Cognitive Maps of Decision-Makers in a Complex Game

This paper illustrates the use of a cognitive mapping technique to examine the behaviour and perceptions of individual decision-makers. A cognitive map is a representation of the subjective decision-making environment of an individual. Seven military officers each played two scenarios in a research wargame. Analysis of their communications in the game showed that individual players were remarkably consistent over the two scenarios, but their perceptions of their common decision-making environment differed noticeably. Differences related to the size and complexity of their cognitive maps, the detailed interpretation of the maps, the players' confidence and anticipation of the future and the way in which the maps were altered as time progressed.

Calculation of the nonlinear stress of polymers in oscillatory shear fields

Complex moduli are calculated for the lowest-order deviations from linearity of the stress in an oscillatory shear field. The calculations involve solution of an equation, recently proposed by Doi, which goes beyond the “independent alignment approximation” of the Doi-Edwards theory of polymer dynamics. The new equation incorporates various reptative motions of a polymer in the effective constraining tube induced by entanglements, viz. Brownian motion along the tube and the systematic motion in response to changes in the length of the tube accompanying affine deformation.     

The acoustic signature of bubbles fragmenting in sheared flow

Measurements of the sound of bubbles fragmenting in fluid shear are presented and analyzed. The frequency, amplitude, and decay rate of the acoustic emissions from 1.8-mm-radius bubbles fragmenting between opposed fluid jets have been determined. A broad band of frequencies (1.8 to 30 kHz) is observed with peak pressure amplitudes in the range of 0.03 to 2 Pa. While the peak pressure amplitudes show no significant scaling with frequency, the frequency dependence of the decay rates is consistent with the sum of thermal and acoustic radiation losses.     

Relative importance of X...O=C vs. X...X halogen bonding as structural determinants in 4-halotriaroylbenzenes

The structures of 4-chloro- and 4-bromotribenzoylbenzene, as well as a solid solution prepared from these two components, are isomorphous and dominated by C-X...O=C interactions, whereas type-II I...I interactions are important in the 4-iodo derivative.
