We study optical beams that are supported at the surface of a medium with a linear index potential and by a piecewise linear wedge-type potential. In the linear limit the modes are described by Airy functions. In the nonlinear regime we find families of solutions that bifurcate from the linear modes and study their stability for both self-focusing and self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearity. The total power of such nonlinear waves is finite without the need for apodization.  相似文献

Nearly equiatomic NiTi can exhibit pseudoelastic behavior due to reversible solid-to-solid stress induced phase transformation at room level temperatures. In tension, the transformation leads to localized deformation of several percent that tends to spread at nearly constant stress. The deformation is recovered upon unloading while again localized deformation is exhibited. Under compression, while still pseudoelastic, the transformation strains are smaller, the stress is higher, the response is monotonic, and the deformation is essentially homogeneous. This study examines how this texture-driven, complex material asymmetry affects a simple structure: the bending of a tube. To this end, NiTi tubes are bent in a custom four-point bending facility under rotation control and isothermal conditions. The phase transformations lead to a closed moment-rotation hysteresis comprised of loading and unloading moment plateaus. During loading, localized nucleation of martensite results in a high curvature for the transformed sections of the tube and low curvature for the untransformed. Martensite, which corresponds to the higher curvature regime, spreads gradually while the moment remains nearly constant. The nucleation of martensite is in the form of bands inclined to the axis of the tube that organize themselves into diamond shaped deformation patterns on the tensioned side of the structure. The patterns are similar to those observed in bending of steel tubes with Lüders bands, however, for NiTi they develop only on the tensioned side due to the material asymmetry. A lower moment plateau is traced upon unloading with similar localized bending and the erasure of the diamond deformation patterns. This complex behavior was found to repeat for a number of temperatures in the pseudoelastic regime of NiTi with the moment-rotation hysteresis moving to higher or lower moment levels depending on the temperature.  相似文献

In this work we present the statistical and criticality analysis of the very low frequency (VLF) sub-ionospheric propagation data recorded by a VLF/LF radio receiver which has recently been established at the University of West Attica in Athens (Greece). We investigate a very recent, strong (M6.9), and shallow earthquake (EQ) that occurred on 30 October 2020, very close to the northern coast of the island of Samos (Greece). We focus on the reception data from two VLF transmitters, located in Turkey and Israel, on the basis that the EQ’s epicenter was located within or very close to the 5th Fresnel zone, respectively, of the corresponding sub-ionospheric propagation path. Firstly, we employed in our study the conventional analyses known as the nighttime fluctuation method (NFM) and the terminator time method (TTM), aiming to reveal any statistical anomalies prior to the EQ’s occurrence. These analyses revealed statistical anomalies in the studied sub-ionospheric propagation paths within ~2 weeks and a few days before the EQ’s occurrence. Secondly, we performed criticality analysis using two well-established complex systems’ time series analysis methods—the natural time (NT) analysis method, and the method of critical fluctuations (MCF). The NT analysis method was applied to the VLF propagation quantities of the NFM, revealing criticality indications over a period of ~2 weeks prior to the Samos EQ, whereas MCF was applied to the raw receiver amplitude data, uncovering the time excerpts of the analyzed time series that present criticality which were closest before the Samos EQ. Interestingly, power-law indications were also found shortly after the EQ’s occurrence. However, it is shown that these do not correspond to criticality related to EQ preparation processes. Finally, it is noted that no other complex space-sourced or geophysical phenomenon that could disturb the lower ionosphere did occur during the studied time period or close after, corroborating the view that our results prior to the Samos EQ are likely related to this mainshock.  相似文献

Balsa wood is a natural cellular material with excellent stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratios as well as superior energy absorption characteristics. These properties are derived from the microstructure, which consists of long slender cells (tracheids) with approximately hexagonal crosssections that are arranged axially. Parenchyma are a second type of cells that are radially arranged in groups that periodically penetrate the tracheids (rays). Under compression in the axial direction the material exhibits a linearly elastic regime that terminates by the initiation of failure in the form of localized kinking. Subsequently, under displacement-controlled compression, a stress plateau is traced associated with the gradual spreading of crushing of the cells through the material. The material is less stiff and weaker in the tangential and radial directions. Compression in these directions crushes the tracheids laterally but results in a monotonically increasing response typical of lateral crushing of elastic honeycombs. The elastic and inelastic properties in the three directions have been established experimentally as a function of the wood density. The microstructure and its deformation modes under compression have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy. In the axial direction it was observed that in the majority of the tests, failure initiated by kinking in the axial–tangential plane. The local misalignment of tracheids in zones penetrated by rays ranged from 4° to 10° and axial compression results in shear in these zones. Measurement of the shear response and the shear strength in the planes of interest enabled estimation of the kinking stress using the Argon–Budiansky kinking model. The material strength predicted in this manner has been found to provide a bounding estimate of the axial strength for a broad range of wood densities. The energy absorption characteristics of the wood have also been measured and the specific energy absorption was found to be comparable to that of metallic honeycombs of the same relative density.  相似文献

The third-order nonlinear optical properties of fulleropyrrolidine and its salt as well as their reduced forms are investigated. Upon reduction, the response increases by up to, and sometimes more than, three orders of magnitude, giving values comparable to the largest ever reported.
