Quantitative simulation of photoacoustic signals using finite element modelling software

This paper aims to demonstrate the quantitative simulation of photoacoustic signals using finite element modelling software. The software Comsol Multiphysics is used to calculate the response of a differential Helmholtz resonator cell previously modeled using an electrical analogy. Quality factors and resonance frequencies are compared with experimental ones. Moreover, for the first time, the absorption coefficient of the gas sample and the laser intensity are also used to quantitatively predict photoacoustic signal that can be obtained in such a configuration.     

Hydrogen-bond accepting strength of protonated nicotine

Recent crystal structures of nicotine bound to the acetylcholine binding protein (AChBP) ended a long debate confirming that the pyridine nitrogen of nicotine is indeed hydrogen-bonded to receptor residues through a bridging water molecule. Here, we describe the first direct experimental evaluation of the hydrogen-bond affinity of the nicotinium pyridine nitrogen. The equilibrium constant of its association with a phenol is 1 order of magnitude greater than the association of the acetylcholine carbonyl oxygen.     

Asymptotics for the Low-Lying Eigenstates of the Schrödinger Operator with Magnetic Field near Corners

The Neumann realization for the Schr?dinger operator with magnetic field is considered in a bounded two-dimensional domain with corners. This operator is associated with a small semi-classical parameter h or, equivalently, with a large magnetic field.We investigate the behavior of its eigenpairs as h tends to zero, like in a semi-classical limit. We prove, in the situation where the domain is a polygon and the magnetic field is constant, that the lowest eigenvalues are exponentially close to those of model problems associated with the corners. We approximate the corresponding eigenvectors by linear combinations of functions concentrated in corners at the scale If the domain has curved sides and the magnetic field is smoothly varying, we exhibit a full asymptotics for eigenpairs in powers of Communicated by Christian Gérard Submitted: October 13, 2005 Accepted: December 19, 2005     

Stereoselective synthesis of alpha-C-Substituted 1,4-dideoxy-1,4-imino-D-galactitols. Toward original UDP-Galf mimics via cross-metathesis

[reaction: see text] Various alpha-C-substituted 1,4-dideoxy-1,4-imino-d-galactitols were prepared efficiently from 1-O-acetyl-2,3,5,6-tetra-O-benzyl-d-glucofuranose by a four-step sequence involving as the key step the highly syn-selective TMSOTf-catalyzed addition of silylated nucleophiles to a glycofuranosylamine. Cross-metathesis of the alpha-C-allylated iminogalactofuranose derivative with an original uridin-5'-yl vinylphosphonate led to novel UDP-galactofuranose mimics. Such compounds are of interest as potential inhibitors of the mycobacterial galactan biosynthesis pathway.     

A comparison of statistically optimized near field acoustic holography using single layer pressure-velocity measurements and using double layer pressure measurements

Statistically optimized near field acoustic holography (SONAH) is usually based on the assumption that all sources are on one side of the measurement plane whereas the other side is source free. An extension of the SONAH procedure based on measurement with an array of pressure-velocity probes has recently been suggested. An alternative method uses a double layer array of pressure transducers. Both methods make it possible to distinguish between sources on the two sides of the array and thus suppress the influence of extraneous noise and reflections coming from the "wrong" side. This letter compares the two methods.     

Stokes equations under nonlinear slip boundary conditions coupled with the heat equation: A priori error analysis

In this work, we consider the heat equation coupled with Stokes equations under threshold type boundary condition. The conditions for existence and uniqueness of the weak solution are made clear. Next we formulate the finite element problem, recall the conditions of its solvability, and study its convergence by making use of Babuska–Brezzi's conditions for mixed problems. Third we formulate an Uzawa's type iterative algorithm that separates the fluid from heat conduction, study its feasibility, and convergence. Finally the theoretical findings are validated by numerical simulations.     

Weak chemiluminescence emission during base induced rearrangement of G-factors

A rearrangement in basic medium of the natural endoperoxide G3-factor extracted from Eucalyptus grandis is described. Evidence to support a 1,2-dioxetane intermediate that decomposes with weak luminescence emission (quantum yield) is presented.
