Synthesis of Al–Cr decagonal quasicrystal nanoparticles and their temperature of phase transformation to stable crystal phase

The synthesis of Al–Cr single quasicrystal (QC) nanoparticles of the decagonal phase was achieved by introducing an advanced gas flow evaporation method. By obtaining successive electron diffraction patterns for single-QC nanoparticles, the phase transformation temperature of a single-QC nanoparticle was determined to be 700 °C. It was also determined that part of the QC nanoparticle decomposed into hex-Al₈Cr₅ and Al during the phase transformation. Since the grain growth did not occur during the phase transformation in the present experiment, the inherent phase transformation temperature could be measured.     

Sugar-sensitive thin films composed of concanavalin A and sugar-bearing polymers.

Layered thin films composed of concanavalin A (Con A) and sugar-bearing polymers were prepared by a layer-by-layer deposition of Con A and the polymer on a solid surface. The sugar-induced disintegration was studied. Con A-polymer layered films could be successfully prepared using a maltose-bearing polymer (PV-MA), while melibiose- and glucose-bearing polymers (PV-MEA and PV-G) did not afford a layered film, due to a weak affinity of PV-MEA and PV-G to Con A. The Con A/PV-MA layered film was stable in pH 7 and 8 solutions, while in a pH 6 medium the film was slightly unstable. The Con A/PV-MA film was disintegrated upon the addition of sugars in solution owing to a preferential binding of the sugars to the binding site of Con A in the film. The disintegration rate was dependent on the type of sugar and its concentration. The Con A/PV-MA film was disintegrated rapidly upon the addition of methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, while the rate was slower upon the addition of the same concentration of D-mannose, D-glucose and methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside. The present system may be useful for constructing sensitive devices that can release a drug or other functional molecules in response to sugars.     

Sliding acceleration of water droplets on a surface coated with fluoroalkylsilane and octadecyltrimethoxysilane

Both fluoroalkylsilane (FAS) and octadecyltrimethoxysilane (ODS) were coated on oxidized silicon wafers using soaking and CVD method. Smooth coatings with Ra values of less than 1 nm were attained. The slope of the sliding acceleration against the inverse of the droplet mass showed an inflection point. That point shifted to the direction of smaller droplets with decreasing FAS ratio to ODS. The water droplets’ length was increased when the sliding velocity was increased. Fluoroalkylsilane addition to ODS increases the interaction between water and the hydrophobic surface. Results showed that the sliding acceleration of a water droplet depends strongly on the surface ratio of these silanes.     

Optical Phase Conjugation in Polyesters with Cyanoazobenzene Units in the Side Chain

Efficient optical phase-conjugate (PC) signals in four kinds of novel polyester films containing cyanoazobenzene units in the side chain are reported. One of them can efficiently generate only the photoinduced anisotropy (PA) component of PC signal, while the other three films can simultaneously generate two types of PC signals, PA and holographic components. These polymers have good potential not only as a phase conjugator but also as a polarization-sensitive hologram-recording material.Presented at the International Commission for Optics Topical Meeting, Kyoto, 1994     

Fraunhofer Diffraction Pattern by a Slit Aperture between a Knife Edge and a Metal Cylinder

The Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of an aperture formed between a knife edge and a smooth surface of a turned metal cylinder or half cylinder is different from the diffraction pattern of an ideal slit aperture. The diffraction pattern is simulated by adding the light reflected by the cylinder surface to the pattern formed by a slit, and is measured using a cylinder that has been partly cut away so that it can represent either a full or half cylinder. The theoretical and measured patterns agree well with each other.     

High-Efficiency ZnCdSe/ZnSSe/ZnMgSSe Green Light-Emitting Diodes

Green light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were fabricated employing a ZnCdSe/ZnSSe triple quantum-well (TQW) active region surrounded by ZnMgSSe cladding layers grown on an n-type (100) GaAs substrate by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). A 3.5 mW pure green emission was observed for the surface-emitting LED device at a peak wavelength of 513.3 nm (2.415 eV) with a spectral half-width of 11.7 nm (55 meV) under a 20 mA (4.6 V) direct current at room temperature (25°C). These correspond to an external quantum efficiency of 7.2%, a power conversion efficiency of 3.8%, a luminous current efficiency of 66 lm/A, and a luminous efficiency of 14 lm/W.     

Hamiltonian cycles in n‐extendable graphs

A graph G of order at least 2n+2 is said to be n‐extendable if G has a perfect matching and every set of n independent edges extends to a perfect matching in G. We prove that every pair of nonadjacent vertices x and y in a connected n‐extendable graph of order p satisfy deg_G x+deg_G y ≥ p ? n ? 1, then either G is hamiltonian or G is isomorphic to one of two exceptional graphs. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cross-sectional observations of the cholesteric texture in a Cano wedge cell

A novel procedure for an observation of a liquid crystal texture is proposed by using a UV curable liquid crystal. Optical observations from a cross-section of the Cano wedge cell are demonstrated and layered structures of cholesteric LC are visualized clearly. The structures near the Grandjean lines are then revealed in detail from images. From the observations, it is confirmed that the texture near the Grandjean line is similar to fingerprint texture
