INTERPHOTORECEPTOR RETINOID-BINDING PROTEIN AND α-TOCOPHEROL PRESERVE THE ISOMERIC AND OXIDATION STATE OF RETINOL

Retinol decomposes rapidly into a number of products, including its aldehyde form, retinal, when introduced into buffer in phospholipid vesicles or ethanol. Interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein at low concentrations is found to protect retinol from isomerization and oxidation. The addition of alpha-tocopherol to either liposomes or an ethanolic-buffer solution also prevents decomposition. Neither of these agents interferes with the successful regeneration of pigment with 9-cis retinal in rod outer segment preparations or the restoration of sensitivity by retinoids in isolated rod photoreceptors.     

On the nucleolus of NTU-games defined by multiple objective linear programs

In this article we derive a class of cooperative games with non-transferable utility from multiple objective linear programs. This is done in order to introduce the nucleolus, a solution concept from cooperative game theory, as a solution to multiple objective linear problems.We show that the nucleolus of such a game is a singleton, which is characterized by inclusion in the least core and the reduced game property. Furthermore the nucleolus satisfies efficiency, anonymity and strategic equivalence.We also present a polynomially bounded algorithm for computation of the nucleolus. Letn be the number of objective functions. The nucleolus is obtained by solving at most2n linear programs. Initially the ideal point is computed by solvingn linear programs. Then a sequence of at mostn linear programs is solved, and the nucleolus is obtained as the unique solution of the last program.Financial support from Nordic Academy for Advanced Study (NorFA) is gratefully acknowledged. Evidence for near equality of neutron and proton radii in the N = 82 isotones

Quasielastic (p, n) data have been taken on the ¹³⁸Ba, ¹⁴²Nd and ¹⁴⁴Sm isotones at E_p = 26 MeV. Analysis with a folding model suggests a ratio of neutron-to-proton rms radii near unity which does not increase with increasing neutron excess.     

ESR study of the initial reaction of the photodegradation of nylon 6

The free radicals formed on irradiation of nylon 6 have been studied by means of electron spin resonance (ESR). The irradiation was performed at liquid nitrogen temperature with wavelengths in the region of solar radiation. The spectrum so obtained could best be fitted by assuming ? CH₂? ?H? CH₂? and ? CH₂? ??O to be the trapped radicals. The assignment of the spectrum supports the idea that the first step in photodegradation is the breaking of the amide bond. The splitting constant of the α proton of the alkyl radical has been found to be nearly the same for drawn and undrawn yarn. This strongly suggests that the low-energy radiation is capable of breaking bonds only in the unoriented amorphous regions.
