Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oils of Ferula latisecta and Mozaffariania insignis from Iran

The hydrodistilled oils from the aerial parts of Ferula latisecta and Mozaffariania insignis, which is endemic to Iran, were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. (Z)-Ocimenone (32.4%), (E)-ocimenone (20.3%), and cis-pinocarvone (11.4%) were the main components among the 22 constituents characterized in the oil of F. latisecta, representing 87.7% of the total components detected. Twenty-five compounds were identified in the oil of M. insignis, representing 99.0% of the total oil, with octyl acetate (41.1%), β-pinene (30.3%), and α-pinene (23.9%) as the main constituents. The Oxidation of Heterogeneous Tl/Ni/P‐Alloys — Preparation and Crystal Structures of the Thallium Nickel Phosphates TlNi4(PO4)3, Tl4Ni7(PO4)6, and Tl2Ni4(P2O7)(PO4)2

Single crystals of the first anhydrous thallium nickel phosphates were prepared by reaction of heterogeneous Tl/Ni/P alloys with oxygen. TlNi₄(PO₄)₃ (pale‐yellow, orthorhombic, space group Cmc2₁, a = 6.441(2)Å, b = 16.410(4)Å, c = 9.624(2)Å, Z = 4) crystallizes with a structure closely related to that of NaNi₄(PO₄)₃. Tl₄Ni₇(PO₄)₆ (yellow‐brown, monoclinic, space group Cm, a = 10.711(1)Å, b = 14.275(2)Å, c = 6.688(2)Å, β = 103.50(2)°, Z = 8) is isotypic with Na₄Ni₇(PO₄)₆, and Tl₂Ni₄(P₂O₇)(PO₄)₂ (brown, monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 10.389(2)Å, b = 13.888(16)Å, c = 18.198(3)Å, β = 103.1(2)°, Z = 8) adopts the K₂Ni₄(P₂O₇)(PO₄)₂ structure. Tl₂Ni₄(P₂O₇)(PO₄)₂ could also be prepared in nearly single phase form by reaction of Tl₂CO₃, NiO, and (NH₄)₂HPO₄.     

N-halogeno-compounds. Part 9 [1]. Azoxy- and azo-arenes derived from 4-(dichloroamino)tetrafluoropyridine; crystal structure of trans-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl-onn-azoxy)pyridine

The nitrosoarenes ArNO (Ar = C₆H₅, 2-MeC₆H₄, 2,4,6- Me₃C₆H₂ and C₆F₅) have been condensed with 4-(dichloroamino)- tetrafluoropyridine to provide the azoxy-compounds py_FN$\text{N}\text{+}$($\text{N}\text{-}$)Ar (py_F = 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-pyridyl); de-oxygenation of the first three with triphenylphosphine or triethyl phosphite gave the corresponding azo-compounds, and the reverse reaction was achieved in the case of py_FNNC₆H₂Me₃-2,4,6 using peroxytrifluoroacetic acid. Thermolysis of 4-azidotetrafluoropyridine in the presence of pentafluoronitrosobenzene provided the perfluorinated azoxy-compound py_FN$\text{N}\text{+}$($\text{O}\text{-}$)C₆F₅. X-Ray methods have been used to determine the molecular geometry of py_FN$\text{N}\text{+}$($\text{O}\text{-}$)C₆H₂Me₃-2,4,6.     

A class of nonmixing dynamical systems with monotonic semigroup property

In order to illustrate the class of conservative dynamical systems for which a Boltzmann entropy can be obtained under finite coarse-graining [2], we consider dynamical systems defined by the shift transformation on K , where K is any finite set of integers. We give a class of non-Markovian invariant measures that verify the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation (equivalent to a Boltzmann entropy) for any positive stochastic matrix and that are ergodic but not weakly mixing.     

