Pyrimidine derivatives XII. A convenient preparation of 6-formylpyrimidinedione and 2- and 3-formylpyridine derivatives from corresponding nitrooxymethyl derivatives

The convenient preparation of 6-fomylpyrimidinedione derivatives and 2- and 3-formylpyridine are described. Thus, 5-bromo-1,3-dimethyl- ( 1a ), 5-bromo-3-methyl-1-(2-nitrooxyethyl)- ( 1b ), and 5-bromo-3-methyl-1-(3-nitrooxypropyl)-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidine-dione ( 1c ) were converted to the corresponding 6-formyl compounds 2a, 2b , and 2c , respectively, in excellent yields by the reaction with triethylamine and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane. These 6-formylpyrimidinedione derivatives are key intermediates for the preparation of 6-carbon-carbon substituted compounds, which are expected to be potential antitumor and antiviral agents. Similarly, 2-(and 3-)formylpyridine ( 9a (and 9b )) were obtained by the reaction of 2-(and 3)nitrooxymethylpyridine ( 8a (and 8b )) with 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane.     

Synthesis of 3,3′-(1,6-hexanediyl)bis-pyrimidine derivatives and 3,4-dithia[6.6](1.3)pyrimidinophane

Several 3,3′-(1,6-hexanediyl)bis[6-methyl-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione] derivatives ( 4a, 4b , and 4c ) were synthesized from 1,6-(hexanediyl)bis[6-methyl-2H-1,3-oxazine-2,4(3H)-dione] (3) . Compound 4c was converted to 6, which reacted with thiourea giving thiuronium salt 7 . 3,3′-(1,6-Hexanediyl)bis [1-(2-mercaptoethyl)-6-methyl-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione] (9) was obtained by the hydrolysis of 7 , and then 9 was oxidized to 12,22-dimethyl-3,4-dithia[6.6] (1.3)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2,4-dioxopyrimidinophane (10) .     

Hydrogen bonding in macrocyclic receptor systems

Abstract

The interactions of macrocyclic polyethers with alkali and alkaline earth cations have been well studied and much about their chemistry is now well understood. Less well examined or comprehended are hydrogen bond interactions. A combination of ion selective electrode binding constant determination techniques and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry are brought to bear on this problem. It is found that all-oxygen crown ethers and their derivatives exhibit quite different complexation behaviour with ammonium salts than do their various azacrown counterparts.     

On the Structure of Syndiotactic Poly(propylenes)

Propylene was polymerized with the catalyst system (C₂H₅)2A1C1/ VCk/ anisole at -78°C using various conditions. The resulting polymers were successively extracted by diethyl ether, hexane, and heptane, leaving the residue. The polymers of the four series were characterized by intrinsic viscosity, gel permeation chromatography, ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and by differential scanning calorimetry. The combined evidence from the various methods indicates that this catalyst system leads to stereoblock polymers which can be fractionated according to stereochemical composition and sequence length.

Edge proximity and matching extension in projective planar graphs

A graph $G$ with at least $2m+2$ vertices is said to be distance $d$ $m$-extendable if, for any matching $M$ of $G$ with $m$ edges in which the edges lie at distance at least $d$ pairwise, there exists a perfect matching of $G$ containing $M$. In this paper we prove that every 5-connected triangulation on the projective plane of even order is distance 3 7-extendable and distance 4 $m$-extendable for any $m$.     

Variations of the elastic constants of InSb near the covalent-metallic transition

Abstract

The pulse-echo-overlap method was used to measure the longitudinal and transverse wave velocities in single-crystal (100) and (111) samples of InSb up to 3 GPa at room temperature. The peculiar variations of the elastic constants were observed near the covalent-metallic transition.     

REACTION OF SULFUR CHLORIDE WITH ACETOPHENONE. II

Abstract

In a previous paper,¹ we reported the formation of a resinous material (1) from the reaction of sulfur chloride with acetophenone which, upon treatment with DMF, yielded phenylglyoxylthiodimethylamide (4). We now report two additional resinous materials (5, 6), resulting from bromination of sodium phenacylthiosulfate (3) and diphenacyl disulfide (7) respectively, both of which not only resemble resinous 1 in appearance, but also yield 4 upon treatment with DMF in aqueous alkali.

Resinous 1, 5, and 6 appear to have the same common basic structure and differ only in the number of sulfur atoms bonded between the common units. Cleavage at the sulfur-sulfur bonds and elimination of hydrogen halide then yields identical oxothioamides from 1, 5, or 6. The latter appears to be a general reaction, and several oxothioamides were prepared by this synthetic method from 1, 5, and 6 and various amides and amines.     

Syntheses,Structures, and Reactivities of Sulfur-Containing Cycloalkenes

Sulfur-containing cycloalkenes possessing disulfide units 1, 2, and 3 were obtained by oxidation of cis-disodium ethene-1,2-dithiolate, and their crystal structures were determined by the X-ray crystallographic analyses. Compound 1 was found to give the ring expansion product 3 in acetonitrile even at room temperature and also form reactive thioaldehyde under irradiation.
