Finite-difference time domain (FDTD) numerical simulations coupled to real experimental data were used to investigate the propagation of 1 MHz pure bulk wave propagation through models of cortical bone microstructures. Bone microstructures were reconstructed from three-dimensional high resolution synchrotron radiation microcomputed tomography (SR-muCT) data sets. Because the bone matrix elastic properties were incompletely documented, several assumptions were made. Four built-in bone matrix models characterized by four different anisotropy ratios but the same Poisson's ratios were tested. Combining them with the reconstructed microstructures in the FDTD computations, effective stiffness coefficients were derived from simulated bulk-wave velocity measurements. For all the models, all the effective compression and shear bulk wave velocities were found to decrease when porosity increases. However, the trend was weaker in the axial direction compared to the transverse directions, contributing to the increase of the effective anisotropy. On the other hand, it was shown that the initial Poisson's ratio value may substantially affect the variations of the effective stiffness coefficients. The present study can be used to elaborate sophisticated macroscopic computational bone models incorporating realistic CT-based macroscopic bone structures and effective elastic properties derived from muCT-based FDTD simulations including the cortical porosity effect.  相似文献

The dynamic electronic structure of atoms and molecules can be directly observed by means of the (e, 2e) reaction, which measures the distribution of energies and momenta of two electrons in coincidence after a knockout reaction initiated by an electron beam of known momentum incident on a molecular gas target. The molecular state for each event is identified by the electron separation energy. The recoil momentum for each event is known from the difference of measured initial and final momenta. It has been verified that values of this momentum are equal under suitable conditions to the momentum of the electron in the target immediately before knockout. Thus the spherically-averaged electron momentum distribution for each molecular orbital is measured. This is directly related to molecular orbitals calculated by the methods of quantum chemistry. Properties obtained by this method for different types of molecules are discussed.  相似文献

Thirty-eight slices of pure trabecular bone 1-cm thickness were extracted from human proximal femurs. A pair of 1-MHz central frequency transducers was used to measure quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters in transmission [normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation (nBUA), speed of sound (SOS)] and in backscatter [broadband ultrasound backscatter (BUB)]. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured using clinical x-ray quantitative computed tomography. Site-matched identical region of interest (ROIs) of 7 x 7 mm2 were positioned on QUS and QCT images. This procedure resulted in 605 ROIs for all the specimens data pooled together. The short-term precision of the technique expressed in terms of CV was found to be 2.3% for nBUA, 0.3% for SOS and 4.5% for BUB. Significant linear correlation between QUS and BMD were found for all the 605 ROIs pooled, with r2 values of 0.73, 0.77, and 0.58 for nBUA, SOS, and BUB, respectively (all p < 0.05). For the BUB, the best regression was obtained with a polynomial fit of second order (r2 = 0.63). An analysis of measurements errors was developed. It showed that the residual variability of SOS is almost completely predicted by measurements errors, which is not the case for BUA and BUB, suggesting a role for micro-architecture in the determination of BUA and BUB.  相似文献

We review theoretical and experimental studies of the AC dielectric response of inhomogeneous materials, modelled as bond percolation networks, with a binary (conductor-dielectric) distribution of bond conductances. We first summarize the key results of percolation theory, concerning mostly geometrical and static (DC) transport properties, with emphasis on the scaling properties of the critical region around the percolation threshold. The frequency-dependent (AC) response of a general binary model is then studied by means of various approaches, including the effective-medium approximation, a scaling theory of the critical region, numerical computations using the transfer-matrix algorithm, and several exactly solvable deterministic fractal models. Transient regimes, related to singularities in the complex-frequency plane, are also investigated. Theoretical predictions are made more explicit in two specific cases, namely R-C and RL-C networks, and compared with a broad variety of experimental results, concerning, for example, granular composites, thin films, powders, microemulsions, cermets, porous ceramics and the viscoelastic properties of gels.  相似文献

Background

We have recorded responses from single neurons in murine visual cortex to determine the effectiveness of the input from the two murine cone photoreceptor mechanisms and whether there is any unique selectivity for cone inputs at this higher region of the visual system that would support the possibility of colour vision in mice. Each eye was stimulated by diffuse light, either 370 (strong stimulus for the ultra-violet (UV) cone opsin) or 505 nm (exclusively stimulating the middle wavelength sensitive (M) cone opsin), obtained from light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the presence of a strong adapting light that suppressed the responses of rods.

Results

Single cells responded to these diffuse stimuli in all areas of striate cortex. Two types of responsive cells were encountered. One type (135/323 – 42%) had little to no spontaneous activity and responded at either the on and/or the off phase of the light stimulus with a few impulses often of relatively large amplitude. A second type (166/323 – 51%) had spontaneous activity and responded tonically to light stimuli with impulses often of small amplitude. Most of the cells responded similarly to both spectral stimuli. A few (18/323 – 6%) responded strongly or exclusively to one or the other spectral stimulus and rarely in a spectrally opponent manner.

