Towards antihydrogen confinement with the ALPHA antihydrogen trap

ALPHA is an international project that has recently begun experimentation at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility. The primary goal of ALPHA is stable trapping of cold antihydrogen atoms with the ultimate goal of precise spectroscopic comparisons with hydrogen. We discuss the status of the ALPHA project and the prospects for antihydrogen trapping.     

Antimatter plasmas in a multipole trap for antihydrogen

We have demonstrated storage of plasmas of the charged constituents of the antihydrogen atom, antiprotons and positrons, in a Penning trap surrounded by a minimum-B magnetic trap designed for holding neutral antiatoms. The neutral trap comprises a superconducting octupole and two superconducting, solenoidal mirror coils. We have measured the storage lifetimes of antiproton and positron plasmas in the combined Penning-neutral trap, and compared these to lifetimes without the neutral trap fields. The magnetic well depth was 0.6 T, deep enough to trap ground state antihydrogen atoms of up to about 0.4 K in temperature. We have demonstrated that both particle species can be stored for times long enough to permit antihydrogen production and trapping studies.     

Two‐Step Synthesis of 1,3‐Disubstituted 3,4‐Dihydro‐4‐thioxoquinazolin‐2(1H)‐ones from 1‐Bromo‐2‐fluorobenzenes

An efficient synthesis of 3‐alkyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐4‐thioxobenzoquinazolin‐2(1H)‐ones 3 has been accomplished in two steps and in satisfactory yields from 1‐bromo‐2‐fluorobenzenes 1 . Thus, the reaction of 1‐fluoro‐2‐lithiobenzenes, generated by the Br/Li exchange between 1 and BuLi, with alkyl isothiocyanates, gives N‐alkyl‐2‐fluorobenzothioamides 2 , which, in turn, react with a series of isocyanates in the presence of NaH to give the desired products 3 .     

Synthesis of 2,3‐Diaryl‐3H‐pyrrolo[2,3‐c]pyridin‐3‐ol Derivatives by the Reaction of Aryl(3‐isocyanopyridin‐4‐yl)methanones with Aryl Grignard Reagents

The reaction of aryl(3‐isocyanopyridin‐4‐yl)methanones 1 , easily prepared from commercially available pyridin‐3‐amine, with aryl Grignard reagents gave, after aqueous workup, 2,3‐diaryl‐3H‐pyrrolo[2,3‐c]pyridin‐3‐ols 2 . These rather unstable alcohols were O‐acylated with Ac₂O in pyridine in the presence of a catalytic amount of 4‐(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) to afford the corresponding 2,3‐diaryl‐3H‐pyrrolo[2,3‐c]pyridin‐3‐yl acetates 3 in relatively good yields.     

Synthesis of 9,9‐Disubstituted 9H‐Pyrrolo[1,2‐a]indoles by Hydriodic Acid‐Catalyzed Cyclization of 1‐[2‐(1‐Aryl(or methyl)ethenyl)phenyl]‐1H‐pyrroles

A novel method is reported for the synthesis of 9,9‐disubstituted 9H‐pyrrolo[1,2‐a]indoles. Cyclization of 1‐[2‐(1‐aryl(or methyl)ethenyl)phenyl]‐1H‐pyrroles, which can be easily prepared from 2‐(1‐aryl(or methyl)ethenyl)anilines, proceeds smoothly, in general, at 0° in the presence of a catalytic (or an equimolar) amount of HI in MeCN to provide the desired products.     

In situ observation of pressure-induced electrical resistance changes in zirconium: pressure calibration points for the large volume press at 8 and 35 GPa

Simultaneous in situ pressure–resistance measurements were carried out up to 40 GPa using a multianvil apparatus with synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Pressure-induced electrical resistance changes in zirconium were measured at ambient temperatures and two discontinuities were observed around the α–ω and ω–β structural phase transitions. The transition pressures were strictly determined from simultaneous measurements of the electrical resistance and in situ XRD as 7.96±0.16 and 34.5±0.3 GPa, respectively, using an equation of state for gold as the pressure scale. The precisely determined transition pressures are available for room temperature pressure calibration points for large volume presses installed at offline laboratories.
