Discussion on a possible neutrino detector located in India

We have identified some important and worthwhile physics opportunities with a possible neutrino detector located in India. Particular emphasis is placed on the geographical advantage with a stress on the complimentary aspects with respect to other neutrino detectors already in operation.     

Synthetic Routes to Ninhydrins. Preparation of Ninhydrin, 5-Methoxyninhydrin,and 5-(Methylthio)Ninhydrin

Two syntheses of 5-methoxyninhydrin (2,2-dihydroxy-5-methoxy-1,3-indanedione) are described. One method employs a novel and efficient two step route, which begins with commercially available 6-methoxy-1-indanone. The application of this strategy for the preparation of a new ninhydrin derivative, 5-(methylthio)ninhydrin, and ninhydrin is also presented.     

A Synthesis of Two Novel Benzo[f]ninhydrin Analogs: 6-Methoxybenzo[f]ninhydrin and Thieno[f]ninhydrin

Improved methodology for the synthesis of benzo[f]ninhydrin (1) is described. The generality of this approach is illustrated with the synthesis of two novel analogs, 6-methoxybenzo[f]ninhydrin (3) and thieno[f]ninhydrin (4).     

Nuclear and muon hyperfine techniques in the study of heavy-fermion superconductors

Nuclear magnetic resonance and relaxation, and the related techniques of muon spin rotation and relaxation, have been used to study local spin polarization and quasiparticle excitations in the heavy-fermion superconductors CeCu₂Si₂, pure and thoriated UBe₁₃, and UPt₃. Measurements of nuclear and positive muon Knight shifts, linewidths, and spinlattice relaxation rates give some hints as to the nature of Cooper pairing in these exotic materials.     

Zero‐field μ+SR study of the colossal magnetoresistance material La0.67Ca0.33MnO3

Zero‐field μ⁺SR and resistivity experiments on La_0.67Ca_0.33MnO₃ powder show that the ferromagnetic transition temperature (T_C=274\ K) and resistivity peak temperature coincide to within 1 K, about 10 K higher than T_C determined from the bulk magnetization. The sublattice magnetization \nu_μ(T) is well described for T ≤ T_C by (1-T/T_C)^β , where β =0.345 ± 0.015. Unusual relaxation dynamics suggest a wide distribution of Mn‐ion correlation times. These results are discussed in terms of the effects of polarons on the spin and charge dynamics. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Novel fused silica capillary columns: Surface modification through controlled doping of the preform-tube

A method has been developed for fabricating fused silica capillary columns which have specific surface properties but still retain the excellent strength, flexibility, and resilience of pure fused silica. By using the Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition process (MCVD), typically used for the production of optical fiber lightguides, inorganic dopants such as Al, Nd, Ge, and P can be introduced into the preform-tube by MCVD. Doped columns have a wide range of specific surface properties, and columns with undoped fused silica prepared by MCVD are more chemically inert and less acidic than columns prepared by conventional methods. This paper describes the method for fabricating capillaries and the initial studies to characterize them.
