Physically cross-linked, fibrillar hydrogel networks are formed by the self-assembly of β-hairpin peptide molecules with varying degrees of strand asymmetry. The peptide registry in the self-assembled state can be used as a design element to generate fibrils with twisting, nontwisting, or laminated morphology. The mass density of the networks varies significantly, and can be directly related to the local fibrillar morphology as evidenced by small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and in situ substantiation using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) under identical concentrations and conditions. Similarly, the density of the network is dependent on changes in the peptide concentration. Bulk rheological properties of the hydrogels can be correlated to the fibrillar nanostructure, with the stiffer, laminated fibrils forming networks with a higher G' as compared to the flexible, singular fibrillar networks.  相似文献

With the goal of minimizing the domain size for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we develop a new class of absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) that mimic the phonon absorption properties of an unbounded exterior. The proposed MD-ABCs are extensions of perfectly matched discrete layers (PMDLs), originally developed as an absorbing boundary condition for continuous wave propagation problems. Called MD-PMDL, this extension carefully targets the absorption of phonons, the high frequency waves, whose propagation properties are completely different from continuous waves. This paper presents the derivation of MD-PMDL for general lattice systems, followed by explicit application to one-dimensional and two-dimensional square lattice systems. The accuracy of MD-PMDL for phonon absorption is proven by analyzing reflection coefficients, and demonstrated through numerical experiments. Unlike existing MD-ABCs, MD-PMDL is local in both space and time and thus more efficient. Based on their favorable properties, it is concluded that MD-PMDL could provide a more effective alternative to existing MD-ABCs.  相似文献

Chemical investigations on the marine soft coral Lobophytum sp., collected from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, yielded two new acyl glycerol monoalkyl ethers along with two known compounds of this series (1a-d), and a new ceramide (4a). Dielectric spectroscopy is used to investigate the structure, molecular dynamics, and relaxation phenomena in electric‐field‐induced switchable dark conglomerate (DC) phases in a bent‐core liquid crystal. The DC phases are obtained by applying a high‐frequency ac electric field in the B1rev phase or by cooling under a dc or an ac field from the isotropic phase. Although the DC phases exhibit good electro‐optic switching properties, the dielectric parameters are different from those observed in typical lamellar SmCP phases and similar to those obtained in a non‐switchable DC phase. We therefore propose that the dielectric response and reduced intensity of the relaxation modes may be a general feature in DC phases and may owe its origin to the deformed layer structure in which certain molecular motions are impeded. Further, we find that in the field‐induced DC phases derived from the isotropic phase, the dielectric modes are affected by chiral segregation promoted by the applied field.  相似文献

A local density functional approximation for predicting the surface crystallization of a thermodynamically small system under gravity is described and tested. Using the model of the classical soft-sphere fluid, the state parameters for such systems are identified. A generalized phase diagram based upon the scaling variables is obtained; systems with the same reduced-state parameters exhibit identical profiles of thermodynamic properties such as density, pressure, and intrinsic chemical potential, measured in the direction of the applied field. The point-thermodynamic approximation of Rowlinson and the local density approximation of the density functional formalism are found to be remarkably accurate. A configurational temperature is defined and shown to agree with the corresponding kinetic temperature for inhomogeneous systems at equilibrium. The structural profiles at the crystal-fluid interface are indicative of a mesolayer of lower density crystal, not seen in the field-free isobaric crystal-liquid interface.  相似文献

The relationship between antioxidant and anticancer properties of probiotic bacterium strain Lactobacillus plantarum AS1 (AS1) in colon cancer induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) has been studied. In this study, an increased level of lipid peroxide (LPO) products and increased activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione-S transferase) and marker enzymes (alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase) in colon and plasma of cancer-bearing animals have been observed. AS1 was supplemented either before initiation or during initiation and selection/promotion phases of colon carcinogenesis and was found to be effective in altering lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activities and marker enzymes to a statistically significant level measured either in the colon and in the plasma. These alterations inclined towards normal in a time-dependent manner on AS1 supplementation. The mean tumor volume diameter and total number of tumors were found to be statistically decreased in AS1 pre- and post-treated rats. Furthermore, histopathological examination shows remarkable difference between control and treated groups. The in vitro antioxidant assay shows that AS1 has promising antioxidant property. These results demonstrate that AS1 strain can modulate the development of DMH-induced rat colon carcinogenesis through an antioxidant-dependent mechanism.  相似文献

β-hairpin peptide-based hydrogels are a class of injectable solid hydrogels that can deliver encapsulated cells or molecular therapies to a target site via syringe or catheter injection as a carrier material. These physical hydrogels can shear-thin and consequently flow as a low-viscosity material under a sufficient shear stress but immediately recover back into a solid upon removal of the stress, allowing them to be injected as preformed gel solids. Hydrogel behavior during flow was studied in a cylindrical capillary geometry that mimicked the actual situation of injection through a syringe needle in order to quantify effects of shear-thin injection delivery on hydrogel flow behavior and encapsulated cell payloads. It was observed that all β-hairpin peptide hydrogels investigated displayed a promising flow profile for injectable cell delivery: a central wide plug flow region where gel material and cell payloads experienced little or no shear rate, and a narrow shear zone close to the capillary wall where gel and cells were subject to shear deformation. The width of the plug flow region was found to be weakly dependent on hydrogel rigidity and flow rate. Live-dead assays were performed on encapsulated MG63 cells 3 h after injection flow and revealed that shear-thin delivery through the capillary had little impact on cell viability and the spatial distribution of encapsulated cell payloads. These observations help us to fundamentally understand how the gels flow during injection through a thin catheter and how they immediately restore mechanically and morphologically relative to preflow, static gels.  相似文献
