Stereoselective synthesis of pyridinones: application to the synthesis of (-)-barrenazines

[reaction: see text] The stereoselective synthesis of pyridinones was accomplished by the nucleophilic addition of Grignard reagents to a chiral pyridinium salt derived from 4-methoxypyridine. This methodology was applied to an expedient synthesis of (-)-barrenazine A and B. After N-functionalization and 1,4-reduction of the pyridinone system, the corresponding alpha-amino piperidinones readily undergo dimerization to give the hexahydrodipyridinopyrazine skeleton of the barrenazine alkaloids.     

A comparison of statistically optimized near field acoustic holography using single layer pressure-velocity measurements and using double layer pressure measurements

Statistically optimized near field acoustic holography (SONAH) is usually based on the assumption that all sources are on one side of the measurement plane whereas the other side is source free. An extension of the SONAH procedure based on measurement with an array of pressure-velocity probes has recently been suggested. An alternative method uses a double layer array of pressure transducers. Both methods make it possible to distinguish between sources on the two sides of the array and thus suppress the influence of extraneous noise and reflections coming from the "wrong" side. This letter compares the two methods.     

Catalytic Asymmetric Syntheses of Alkylidenecyclopropanes from Allenoates with Donor-Acceptor and Diacceptor Diazo Reagents

The first diastereo- and enantioselective cyclopropanation reactions of electron-deficient allenes with donor-acceptor and diacceptor diazo reagents are described. The desired enantioenriched alkylidenecyclopropanes (ACPs) were obtained in high yields with high diastereo- and enantioselectivities in the presence of Rh₂((S)-TCPTAD)₄ or Rh₂((R)-BTPCP)₄ catalysts (up to 95 % yield, >95 : 5 d.r. and 99 : 1 e.r.). This methodology gave a direct access to ACPs bearing multiple electron-deficient substituents and allows to further expand the availability of ACPs chemistry. Interestingly, during the examination of the scope of this reaction, the asymmetric intramolecular C−H insertion reaction into tert-butyl group was observed as a side reaction with up to 94 : 6 e.r.     

Stokes equations under nonlinear slip boundary conditions coupled with the heat equation: A priori error analysis

In this work, we consider the heat equation coupled with Stokes equations under threshold type boundary condition. The conditions for existence and uniqueness of the weak solution are made clear. Next we formulate the finite element problem, recall the conditions of its solvability, and study its convergence by making use of Babuska–Brezzi's conditions for mixed problems. Third we formulate an Uzawa's type iterative algorithm that separates the fluid from heat conduction, study its feasibility, and convergence. Finally the theoretical findings are validated by numerical simulations.     

Weak chemiluminescence emission during base induced rearrangement of G-factors

A rearrangement in basic medium of the natural endoperoxide G3-factor extracted from Eucalyptus grandis is described. Evidence to support a 1,2-dioxetane intermediate that decomposes with weak luminescence emission (quantum yield) is presented.     

Asymmetric Pauson-Khand-type reaction mediated by Rh(I) catalyst at ambient temperature

An efficient asymmetric PKR mediated by Rh(I) catalyst at ambient temperature was developed. The reaction utilizing a Rh(I) catalyst bearing a (R)-3,5-diMeC4H4-BINAP ligand at 18-20 degrees C under a reduced partial pressure of CO (0.1 atm) provided PKR products in high chemical yield as well as high enantioselectivity.
