Depression is on the rise globally and expected to lead in global burden of diseases by 2030. The current therapy has serious limitations in terms of safety, efficacy, tolerability and therapeutic success. This review, based on the literature of the last decade, is aimed at exploring the preclinical profile of plant-based saponins (the abundant secondary metabolite) as an emerging therapy for depression. Enough scientific evidences reflect that saponins promote neurogenesis, restore monoaminergic tone and enhance neurotrophic factors. In multiple stress models, they have exhibited adaptogenic effects via normalising hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal axis, corticosterone levels and oxidative stress. Scientific data revealed neuroprotective effect of saponins by inhibiting apoptosis and intraneuronal calcium dynamics. Many plants possessing saponins as their principal antidepressant moiety need investigation at clinical level. Last decade literature revealed numerous preclinical reports supporting the role of saponins as natural cure for depression and justified their inclusion in antidepressant drug discovery programs. 相似文献

Nonracemic rose oxides were synthesized from racemic or nonracemic monoterpene alcohol citronellol by a novel chemo and chemo‐enzymatic route. After the key step of bromomethoxylation of citronellol, the intermediate was dehydrobrominated by a base, followed by an acid catalyzed demethoxylation along with cyclization to furnish rose oxides in high yield. The racemic dehydrobrominated precursor was also kinetically resolved using various lipases to produce nonracemic rose oxides. 相似文献

This paper describes the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities and phenolic components of different solvent (absolute methanol, absolute ethanol, absolute acetone, 80% methanol, 80% ethanol, 80% acetone and deionized water) extracts of leaves, flowers and bark of Gold Mohar [Delonix regia (Bojer ex Hook.) Raf.]. The extract yields from leaves, flowers and bark ranged from 10.19 to 36.24, 12.97 to 48.47 and 4.22 to 8.48 g/100 g dry weight (DW), respectively. Overall, 80% methanol extract produced from the leaves exhibited significantly (P < 0.05) higher antioxidant activity, with high phenolic contents (3.63 g GAE/100 g DW), total flavonoid contents (1.19 g CE/100 g DW), inhibition of peroxidation (85.54%), DPPH scavenging capacity (IC(50) value 8.89 μg/mL) and reducing power (1.87). Similarly, this 80% methanol leaves extract also showed superior antimicrobial activity. HPLC analysis of the 80% methanol extracts for individual phenolics revealed the presence of gallic, protocatechuic and salicylic acid in leaves; gallic, protocatechuic, salicylic, trans-cinnamic and chlorogenic acid in flowers, and gallic acid in bark as the main (amount > 1.50 mg/100 g DW) phenolic acids. Besides, small amounts ( < 1.50 mg/100 g DW) of some other phenolic acids such as sorbic, sinapic, p-coumaric, m-coumaric, ferulic, caffeic, 3-hydroxybenzoic, 4-hydroxycinnamic and 4-hydroxybenzoic acids were also detected. The extracts of the tested parts of Gold Mohar, especially, the leaves, might be valuable for functional food and therapeutic applications. 相似文献

A simple and rapid cloud point extraction (CPE) procedure was applied for preconcentration of trace quantities of arsenic (As) in scalp hair samples. The samples were subjected to microwave-assisted digestion in a mixture of nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide (2 + 1, v/v) prior to preconcentration by CPE. The As in digested samples was complexed with ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC), and the resultant As-PDC complex was extracted by a nonionic surfactant, octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol (Triton X-114). After centrifugation, the surfactant-rich phase was diluted with 0.1 M HNO3 in methanol and analyzed by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The experimental parameters, i.e., amount of APDC, concentration of Triton X-114, equilibrium temperature and time, were optimized. For validation of the proposed method, a certified reference material (CRM) of human hair (BCR 397) was used. No significant difference (P > 0.05) was observed between the experimental results and certified values of the CRM (paired t-test). The LOD and LOQ obtained under the optimal conditions were 0.025 and 0.083 microg/kg, respectively. The developed method was applied for the determination of As in scalp hair samples from male and female subjects of two villages of Khairpur Mir's, Pakistan. 相似文献

New substituted and unsubstituted phenol based mesogene series having an azo central linkage was synthesized by fixing phenol as rigid core unit with aromatic amine. The terminal –OH group was esterified successively by long alkyl chain acid chloride of variable length (n=2, 6, 11, 15, 17). All 25 synthesized compounds exhibit mesomorphism. The effect of side chain length and substituents on the stability of liquid crystals was studied. The study reveals that nitro substituent destabilizes nematic and smectic phases more than floro substituent. Furthermore, the transition temperature decreases as the length of side chain increases. 相似文献

This paper describes the development of a normal-phase liquid chromatograph-UV-diode array detection-positive ion atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometry method for the simultaneous identification and quantitation of cholesterol, androst-4-ene-3,17-dione (AD), and androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione (ADD) in fermentation broths. The compounds detected under positive ion atmospheric pressure chemical ionization on a mass spectrometer by selected ion monitoring are separated by normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. [M+H]+ ions are taken into consideration for quantitation of AD and ADD, and [M-H2O+H]+ ions are considered for quantitation of cholesterol. The compounds are analyzed on a Si60 silica (5 microm, 125 x 4-mm i.d.) Merck column using a 2:3 isocratic mixture of isopropyl alcohol and hexane. The calibration curves resulting from the reference compounds in the concentration range of 100-5000 pg on column exhibit a good linear correlation (r2 > or = 0.996). The method is validated by analyzing six replicates of broth samples fortified with three compounds, namely, cholesterol, AD, and ADD, at 0.050 and 0.5 microg/g levels. The mean recoveries for the fortifications range from 90% to 98% with relative standard deviations in the range of 3.36% to 9.78%. The method is developed to study the qualitative as well as quantitative conversion of cholesterol to AD and ADD by a microorganism identified as Nocardia sp. These studies helped the investigation of the reaction kinetics, which showed that the molar biotransformation of cholesterol into AD and ADD was 21%, even when the reaction was prolonged for 96 h. 相似文献
