 166mHo solution by successive high-performance liquid chromatography and gravitational chromatography for half-life determination

A methodology to purify a ^166mHo solution has been developed by a combination of activity and mass concentration measurements in order to further determine the ^166mHo half-life. The isobaric interference at m/q ? 166 requires Ho purification from non-natural Er with a high purification degree due to the large amount of Ho as opposed to Er. The Ho/Er separation was achieved using high-performance liquid chromatography on a semi-preparative column followed by purification on gravitational chromatography. The efficiency of the separation was evaluated after precise determination of the Er isotopic composition. The purification methodology enabled to separate Ho from Er.     

Tailoring a Dress to Single Protein Molecules: Proteins Can Do It Themselves through Localized Photo-Polymerization and Molecular Imprinting

Molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (MIP NPs) are antibody-like recognition materials prepared by a template-assisted synthesis. MIP NPs able to target biomolecules, like proteins, are under the spotlight for their great potential in medicine, but efficiently imprinting biological templates is still very challenging. Here we propose generating a molecular imprint in single NPs, by photochemically initiating the polymerization from individual protein templates. In this way, each protein molecule tailors itself its own “polymeric dress”. For this, the template protein is covalently coupled with a photoinitiator, Eosin Y. Irradiated with light at 533 nm, the Eosin moiety acts as an antenna and transfers energy to a co-initiator (an amine), which generates a radical and initiates polymerization. As a result, a polymer network is forming only around the very template molecule, producing cross-linked NPs of 50 nm, with single binding sites showing high affinity (K_D 10⁻⁹ m ) for their biological target, and selectivity over other proteins.

Abstract

The syntheses of phospholes (7, [3+2]-cycloaddition), bicyclophosphaalkenes (17, [4+2]-cycloaddition), and phosphabenzenes (15, [4+2]-cycloaddition followed by an extrusion process) starting from the phosphaalkynes (4) are described. The 2–Dewar phosphabenzene 18, obtained from the cyclobutadiene 21 and 4 (R =^tBu), is the starting material for the synthesis of the valency isomers 19, 20, 22, and 23.
