The use of a hyperthermal hydrogen induced cross-linking process to prepare laminates comprising polypropylene, poly(isobutylene-co-isoprene), and poly(vinyl acetate) is described. In this new, milder alternative to conventional plasma techniques, neutral molecular hydrogen projectiles were used to create carbon radicals on impacted surfaces by collision-induced dissociation of C-H bonds, and this process was used to cross-link polymers on a polypropylene surface. It was demonstrated that multiple layers of cross-linked materials could be added, creating polymer laminates with each layer introducing new functionalities and properties. In particular, the present work shows that the process is largely nondestructive toward ester functionalities. First, the esters were grafted to become nonleachable. Then, the esters were subsequently hydrolyzed to convert the surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. Afterward, the esters could be recovered by simple esterification demonstrating that further chemical transformations were possible.  相似文献

A Radiofrequency ESR spectrometer/imager is described. Modified from a Surrey Medical Imaging Systems NMR spectroscopy/imaging console, it uses a PC with associated waveform controller cards to perform CW ESR. Digital phase-sensitive detection is provided by a vector processor. The “target-field”-designed magnet and gradients are driven by audio amplifiers. The dual-channel broad-band RF bridge has a reflection homodyne configuration. Birdcage coils have been built that resonate near 200 MHz. Spectra and images of lossy samples of up to 4 cm diameter have been acquired.  相似文献

We present evidence for a nonsingular origin of the Universe with intial conditions determined by quantum physics and relativistic gravity. In particular, we establish that the present temperature of the microwave background and the present density of the Universe agree well with our predictions from these intial conditions, after evolution to the present age using the Einstein-Friedmann equation. Remarkably, the quantum origin for the Universe naturally allows its evolution at exactly the critical density. We also discuss the consequences of these results to some fundamental aspects of quantum physics in the early Universe.  相似文献

A simple theoretical model is presented for the recently reported driven echo. It is shown that driven echoes may be used to measure the spin coherence time in the rotating frame, T2p. Some features of the model, including its relationship to the rotary echo, are examined experimentally for photoexcited triplet-state benzophenone at 77 K.  相似文献

Butyl rubber‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) graft copolymers with high PEO content (40–83 wt %) were synthesized by the functionalization and activation of the double bond moiety of butyl rubber containing high (7 mol %) isoprene content and subsequent reaction with PEO of different molecular weights from 750 to 5000 g/mol. The properties of these copolymers, along with other butyl rubber‐PEO graft copolymers were studied in films and in aqueous solution. Despite the high PEO content, films of the copolymers were quite stable in water with respect to mass loss and were capable of releasing an encapsulated probe molecule in a manner that was dependent on the PEO content. At high PEO content they were resistant to the adhesion and growth of C2C12 cells. Despite the resistance of films to dissolution, it was possible to prepare nanosized aqueous assemblies via a THF‐water exchange process and the sizes of the assemblies were tuned by their method of preparation. The assemblies were also able to encapsulate a probe molecule and were found to be nontoxic in vitro. Combined, this set of properties makes these new amphiphilic copolymers promising for a wide range of potential applications. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. In the design of lipid-coated microbubble ultrasound contrast agents for molecular imaging and targeted drug delivery, the surface distribution of the shell species is important because it dictates such properties as ligand location, brush coverage, and amount of drug loading. We used a combination of spectroscopy and microscopy techniques to test the prevailing notion that the main phosphatidyl choline (PC) and lipopolymer species are completely miscible within the monolayer shell. NMR spectroscopy showed that the shell composition is roughly equivalent to the bulk lipid ratio. FTIR spectroscopy showed a sharp melting peak corresponding to the main phase-transition temperature of the main PC species, with no observed pretransitions while scanning from room temperature, indicating a single PC-rich ordered phase. Electron and fluorescence microscopy showed a heterogeneous microstructure with dark (ordered) domains and bright (disordered) regions. Domain formation was thermotropic and reversible. Fluorescent labeling of the lipopolymer following shell formation showed that it partitions preferentially into the disordered interdomain regions. The ordered domains, therefore, are composed primarily of PC, and the disordered interdomain regions are enriched in lipopolymer. Phase heterogeneity was observed at all lipopolymer concentrations (0.5 to 20 mol %), and the degree of phase separation increased with lipopolymer content. The composition and temperature dependence of the microstructure indicates that phase separation is driven thermodynamically rather than being a kinetically trapped relic of the shell-formation process. The overall high variation in microstructure, including the existence of anomalous three-phase coexistence, highlights the nonequilibrium (history-dependent) nature of the monolayer shell.  相似文献

Synthetic helical foldamers are of significant interest for mimicking the conformations of naturally occurring molecules while at the same time introducing new structures and properties. In particular, oligoamides of aromatic amino acids are attractive targets, as their folding is highly predictable and stable. Here the design and synthesis of new amphipathic helical oligoamides based on quinoline-derived amino acids having either hydrophobic or cationic side chains are described. Their structures were characterized in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and in solution by NMR. Results of these studies suggest that an oligomer as short as a pentamer folds into a stable helical conformation in protic solvents, including MeOH and H(2)O. The introduction of polar proteinogenic side chains to these foldamers, as described here for the first time, promises to provide possibilities for the biological applications of these molecules. In particular, amphipathic helices are versatile targets to explore due to their importance in a variety of biological processes, and the unique structure and properties of the quinoline-derived oligoamides may allow new structure-activity relationships to be developed.  相似文献

This paper analyzes Thomas Bayes' essay of 1763, together with the additions by Richard Price, in relation to (1) historical influences and (2) the Bayesianism of the 20th century. As regards (1), historical evidence is presented linking Price with Hume, and it is argued that Price's additions are likely to have been written as an attempt to solve Hume's problem of induction. As regards (2), it is shown that Bayes' billiard table example is so constructed as to avoid the objections to Bayesianism made, in our own time, by R. A. Fisher and J. Neyman. Bayes did, however, introduce controversial Bayesian assumptions in his scholium, and was therefore a Bayesian—though a cautious Bayesian.  相似文献
