Structure and dynamics of self-assembled poly(ethylene glycol) based coiled-coil nano-objects.

Herein we describe the structure and dynamics of self-assembled nano-objects generated from poly(ethylene glycol) based (PEG-ylated) coiled-coil hybrid block copolymers. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments on spin-labeled samples provided a strong indication for a parallel alignment of the peptide helices in at least the dimeric coiled-coil nano-object and indicated that the PEG chains are folded rather closely around the peptide core of the nano-objects. The EPR results were supported by AFM studies, which revealed the presence of discrete nanosized objects in thin, spin cast films of the block copolymers on mica substrates. Since their size and structure may be engineered via directed mutations in the amino acid sequence, these nano-objects may be interesting building blocks for the development of supramolecular materials with various potential applications.     

The hydrophobic effect in aqueous solutions of nonelectrolytes. I. Self-interactions of alkylureas

In order to clarify some aspects of the hydrophobic interactions, the enthalpies of dilution of monoethylurea, 1,3-dimethylurea, and 1,3-diethylurea have been determined calorimetrically at 25°C. The calorimetric data, expressed in terms of excess enthalpy, permit the evaluation of the pair and triplet interaction coefficients. The analyses of these and of the analogous coefficientsg _xx andg _xxx, derived from osmotic data, indicate a driving force favorable to the interactions among the hydrated solute molecules. Nevertheless, the positive values of theh _xx andh _xxx coefficients seem to suggest that the source of the effect is a rearrangement of the water molecules rather than a direct association of the solute molecules. There are evidences of a strict correlation between the enthalpic and the entropic effects. Preliminary data were presented at the International Conferences on Chemical Thermodynamics at Baden (1973) and Montpellier (1975). In situ spectroscopic study of the oxidation and reduction of Pd(111)

Using a photoemission spectroscometer that operates close to ambient conditions of pressure and temperature we have determined the Pd-O phase diagram and the kinetic parameters of phase transformations. We found that on the (111) surface oxidation proceeds by formation of stable and metastable structures. As the chemical potential of O2 increases chemisorbed oxygen forms followed by a thin surface oxide. Bulk oxidation is a two-step process that starts with the metastable growth of the surface oxide into the bulk, followed by a first-order transformation to PdO.     

Use of solid-phase micro-extraction as a sampling technique in the determination of volatiles emitted by flowers,isolated flower parts and pollen

The volatiles emitted by fresh whole flowers or isolated flower parts of mandarin, Citrus deliciosa Ten. (Rutaceae), were sampled using solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME). This technique offers several advantages over dynamic headspace sampling techniques used in previous investigations. In particular, SPME requires smaller sample sizes and very short sampling times, which can minimize the formation of artifacts due to damage to the plant, and contaminations or loss of compounds. This was especially applicable to the collection of volatiles from pollen.     

New Nitrogenous Bisabolene‐Type Sesquiterpenes from a Hainan Sponge Axinyssa aff. variabilis

Two new uncommon nitrogenous sesquiterpenes, 11‐ethoxy‐3‐formamidotheonellin ( 1 ) and 7‐ethoxy‐3‐formamidobisabolane‐8,10‐diene ( 2 ), together with two known related sesquiterpenes, 3‐formamidotheonellin (=theonellin formamide; 3 ) and theonellin isothiocyanate ( 4 ), were isolated from the Hainan sponge Axinyssa aff. variabilis. Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis and by comparison of their NMR data with those of known compounds.     

Topotactic reversible phase transition between room-temperature and a new low-temperature modification in the MCl3(THF)3 system

Both single crystals of VCl₃(THF)₃ as well as isotypic cocrystals of the composition MCl₃(THF)₃, M=Ti/V 1/3, undergo a topotactic reversible phase transition to a hitherto unknown low-temperature modification. The close relationship between this new structure and the room-temperature phase determined by Cottonet al. is discussed from the molecular and the intermolecular point of view: Both modifications are built up by conformationally very similar molecules which change their arrangement during the phase transition. Lattice energy calculations confirm that these two alternative arrangements correspond to minima of almost the same packing energy.Dedicated to Professor Dr. G. E.
