Memory in the occurrence of earthquakes

We study the statistics of the recurrence times tau between earthquakes above a certain magnitude M in six (one global and five regional) earthquake catalogs. We find that the distribution of the recurrence times strongly depends on the previous recurrence time tau0, such that small and large recurrence times tend to cluster in time. This dependence on the past is reflected in both the conditional mean recurrence time and the conditional mean residual time until the next earthquake, which increase monotonically with tau0. As a consequence, the risk of encountering the next event within a certain time span after the last event depends significantly on the past, an effect that has to be taken into account in any effective earthquake prognosis.     

Regulation of stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 after central and peripheral nerve lesions

Background  

Interruption of mature axons activates a cascade of events in neuronal cell bodies which leads to various outcomes from functional regeneration in the PNS to the failure of any significant regeneration in the CNS. One factor which seems to play an important role in the molecular programs after axotomy is the stearoyl Coenzyme A-desaturase-1 (SCD-1). This enzyme is needed for the conversion of stearate into oleate. Beside its role in membrane synthesis, oleate could act as a neurotrophic factor, involved in signal transduction pathways via activation of protein kinases C.     

Theoretical analysis of a simple yet efficient portable magnetic separator design for separation of magnetic nano/micro-carriers from human blood flow

A technology that could physically remove substances from the blood such as biological, chemical, or radiological toxins could dramatically improve treatment of disease. One method in development proposes to use magnetic-polymer spheres to selectively bind toxins and remove them by magnetic filtration. Although magnetic filtration is a developed technology, the clinical boundary conditions described here require a new filter design. We investigated the removal of toxin-bound magnetic carriers from the blood stream using 2-D FEMLAB simulations. The magnetic separator consisted of a permanent magnet with parallel ferromagnetic prisms on the faces and in contact with a straight tube carrying the magnetic-polymer spheres in suspension. We varied the following parameters: blood flow velocity, the size, and number of ferromagnetic prisms, and the ferromagnetic material in both prisms and magnets. The capture efficiency reached maximum values when the depth of the prisms equaled the diameter of the tubing and the saturation magnetization of the prism material equaled twice that of the magnet. With this design a piece of 2 mm (diameter) tube carrying the fluid resulted in 95% capture of 2.0 μm magnetic-polymer spheres at 10 cm/s flow velocity.

The central three‐membered ring in the title compound, trans‐1,1′,1′′‐cyclo­propane‐1,2,3‐triyl­tris­(cyclo­propanol), C₁₂H₁₈O₃, shows pronounced asymmetry of the bond lengths, which is induced by the different orientations of the substituents. A network of hydrogen bonds links the mol­ecules into sheets.
