Human exploration missions to Mars will require the development of technologies for the utilization of the planet's own resources for the production of commodities. However, the Martian atmosphere contains large amounts of dust. The extraction of commodities from this atmosphere requires prior removal of this dust. We report on our development of an electrostatic precipitator able to collect Martian simulated dust particles in atmospheric conditions approaching those of Mars. Extensive experiments with an initial prototype in a simulated Martian atmosphere showed efficiencies of 99%. The design of a second prototype with aerosolized Martian simulated dust in a flow-through is described.  相似文献

The dielectric lifetime and corresponding damage morphology of polycarbonate/poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PC/P(VDF‐HFP)) layered systems are studied under constant direct current (DC) field. Melt blends of the two polymers are also considered for comparison. The dielectric lifetimes of the latter are systematically much shorter than the layered systems. The interfaces between the polymers act as flaws that induce up to two orders of magnitude difference between the layered and blend systems. The capacitance values versus time during breakdown progression exhibit an inversed S‐shape pattern. The three regimes in the S‐shape pattern are consecutively attributed to randomly isolated breakdowns, interconnecting breakdowns, and wearing‐out of the capacitor film. The film breakdown images during dielectric lifetime test confirmed the transition from randomly isolated breakdowns to interconnecting breakdowns. Delay differential equations can have “chaotic” solutions that can be used to mimic Brownian motion. Since a Brownian motion is random in its velocity, it is reasonable to think that a random number generator might be constructed from such a model. In this preliminary study, we consider one specific example of this and show that it satisfies criteria commonly employed in the testing of random number generators (from TestU01’s very stringent “Big Crush” battery of tests). A technique termed digit discarding, commonly used in both this generator and physical RNGs using laser feedback systems, is discussed with regard to the maximal Lyapunov exponent. Also, we benchmark the generator to a contemporary common method: the multiple recursive generator, MRG32k3a. Although our method is about 7 times slower than MRG32k3a, there is in principle no apparent limit on the number of possible values that can be generated from the scheme we present here.  相似文献

We briefly review the method by which the electron charge density of atomic systems is decomposed into unique volumes called bond bundles, which are characterized by well-defined and additive properties. We then show that boundaries of bond bundles topologically constrain their chemical reactivity. To illustrate this fact, we model the response of the bond bundles of ethane and ethene to electrophilic attack and from the results of these models posit that functional group properties can be inferred from the shapes of their bond bundles. By relating functionality to bond bundle shape, it is possible to see subtle changes in chemical reactivity that are otherwise difficult to explain, as is illustrated by comparing bond bundles through a series of impact sensitive polynitroaromatic molecules.  相似文献

The development of new classes of linearizations of square matrix polynomials that generalize the classical first and second Frobenius companion forms has attracted much attention in the last decade. Research in this area has two main goals: finding linearizations that retain whatever structure the original polynomial might possess, and improving properties that are essential for accurate numerical computation, such as eigenvalue condition numbers and backward errors. However, all recent progress on linearizations has been restricted to square matrix polynomials. Since rectangular polynomials arise in many applications, it is natural to investigate if the new classes of linearizations can be extended to rectangular polynomials. In this paper, the family of Fiedler linearizations is extended from square to rectangular matrix polynomials, and it is shown that minimal indices and bases of polynomials can be recovered from those of any linearization in this class via the same simple procedures developed previously for square polynomials. Fiedler linearizations are one of the most important classes of linearizations introduced in recent years, but their generalization to rectangular polynomials is nontrivial, and requires a completely different approach to the one used in the square case. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first class of new linearizations that has been generalized to rectangular polynomials.  相似文献

Analyses for value assignment in the renewal Standard Reference Materials® SRM 1598a Animal Serum and SRM 1577c Bovine Liver included extensive characterization by neutron activation analysis (NAA). Conventional instrumental NAA procedures were complemented by pre-irradiation chemical separations for the determination of Al, V, Mn, and Cu, radiochemical separations for the determination of Ag, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mo, Sb, and Se, and the use of (anti-) coincidence gamma-ray spectrometry systems for the instrumental determination of Ag, Cr, and Hg. The previous materials, SRMs 1598, 1577, and 1577b, were analyzed together with the new materials for quality control.  相似文献

Summary The thermal neutron prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (PGAA) facility, operated by the US Food and Drug Administration and National Institute of Standards and Technology Center for Neutron Research, has been redesigned to lower background radiation levels and improved analytical capabilities. Analysis of 22 element standards and food and botanical certified reference materials revealed significant sensitivity increases and lower limits of detection for H, B, C, N, Na, Al, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Fe, and Cd. Mass fractions for these elements, as well as Mg, Al, Si, Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu, I, Zn, Sm, and Gd, were determined for 6 dietary supplements.  相似文献
