Taming Gold(I)–Counterion Interplay in the De‐aromatization of Indoles with Allenamides

A careful interplay between the π electrophilicity of a cationic Au^I center and the basicity of the corresponding counterion allowed for the chemo‐ and regioselective inter‐ as well as intramolecular de‐aromatization of 2,3‐disubstituted indoles with allenamides. The silver‐free bifunctional Lewis acid/Brønsted base complex [{2,4‐(tBu)₂C₆H₃O}₃PAuTFA] assisted the formation of a range of densely functionalized indolenines under mild conditions.     

Exploring Weak Ligand–Protein Interactions by Long‐Lived NMR States: Improved Contrast in Fragment‐Based Drug Screening

Ligands that have an affinity for protein targets can be screened very effectively by exploiting favorable properties of long‐lived states (LLS) in NMR spectroscopy. In this work, we describe the use of LLS for competitive binding experiments to measure accurate dissociation constants of fragments that bind weakly to the ATP binding site of the N‐terminal ATPase domain of heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90), a therapeutic target for cancer treatment. The LLS approach allows one to characterize ligands with an exceptionally wide range of affinities, since it can be used for ligand concentrations [L] that are several orders of magnitude smaller than the dissociation constants K_D. This property makes the LLS method particularly attractive for the initial steps of fragment‐based drug screening, where small molecular fragments that bind weakly to a target protein must be identified, which is a difficult task for many other biophysical methods.     

Stereocontrolled Synthesis of 1,5‐Stereogenic Centers through Three‐Carbon Homologation of Boronic Esters

Allylic pinacol boronic esters are stable toward 1,3‐borotropic rearrangement. We developed a Pd^II‐mediated isomerization process that gives di‐ or trisubstituted allylic boronic esters with high E selectivity. The combination of this method with lithiation–borylation enables the synthesis of carbon chains that bear 1,5‐stereogenic centers. The utility of this method has been demonstrated in a formal synthesis of (+)‐jasplakinolide.     

Work function and negative electron affinity of ultrathin barium fluoride films

Thin films of barium fluorides with different thicknesses were deposited on GaAs substrate by electron beam evaporation. The aim of the work was to identify the best growth conditions for the production of coatings with a low work function suitable for the anode of hybrid thermionic-photovoltaic (TIPV) devices. The chemical composition and work function φ of the films with different thicknesses were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The lowest value of φ = 2.1 eV was obtained for the film with a thickness of ~2 nm. In the valence band spectra of the films at low kinetic energy, near the cutoff, a characteristic peak of negative electron affinity was present. This effect contributed to a further reduction of the film's work function.     

Divergent Strain‐Release Amino‐Functionalization of [1.1.1]Propellane with Electrophilic Nitrogen‐Radicals

Herein we report the development of a photocatalytic strategy for the divergent preparation of functionalized bicyclo[1.1.1]pentylamines. This approach exploits, for the first time, the ability of nitrogen‐radicals to undergo strain‐release reaction with [1.1.1]propellane. This reactivity is facilitated by the electrophilic nature of these open‐shell intermediates and the presence of strong polar effects in the transition‐state for C?N bond formation/ring‐opening. With the aid of a simple reductive quenching photoredox cycle, we have successfully harnessed this novel radical strain‐release amination as part of a multicomponent cascade compatible with several external trapping agents. Overall, this radical strategy enables the rapid construction of novel amino‐functionalized building blocks with potential application in medicinal chemistry programs as p‐substituted aniline bioisosteres.     

Analysis of a New Variational Model to Restore Point-Like and Curve-Like Singularities in Imaging

The paper is concerned with the analysis of a new variational model to restore point-like and curve-like singularities in biological images. To this aim we investigate the variational properties of a suitable energy which governs these pathologies. Finally in order to realize numerical experiments we minimize, in the discrete setting, a regularized version of this functional by fast descent gradient scheme.
