Spectrophotofluorometric determination of terbium and europium in potassium carbonate solution

The conditions for the spectrophotofluorometric determination of terbium and europium, in solutions of potassium carbonate, have been established. The apparent excitation and fluorescence wavelengths used, respectively, are 245 mmu and 550 mmu for terbium and 400 mmu and 620 mmu for europium. The fluorescence varies linearly with the concentration of terbium and europium in the range 0.3-70 mug, of terbium/ml and 4-800 mug of europium/ml. Large amounts of gadolinium, lutetium and yttrium do not interfere. Cerium(IV) interferes seriously.     

Total serum protein N-glycome profiling on a capillary electrophoresis-microfluidics platform

We implemented 8-aminopyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid (APTS)-labeled asparagine-linked glycan (N-glycan) profiling on a microfluidic electrophoresis platform. Using 11.5 cm effective length etched channels and 4% linear polyacrylamide as the separation matrix, the major N-glycans in human serum were profiled in 12 min with a resolution comparable to what is achieved for these analytes on gel-based DNA sequencers. This demonstration suggests a practical clinical application for high-speed compact analyzers which might be uniquely based on microfluidic devices.     

A note on the boson-fermion correspondence and infinite dimensional groups

We show how to construct irreducible projective representations of the infinite dimensional Lie group Map (S ¹, ), by embedding it into the group of Bogoliubov automorphisms of the CAR. Using techniques of G. Segal for extending certain representations of Map (S ¹, SU(2)) we show that our representations extend to give representations of a certain infinite dimensional superalgebra. We relate our work to the well known boson-fermion correspondence which exists in 1+1 dimensions.

Testing schedule performance and reliability for train stations

On busy congested rail networks, randomdelays of trains are prevalent, and these delays have knock-on effects which result in a significant or substantial proportion of scheduled services being delayed or rescheduled. Here we develop and experiment with a simulation model to predict the probability distributions of these knock-on delays at stations, when faced with typical patterns of on-the-day exogenous delays. These methods can be used to test and compare the reliability of proposed schedules, or schedule changes, before adopting them. They can also be used to explore how schedule reliability may be affected by proposed changes in operating policies, for example, changes in minimum headways or dwell times, or changes in the infrastructure such as, layout of lines, platforms or signals. This model generates a reliability analysis for each train type, line and platform. We can also use the model to explore some policy issues, and to show how punctuality and reliability are affected by changes in the distributions of exogenous delays.
