Simultaneous attainment of high electron and ion temperatures in discharges with internal transport barriers in ASDEX upgrade

Internal transport barriers have been demonstrated to exist also under conditions with T(e) approximately T(i) approximately 10 keV and predominant electron heating of the tokamak core region. Central electron cyclotron heating was added to neutral beam injection-heated ASDEX Upgrade discharges with a preexisting internal transport barrier, established through programmed current ramping leading to shear reversal. Compared to a reference internal transport barrier discharge without electron cyclotron resonance heating, the electron heat conductivity in the barrier region was found not to increase, in spite of a fivefold increase in electron heat flux, and also angular momentum and ion energy transport did not deteriorate.     

Z4-Kerdock Codes, Orthogonal Spreads, and Extremal Euclidean Line-Sets

When m is odd, spreads in an orthogonal vector space of type⁺(2m + 2,2) are related to binary Kerdock codes and extremalline-sets in 2^{m + 1} with prescribed angles. Spreads in a 2m-dimensionalbinary symplectic vector space are related to Kerdock codesover Z₄ and extremal line-sets in with prescribed angles. These connections involve binary, realand complex geometry associated with extraspecial 2-groups.A geometric map from symplectic to orthogonal spreads is shownto induce the Gray map from a corresponding Z₄-Kerdock codeto its binary image. These geometric considerations lead tothe construction, for any odd composite m, of large numbersof Z₄-Kerdock codes. Measure Density and Extension of Besov and Triebel–Lizorkin Functions

We show that a domain is an extension domain for a Haj?asz–Besov or for a Haj?asz–Triebel–Lizorkin space if and only if it satisfies a measure density condition. We use a modification of the Whitney extension where integral averages are replaced by median values, which allows us to handle also the case \(0<p<1\). The necessity of the measure density condition is derived from embedding theorems; in the case of Haj?asz–Besov spaces we apply an optimal Lorentz-type Sobolev embedding theorem which we prove using a new interpolation result. This interpolation theorem says that Haj?asz–Besov spaces are intermediate spaces between \(L^p\) and Haj?asz–Sobolev spaces. Our results are proved in the setting of a metric measure space, but most of them are new even in the Euclidean setting, for instance, we obtain a characterization of extension domains for classical Besov spaces \(B^s_{p,q}\), \(0<s<1\), \(0<p<\infty \), \(0<q\le \infty \), defined via the \(L^p\)-modulus of smoothness of a function.     

Quantitative 2D HSQC (Q-HSQC) via suppression of J-dependence of polarization transfer in NMR spectroscopy: application to wood lignin

A quantitative method to record (1)H-(13)C correlation NMR spectra (Q-HSQC) is presented. The suppression of (1)J(CH)-dependence is achieved by modulating the polarization transfer delays of HSQC. In addition, the effect of homonuclear couplings, as well as relaxation during the pulse sequence are discussed. We developed the Q-HSQC approach for the quantitative analysis of wood lignin, a complex polymer where it has been difficult to obtain reliable data on the relative amounts of different structural units. The current method is applicable to a variety of complex mixtures, where normal 1D (1)H- and (13)C-NMR methods fail.     

On the Mechanism of the Reactivity of 1,3‐Dialkylimidazolium Salts under Basic to Acidic Conditions: A Combined Kinetic and Computational Study

Comprehensive spectroscopic kinetic studies illustrate an alternative mechanism for the traditional free‐carbene intermediated H/D exchange reaction of 1,3‐dialkylimidazolium salts under neutral (D₂O) and acidic conditions (DCl/D₂O 35 wt % solution). The deuteration of high purity [bmim]Cl in D₂O is studied at different temperatures, in absence of catalyst or impurities, to yield an activation energy. DFT transition‐state modelling, of a small water cluster and [bmim] cation, also yields an activation energy which strongly supports the proposed mechanism. The presence of basic impurities are shown to significantly enhance the exchange reaction, which brings into question the need for further analysis of technical purities of ionic liquids and the implications for a wide range of chemical reactions in such media.     

Application of Combinatorial Procedures in the Search for Serine-Protease-Like Activity with Focus on the Acyl Transfer Step

Recursive deconvolution of a 729-membered peptide library has identified three active sequences, in which both Ser and His are present in one of the two tripeptidic chains generated on a steroidal scaffold (see structural formula), for the cleavage of an activated p-nitrophenyl ester. This combinatorial approach aims at searching for serine-protease-like activity.
