Singlet-Higgs-Boson signals at hadron colliders

Many extensions of the Standard Model includeSU(2) _L ×U(1) _Y singlet higgs bosons,h ⁰, and also vector-like fermions which couple to it. The production and detection possibilities of such singlet neutral scalars at hadron colliders are considered for different scenarios of vectorlike fermions. We find that for some values of masses and couplings, detection at the CERN large hadron collider (LHC) appears to be a distinct possibility, while at the Fermilab Tevatron upgrade theh ⁰ might be observed only in very favourable circumstances.     

Non-static electromagnetic fields in general relativity. IV

An investigation is made of Rainich's ‘already unified field theory’ from the standpoint of continuous groups of motions, and a solution is obtained for the case where the electromagnetic field is non-static and the space-time admits a three-parameter continuous group of motions whose minimum invariant varieties are three-dimensional spaces. There exists a divergence-free electromagnetic field for values of t at which the metric is not singular.     

Steady state thermal stresses in an elastic solid bounded by two cones

Zusammenfassung Es wird für das Problem der Wärmespannungen in einem kegelförmig begrenzten elastischen Körper eine Ähnlichkeitstransformation entwickelt. Ist die Temperatur an der freien Oberfläche als Potenz des Abstandes von der Spitze vorgeschrieben, so lässt sich ein Satz von Ähnlichkeitsvariablen angeben, welcher die thermoelastischen Beziehungen auf Legendre-Gleichungen reduziert und damit der Lösung leicht zugänglich macht. Die Rechnung ist für den Sonderfall konstant gehaltener Oberflächentemperatur im einzelnen durchgeführt.

Quark masses from qq potentials

Assuming confinement and chiral symmetry breaking, we have calculated constituent quark masses from phenomenological q$\text{q}$ potentials by using a BCS-like gap equation.     

Potential of magnetic resonance spectroscopy to detect metastasis in axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer

Focused pathological evaluation of axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer is gaining importance. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy that assesses the whole of the specimen has the potential in evaluating micrometastases. The biochemical changes associated with breast cancer metastases in axillary nodes by in vitro NMR and its use in the detection of axillary metastases in a clinical setting in comparison with conventional histopathology is presented in this study. Eighty-eight lymph nodes obtained from 30 patients with breast cancer were investigated. Histopathology revealed metastases in 20 nodes from 11 patients, while in vitro NMR spectroscopy revealed metastases in 22 nodes. Out of these 22 nodes, 16 were the same, which showed metastases on histopathology, while 6 nodes have shown metastases only on in vitro magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). These 6 nodes with suspicion of metastases on MRS were subjected to reevaluation with serial sectioning and immunohistochemistry, but no additional metastases were revealed. Forty metabolites could be identified from the MR spectrum of lymph nodes. The levels of the glycerophosphocholine-phosphocholine (GPC-PC), choline, lactate, alanine and uridine diphosphoglucose were elevated significantly in nodes with metastases. In addition, the intensity ratio of GPC-PC/threonine (Thr) was higher in nodes with metastases, and using this as marker, MRS detected the axillary metastases with a sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of 80%, 91% and 88%, respectively. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) lowered the concentrations of GPC-PC and GPC-PC/Thr ratio. The accuracy of MRS in detecting metastases was 75% in patients who received NACT (n=9) as compared to 96% in those who did not (n=21). Our results demonstrate the potential of in vitro MRS in characterizing the metabolite profile of the axillary nodes with breast cancer metastases. It detected axillary metastases with reasonable accuracy and can be complementary to histopathological evaluation and immunohistochemistry.     

The interplay of hydrophobic and electrostatic effects in the surfactant-induced aggregation/deaggregation of chlorin p6

The aggregation/deaggregation of chlorin p6 with the surfactants CTAB, SDS, and TX 100 have been studied by using absorption, fluorescence, and light scattering techniques. The ionic surfactants are found to cause aggregation of fluorophore at submicellar concentrations. The aggregates dissolve at higher surfactant concentrations to yield micellized monomers. This is rationalized by the interplay of electrostatic and hydrophobic effects. A prominent pH effect is observed in the ionic surfactant induced aggregation process as the charge on the fluorophore is controlled by the pH of the medium. Interestingly, the neutral TX-100 also induces aggregation of chlorin p6 at low concentrations, indicating that hydrophobic effects by themselves can cause aggregation unless there is a hindrance by repulsive electrostatic effects.     

Mirror inversion of quantum states in linear registers

Transfer of data in linear quantum registers can be significantly simplified with preengineered but not dynamically controlled interqubit couplings. We show how to implement a mirror inversion of the state of the register in each excitation subspace with respect to the center of the register. Our construction is especially appealing as it requires no dynamical control over individual interqubit interactions. If, however, individual control of the interactions is available then the mirror inversion operation can be performed on any substring of qubits in the register. In this case, a sequence of mirror inversions can generate any permutation of a quantum state of the involved qubits.     

Instability of Interfaces in the Antiferromagnetic XXZ Chain at Zero Temperature

 For the antiferromagnetic, highly anisotropic XZ and XXZ quantum spin chains, we impose periodic boundary conditions on chains with an odd number of sites to force an interface (or kink) into the chain. We prove that the energy of the interface depends on the momentum of the state. This shows that at zero temperature the interface in such chains is not stable. This is in contrast to the ferromagnetic XXZ chain for which the existence of localized interface ground states has been proven for any amount of anisotropy in the Ising-like regime. Does Solvent Influence the Ground-state Tautomeric Population of Hypericin?¶

Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements indicate that hypericin exists in the same "normal" tautomeric form irrespective of whether the solvent is dimethyl sulfoxide or tetrahydrofuran. This result is discussed in the context of previous experimental and theoretical work. It is concluded that solvent perturbations cannot induce tautomerization in hypericin.     

Are messages of R-parity violating supersymmetry hidden within top quark signals?

In an R-parity nonconserving supersymmetric theory, the lighter stop can dominantly decay into b&mgr; and btau if R-parity breaking has to explain the neutrino mass and mixing pattern suggested by the data on atmospheric muon neutrinos. This should give rise to dilepton + dijet and single - lepton + jets, signals identical with those of the top quark at the Fermilab Tevatron. One can thus constrain the stop parameter space using the current top search data and can similarly look for the first signals of supersymmetry at the upgraded runs of the Tevatron.