Half-life of41Ca

The half-life of⁴¹Ca has been redetermined to be (1.01 ±0.10)×10⁵ yr from the specific activity of a sample of enriched calcium material and its⁴¹Ca concentration. The activity was measured with a Si(Li) detector via the 3.3-keV X rays emitted in the electron capture decay of⁴¹Ca to⁴¹K. The⁴¹Ca concentration was measured by mass spectrometry. Since our result agrees well with the two most recent half-life measurements of Mabuchi et al. (1974), (1.13±0.12)×10⁵ yr, and Klein et al. (1990), (1.03±0.07)×10⁵ yr, we recommend the weighted mean of these three measurements, t_1/2=(1.04±0.05)×10⁵ yr, as the most accurate value of the half-life of⁴¹Ca.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. P. Syntheses and polymerizations of some vinyl monomers containing nitro- or fluorophthalimides

4-Nitro-N-vinylphthalimide ( 4 ) was synthesized by two different procedures. Compound 4 was not polymerizable or copolymerizable by AIBN. Poly(N-vinylphthalimide) ( 17 ) was prepared and partially nitrated at 10–25°C. N,N′-(1,2-Ethanediyl)bis(4-nitrophthalimide) ( 15 ) and N,N′-(1,3-propanediyl)bis(4-nitrophthalimide) ( 16 ) were prepared by the condensation of the corresponding diamine with phthalic anhydride followed by nitration of the condensation products. 4-Nitrophthalic anhydride was prepared by the hydrolysis of 15 . Four styrene-substituted phthalimide monomers were synthesized. These include N-(4-vinylphenyl)phthalimide ( 25a ), N-(4-vinylphenyl)-3-fluorophthalimide ( 25b ), N-(4-vinylphenyl)-3-nitrophthalimide ( 25c ), and N-(4-vinylphenyl)-4-nitrophthalimide ( 25d ). Monomers 25a and 25b were polymerized by freeradical initiator (AIBN), whereas monomers 25c and 25d were not polymerizable or copolymerizable by AIBN due to a strong inhibitive effect exerted by the nitrophthalimide group. Monomers 25c and 25d were cationically polymerized (BF₃·OEt₂). Monomer 25b and styrene were copolymerized and their reactivity ratios were r₁ = 1.7 and r₂ = 0.55, respectively. The prepared polymers are useful as backbone polymers for grafting living anionic polymers.     

Chemical Constituents of Brown Rice Grain (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Oryza sativa</Emphasis>)

One new compound 3,7,11,15,19-pentamethyl-9α,10α,11α,17α,18α-pentahydroxy-n-tetracosan-1-oxy-p-hydroxycaffeoate (oryzaterpenyl caffeoate) (1), together with three known fatty acids linoleic acid, stearic acid and myristic acid were isolated and identified from the rice grain of Oryza sativa. The structure of the new compound was elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques (¹H-¹HCOSY, ¹H-¹³C HETCOR) aided by EI-MS, and IR spectra. __________ Published in Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 6, pp. 535–537, November–December, 2005.     

Measurement of lead-210, bismuth-210, and polonium-210 in environmental samples

Mathematical equations governing the ratio of²¹⁰Bi/²¹⁰Pb and²¹⁰Po/²¹⁰Pb activities are used to explain the ingrowth of²¹⁰Bi and²¹⁰Po in environmental samples during post collection. Procedures are described for radiochemical separation of²¹⁰Pb,²¹⁰Bi, and²¹⁰Po in a state of radioactive disequilibrium and quantification by alpha- and beta-counting. Also, the special case is considered where²¹⁰Bi is in equilibrium with²¹⁰Pb, but both are in disequilibrium with²¹⁰Po. In this case, the activities of both²¹⁰Pb and²¹⁰Po are computed by measuring²¹⁰Po activity twice, using alpha-counting.     

Investigation of some pentasubstituted 1,4-dihydropyridines by means of fast ion bombardment,chemical ionization and electron impact mass spectrometry

Positive fast ion bombardment, positive chemical ionization (CI⁺) and positive electron impact (EI) ionization mass spectrometry were used to investigate a number of relatively large and structurally related organic molecules. Some of the major dissociation pathways observed in the CH₄-CI⁺ mass spectra are not present under NH₃-CI⁺ conditions, but are obtained in the collision-induced dissociation (CID) spectrum of the 50 eV MH⁺ molecular ion, formed in the latter reaction. The resemblance between the EI mass spectra and their fast ion bombardment counterparts, the effect of changing the energy of the bombarding Cs⁺ ion beam over the range 2–16 keV and the different degrees of internal excitation of ions formed in different CI reagent gases are discussed.
