Three-stage melting of an annelide-type copper complex. A new type of organized phase: Tegma crystals

The solid—solid phase transition of an annlide type copper complex are described. As the temperature is raised, three different constituents of the complex successively melt. In the temperature range 77–95°C, the polyethylene oxide chains and the paraffinic tail are both in a very mobile state while the copper complex sub-units still form a two-dimensional crystalline array.     

Ex-vivo determination of blood glucose by microdialysis in combination with infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy

Several biosensors have been developed for continuous monitoring of human blood glucose, which is desirable for insulin-dependent diabetic patients. Developments in the field of quantitative assays using infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy allow the determination of metabolites at low concentrations. The microdialysis technique can provide a continuous sampling of extracellular body fluids. As only compounds of low molecular weight are passed on, infrared spectrometric quantitation is eased considerably. Samples were obtained by microdialysis of human blood plasma and aqueous glucose solutions. Multivariate calibration by partial least-squares was evaluated for its analytical performance in ex-vivo blood glucose monitoring. Mean squared prediction errors obtained by cross validation were 5.4 mg/dL for dialysate samples from different patients and 1.3 mg/ dL for dialysates from glucose solutions. Further investigations were carried out to achieve miniaturization of the measuring and detection device.     

Anionic polymerization with alkaline earth counterion. III. Aging of oligo- and polystyryl-barium and -strontium in THF

The self-deactivation of polystyryl-barium and polystyryl-strontium in tetrahydrofuran (THF) results essentially from protonation by the solvent. The deactivation constant k_d of this reaction is independent of carbanion concentration, length, and functionality of chains. Relations of k_d with temperature are: polystyryl-barium: k_d = 6.25 × 10⁷ exp(-18,900/RT) sec^?1; polystyryl-strontium: k_d = 4.1 × 10⁶ exp(?16,000/RT) sec^?1. The self-deactivation of α,ω-dicarbanionic oligostyryl-barium is a nonrandomlike reaction. Residual living oligomers are left dicarbanionic even if an important deactivation occurs.     

Determination of trace levels of pyrethroid metabolites in human urine by capillary gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry with negative chemical ionization

Summary Applications of high-resolution gas chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for identification and quantitation of trace amounts of pyrethroid metabolites in human urine samples are demonstrated. The method covers the pyrethroid metabolitescis- andtrans-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethyl-cyclopropane carboxylic acid (cis- andtrans-DCCA),cis-3-(2,2-dibromovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid (cis-DBCA), 4-fluoro-3-phenoxybenzoic acid (FPBA), and 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA). After acid-induced hydrolysis of urine samples and exhaustive solvent extraction, a carbodiimide-coupled esterification of the free carboxylic acids with hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) is applied. Identification of the derivatives formed is achieved by low-resolution electron-impact mass spectrometry (EIMS) using an ion-trap detector. Quantitation was by capillary gas chromatography—high-resolution mass spectrometry using negative chemical ionization (GC-NCIMS). 2-Phenoxybenzoic acid (2-PBA) served as internal standard. The limits of detection forcis- andtrans-DCCA,cis-DBCA, FPBA and 3-PBA were 0.03 μg L⁻¹ or below. The applicability of the presented method was tested on urine samples of persons exposed to low levels of pyrethroids.