Conclusion

Most cells in murine striate cortex receive excitatory inputs from both UV- and M-cones. A small fraction shows either strong selectivity for one or the other cone mechanism and occasionally cone opponent responses. Cells that could underlie chromatic contrast detection are present but extremely rare in murine striate cortex.  相似文献

Non-linear resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (NRUS) is a technique exploiting the significant non-linear behavior of damaged materials, related to the presence of damage. This study shows for the first time the feasibility of this technique for damage assessment in bone. Two samples of bovine cortical bone were subjected to a progressive damage experiment. Damage accumulation was progressively induced in the samples by mechanical testing. For independent assessment of damage, X-ray CT imaging was performed at each damage step, but only helped in the detection of the prominent cracks. Synchrotron micro-CT imaging and histology using epifluorescence microscopy were performed in one of the two samples at the last damage step and allowed detection of micro-cracks for this step. As the quantity of damage accumulation increased, NRUS revealed a corresponding increase in the non-linear response. The measured change in non-linear response is much more sensitive than the change in elastic modulus. The results suggest that NRUS could be a potential tool for micro-damage assessment in bone. Further work has to be carried out for a better understanding of the physical nature of damaged bone, and for the ultimate goal of in vivo implementation of the technique where bone access will be a challenging problem.  相似文献

Finite-difference numerical simulation of ultrasound propagation in complex media such as cancellous bone represents a fertile alternative to analytical approaches because it can manage the complex 3D bone structure by coupling the numerical computation with 3D numerical models of bone microarchitecture obtained from high-resolution imaging modalities. The objective of this work was to assess in silico the sensitivity of ultrasound parameters to controlled changes of microarchitecture and variation of elastic constants. The simulation software uses a finite-difference approach based on the Virieux numerical scheme. An incident plane wave was propagated through a volume of bone of approximately 5 x 5 x 8 mm(3). The volumes were reconstructed from high-resolution micro-computed tomography data. An iterative numerical scenario of "virtual osteoporosis" was implemented using a dedicated image processing algorithm in order to modify the initial 3D microstructures. Numerical computations of wave propagation were performed at each step of the process. The sensitivity to bone material properties was also tested by changing the elastic constants of bone tissue. Our results suggest that ultrasonic variables (slope of the frequency-dependent attenuation coefficient and speed of sound) are mostly influenced by bone volume fraction. However, material properties and structure also appear to play a role. The impact of modifications of the stiffness coefficients remained lower than the variability caused by structural variations. This study emphasizes the potential of numerical computations tools coupled to realistic 3D structures to elucidate the physical mechanisms of interaction between ultrasound and bone structure and to assess the sensitivity of ultrasound variables to different bone properties.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to a method of extraction of guided waves phase velocities from experimental signals. Measurements are performed using an axial transmission device consisting of a linear arrangement of emitters and receivers placed on the surface of the inspected specimen. The technique takes benefit of using both multiple emitters and receivers and is validated on a reference wave guide. The guided mode phase velocities are obtained using a projection in the singular vectors basis. The singular vectors are determined by the singular values decomposition (SVD) of the response matrix between the two arrays in the frequency domain. This technique enables to recover accurately guided wave phase velocity dispersion curves. The SVD based approach was designed to overcome limitations of spatio-temporal Fourier transform for receiver array of limited spatial extent as in the case of clinical assessment of cortical bone in axial transmission.  相似文献

Velocity of ultrasound waves has proved to be a useful indicator of bone biomechanical competence. A detailed understanding of the dependence of ultrasound parameters such as velocity on bone characteristics is a key to the development of bone quantitative ultrasound (QUS). The objective of this study is to investigate the relative contributions of porosity and mineralized matrix properties to the bulk compressional wave velocity (BCV) along the long bone axis. Cross-sectional slabs from the diaphysis of four human femurs were included in the study. Seven regions of interest (ROIs) were selected in each slab. BCV was measured in through-transmission at 5 MHz. Impedance of the mineralized matrix (Zm) and porosity (Por) were obtained from 50 MHz scanning acoustic microscopy. Por and Zm had comparable effects on BCV along the bone axis (R = −0.57 and R = 0.72, respectively).  相似文献

We answer the following question: what is the minimum number of edges of a 2-connected graph with a given diameter? This problem stems from survivable telecommunication network design with grade-of-service constraints. In this paper, we prove tight bounds for 2-connected graphs and for 2-edge-connected graphs. The bound for 2-connected graphs was a conjecture of B. Bollobás (AMH 75–80) [3].  相似文献
