The constrained degree and fixed-point index theory for set-valued maps

In the first part of the paper we give a construction of a topological degree theory for set-valued tangent vector fields with convex and nonconvex values defined on nonsmooth closed subsets of a Banach space. The obtained homotopy invariant is an extension of the classical degree for vector fields on manifolds. In the second part we propose a fixed-point index for inward maps on arbitrary closed convex sets.     

Elastic backscattering of electrons from surfaces

A Monte Carlo algorithm is proposed for calculating the elastic reflection coefficient, η_E, for elements. The algorithm accounts for the multiple elastic scattering of electrons in solids. The calculated values of η_E compare well with the literature data for elements with atomic number up to 47 and at primary energies above 2 keV. The proposed Monte Carlo method makes it possible to determine the functional relation between η_E and the inelastic mean free path, λ. This relation turned out to be non-linear, arid it deviates from a similar relation based on published earlier single elastic scattering model. The deviation is especially pronounced for elements with medium atomic numbers. The calculated function $\text{η}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>E</mtext>}}\text{=}\text{f}\text{(λ)}$ offers a convenient method for determining the inelastic mean free path. The values of λ derived in the present work from published experimental values of η_E compare very well with the literature data.     

On the existence of general solutions of the initial-value problem for the nonlinear Boltzmann equation with a cut-off

We consider a Boltzmann gas which fills all of space and is under the influence of a field of conservative external force whose potential is bounded from below.Assuming the intermolecular force has a cut-off, we prove existence and uniqueness for the general solution of the nonlinear Maxwell-Boltzmann equation at least in a finite interval of time. The solution can be constructed by the method of successive approximations in corresponding complete spaces. Definitions of these spaces are connected with an exponential function of the total energy of the molecule.Some indications of future generalizations and investigations are given.     

Mass spectrometric studies of the formation and reactivity of trans-[PtCl2(Am)(piperidinopiperidine)] x HCl complexes with ubiquitin

trans-[PtCl2(Am)(pip-pip)] x HCl complexes, where Am = ammine, methylamine and dimethylamine, react with ubiquitin to form 1:1 covalent adducts. The platinum complexes bind exclusively to Met1 of ubiquitin forming trans-[PtCl(S-Met1-Ub)(Am)(pip-pip)] adducts. These adducts are reactive towards nucleophiles and react with deoxyguanosine (dGMP) to form the ternary trans-[Pt(dGMP)(S-Met1-Ub) (Am)(pip-pip)] complex which is stable in water and even in the presence of excess glutathione (GSH). Reaction of trans-[PtCl(S-Met1-Ub)(Am)(pip-pip)] with GSH resulted in the rapid formation of the ternary complex trans-[Pt(GS)(S-Met1-Ub)(Am)(pip-pip)] which was not stable and slowly lost the platinum moiety; after 7 days the platinum moiety was completely removed and the native ubiquitin was regenerated.     

Some Results Connected with the Class Number Problem in Real Quadratic Fields

We investigate arithmetic properties of certain subsets of square-free positive integers and obtain in this way some results concerning the class number h（d） of the real quadratic field Q（√d）. In particular, we give a new proof of the result of Hasse, asserting that in this case h（d） = 1 is possible only if d is of the form p, 2q or qr. where p.q. r are primes and q≡r≡3（mod 4）.     

The acid-catalysed reaction of thiols with alkyl 2,3-dideoxy-glyc-2-enopyranosides or glycals

The acid-catalysed (HCl or SnCl₄) reaction of alkyl 2,3 dideoxy-glyc-2-enopyranosides or 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-D-glycals with thiols leads to mixtures of alkyl 2,3-dideoxy-1-thio-glyc-2-enopyranosides and 3-S-alkyl-3-thioglycals. Under equilibrium conditions the latter are the preponderant products of the reaction. Cross experiments have confirmed the intermediacy of the allylic carbocation in the reaction. A rationalization of the substitution reactions of 1,2- and 2,3-unsaturated sugars based on HSAB principle has been proposed.     

A Monte Carlo algorithm for solving systems of non-linear equations

A Monte Carlo method for solving systems of non-linear equations is presented and discussed. The method does not require the differentiation of left side functions of the system and provides the solution with arbitrary accuracy, although it may be applied only to systems with not too large a number of equations. Illustrative examples are given.
