An improved backreflection technique is proposed to perform the spectral-resolved measurement of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical fibers. This technique is based on the PMD dynamical equation and realized by measuring the polarization state evolutions of the reflected signal in both frequency and time domains. Two experimental setups, employing the far-end Fresnel reflection, are constructed to verify this technique. We report the fabrication of a tunable all-solid photonic bandgap fiber coupler based on the side-polishing technique. This device is believed to be the first demonstration of a photonic bandgap fiber coupler to eliminate the contamination of the open air holes. By adjusting the length of the interaction section, the tunable coupling ratio as much as 92.5% at 1550 nm is achieved. The investigation of the spectrum properties shows that the coupler has excellent tunability properties, for which the coupling ratio can be smoothly and continuously controlled. 相似文献

We propose a novel scheme to generate ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle pulses based on cross-phase modulation (XPM) of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The proposed system consists of a SOA and an optical bandpass filter (OBF). Due to the XPM, a continuous wave (CW) probe signal is phase modulated by another optical Gauss pulse in the SOA. The OBF will convert the phase modulation to intensity modulation. A pair of polarity-reversed UWB monocycle pulses is achieved by locating the probe carrier at the positive and negative linear slopes of the OBF. Both cases conform to the UWB definition of the Federal Communications Commission. 相似文献

We report the fabrication and characterization of a new type all-solid photonic bandgap fiber. By introducing an index depressed layer around the high-index rod in the unit cell of photonic crystal cladding, transmission loss as low as 2 dB/km within the first bandgap is realized for the all-solid photonic bandgap fiber with a bandwidth of over 700 nm. The bend loss experiment shows that the photonic bandgap fiber is much less bend sensitive than single-mode fiber. 相似文献

During food emulsification and processing of sunflower oil (most used edible oil), a metallic and rancid odour has been detected only for insonated oil and foods. Some off-flavour compounds (hexanal and hept-2-enal) resulting from the sono-degradation of sunflower oil have been identified. A wide variety of analytical techniques (GC determination of fatty acids, UV spectroscopy, free fatty acids and GC/MS) were used to follow the quality of insonated sunflower oil and emulsion. Porous structures containing pores at different length scales are often encountered in nature and are important in many applications. While several processing routes have been demonstrated to create such hierarchical porous materials, most methods either require chemical gelation reactions or do not allow for the desired control of pore sizes over multiple length scales. We describe a versatile and simple approach to produce tailor-made hierarchical porous materials that relies solely on the process of drying. Our results show that simple drying of a complex suspension can lead to the self-assembly of droplets, colloidal particles and molecular species into unique 3D hierarchical porous structures. Using a microfluidic device to produce monodisperse templating droplets of tunable size, we prepared materials with up to three levels of hierarchy exhibiting monodisperse pores ranging from 10 nm to 800 μm. While the size of macropores obtained after drying is determined by the size of initial droplets, the interconnectivity between macropores is strongly affected by the type of droplet stabilizer (surfactants or particles). This simple route can be used to prepare porous materials of many chemical compositions and has great potential for creating artificial porous structures that capture some of the exquisite hierarchical features of porous biological materials. 相似文献

Abstract The bit error rate (BER) performance of an optical soliton communication system is analyzed. Based on the jitter variance equation and the chi-square distribution for the amplified spontaneous emission noise, an analytic expression for the BER calculation is obtained. We have investigated the effects of Gordon-Haus jitter, which is due to the random phase shift of the soliton individual central wavelength induced by the amplified spontaneous emission noise of the amplifiers. A novel multipath Mach–Zehnder interferometer (m-MZI) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which is fabricated by fusion splicing a segment of all-solid multi-core fiber (MCF) between two sections of single mode fiber-28 with a well-controlled lateral offset at the splice points. Beam propagation method-based simulation results demonstrated light passing throw MCF from multiple paths. Experiments with different lengths of MCF were implemented to investigate our proposed m-MZI’s response to temperature and strain. Compared with previously reported optical fiber modal interferometers, higher phase sensitivity can be obtained in our scheme due to the multipath interference configuration embedded in one fiber. A very high temperature sensitivity of 130.6 pm/°C has been achieved, and the maximum strain sensitivity is less than 0.284 pm/με in all experiments. A record low strain-to-temperature cross-sensitivity of 6.2 × 10?4 °C/με has been realized, and it shows great significance of this in-fiber integrated multipath Mach–Zehnder interferometer in practical temperature sensing applications. 相似文献
