Thermal Studies on Some Substituted Aminobenzoic Acids

The thermal behaviour of various substituted aminobenzoic acids(3-aminobenzoic acid (3-ABA), 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA), 3-aminosalicylic acid(3-ASA), 4-aminosalicylic acid (4-ASA), and 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), as well as the‘parent’ benzoic acid (BA) and salicylic acid (SA) as reference substances, and possible decomposition products: 2-aminophenol (2-AP), 3-aminophenol (3-AP) and 4-aminophenol(4-AP) in the solid state has been examined. The various sets of isomers studied showed considerable and interesting differences. Most sublimed well before melting, generally with an increasing rate of mass loss beyond their very different melting points. The differences in behaviour of 4-ASA and 5-ASA were the most remarkable, with 5-ASA being far more stable and apparently not decarboxylating readily, while 4-ASA sublimed at temperatures below the melting point, becoming less stable and decarboxylating in the liquid form. Analytical method for assessing exposure of greenhouse applicators to procymidone by gas chromatography and whole body dosimetry

Summary An analytical method for the determination of the potential and actual exposure of agricultural workers to procymidone has been developed. The methodology is based on the whole body technique, using Tyvek Pro-Tech and Sontara as sampling media, and uses hexane extraction, GC-ECD analysis and GC-MSD confirmation. The validation of the analytical method has been carried out incorporating the matrix of coverall in all steps when calculating parameters such as retention time window, limits of detection and quantification, linear ranges and precision. A field sampling strategy has also been developed and the method has been applied to the evaluation of the potential and actual dermal exposure of an applicator and an assistant in normal working conditions.

Comparing representations and reasoning in children and adolescents with two-year college students

Problem solving and justification of a diversified group of two-year college students was compared with approaches of younger elementary and secondary school students working on the same tasks. The students in this study were engaged in thoughtful mathematics. Both groups found patterns, justified that their patterns were reasonable and, utilized similar strategies for their solutions and methods of justification. They were also able to make connections and build isomorphisms among the various problems.     

Cardiac arrhythmias and circle maps-A classical problem

The periodic forcing of nonlinear oscillations can often be cast as a problem involving self-maps of the circle. Consideration of the effects of changes in the frequency and amplitude of the periodic forcing leads to a problem involving the bifurcations of circle maps in a two-dimensional parameter space. The global bifurcations in this two-dimensional parameter space is described for periodic forcing of several simple theoretical models of nonlinear oscillations. As was originally recognized by Arnold, one motivation for the formulation of these models is their connection with theoretical models of cardiac arrhythmias originating from the competition and interaction between two pacemakers for the control of the heart.
