Synthetic macrocyclic ligands. III. Synthesis of a quinone-hydroquinone redox system incorporated with complexing ability toward cations

Two quinones bridged with a polyether chain and the corresponding hydroquinones were synthesized, and their redox reaction and complexations with sodium and potassium ions were observed.     

Mercuric triflate catalyzed hydroxylative carbocyclization of 1,6-enynes

[reaction: see text] Hg(OTf)(2) exhibits remarkable catalytic activity for the hydroxylative cyclization of 1,6-enynes. The present procedure should involve a sequence of mercuration of a terminal alkyne, carbocyclization, hydration, and protodemercuration that regenerates the catalyst.     

Interfacial effects on thermoelectric functions

We investigated the effects of added oxide to FeSi₂ on thermoelectric properties in order to improve the figure of merit. The oxide was not suggested to chemically react with the mother material (FeSi₂), where the oxide materials existed in the grain boundaries. The oxide addition played a role to reduce thermal conductivity and possessed electrical resistivity as well as non oxide-added FeSi₂. Hereafter, the appropriate added amount of Yb₂O₃ showed the largest effect on the figure of merit among other oxides.     

Mesogenicity of testosterone and estrone derivatives

Mesogenicity of 3β, 17β-bis(4-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy) androstene homologues (BABA) (carbon No. of alkoxy group, n, = 1-10) were studied by use of D.S.C. and a polarized microscopy. It was found that the n = 4-10 compounds of BABA have one cholesteric mesophase with high thermal stability enantiotropically, and that the n = 1-3 compounds decompose just above the melting point. Mesogenicities of BABA and several testosterone and estrone derivatives were also discussed from the perspective of chemical structure and shape. The presence of an intramolecular long-range dipole coupling in two alkoxybenzoyloxy chromophores is found in BABA from CD spectral studies.     

Total synthesis of citridone A

The first total synthesis of citridone A has been achieved through regioselective intramolecular iodocyclization and regio- and stereoselective Pd(0)-catalyzed coupling as key reactions.
