The use of polyanion and polycation-sensitive membrane electrodes to detect five different preparations of fucoidan is described. Unlike linear polyanionic molecules previously measured with polymer membrane-based electrochemical sensors, fucoidans from marine brown algae are all highly branched, sulfated polysaccharides with varying charge densities and structures, depending on the species of seaweed, method of extraction used and extent of purification. When tridodecylmethylammonium (TDMA) was used as the ion-exchanger, a large, non-equilibrium EMF response was observed over a concentration range of 0.5–50 μg mL−1 fucoidan. Fucoidan was also measured by titration with polycationic protamine, using a dinonylnaphthalene sulfonate (DNNS)-doped membrane electrode as the potentiometric endpoint detector. Potentiometric titration was used to determine the binding ratio between protamine and fucoidan at the neutralization endpoint for each fucoidan preparation. This binding ratio was then used to successfully determine the fucoidan content of commercially available nutritional supplements. Fucoidan was also measured in undiluted blood serum, demonstrating that this method may be applicable for measuring fucoidan for clinical applications.  相似文献

In nature, some peptides induce precipitation of silicic acid into silica nanoparticles such as is found in marine algae called diatoms. However, polybasic polymers can act as peptide mimics; one such polymer, polyethyleneimine (PEI), has the advantage that it is stable at room temperature and is inexpensive, in comparison with synthetic peptides. We describe the fabrication and characterization of biosilicate nanoparticles formed by mimicking the peptides using PEI. Brownian motion nanoparticle tracking analysis and field emission gun scanning electron microscopy have been used for the first time to characterize nanoparticles made with tetramethyl orthosilicate (TMOS) and PEI to investigate the fundamental factors that affect particle properties. These factors include the effect of phosphate concentration, PEI molecular weight, TMOS concentration, and species of alkoxy-silane used. The properties of the particles are compared with other particles made with polymers that induce silication. Our results show that using PEI gives differences in particle size compared with previous work using other polymers that induce silication. The entrapment of enzymes during the silication process, rationale for using nonphosphate and phosphate buffers during enzyme entrapment, and the analysis of enzyme activity are also presented. Because enzymes can be entrapped during fabrication, it means that there are many future possibilities for the use of silicate nanoparticles containing enzymes, such as biosensors and biocatalytic reactors.  相似文献

Mixtures containing ammonia-borane and sec-butylamine-borane remain liquid throughout the hydrogen release process that affords tri(N-sec-butyl)borazine and polyborazylene. Concentrated solutions with metal catalysts afford >5 wt% H(2) in 1 h at 80 °C and addition of (EMIM)EtSO(4) ionic liquid co-solvent eliminates competing formation of insoluble linear poly(aminoborane) (EMIM = 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium).  相似文献

Most natural and man-made fibers have circular cross-sections; thus the properties of materials composed of non-circular fibers are largely unexplored. We demonstrate the technology for fabricating fibers with predetermined cross-sectional shape. Passive hydrodynamic focusing and UV polymerization of a shaped acrylate stream produced metre-long fibers for structural and mechanical characterization.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between different types of professional development, teachers' instructional practices, and the achievement of students in science and mathematics. The types of professional development studied included immersion, examining practice, curriculum implementation, curriculum development, and collaborative work. Data regarding teachers' instructional practices and the amount of professional development were collected using teacher surveys. Ninety‐four middle school science teachers and 104 middle school mathematics teachers participated in the study. Student achievement was measured using eighth grade state science and mathematics achievement test data. Regression analyses suggested that for both science and mathematics teachers, examining practice and curriculum development were significantly related to the use of standards‐based instructional practices. Only curriculum development for mathematics teachers was significantly related to student achievement. Implications of results for the professional development of science and mathematics teachers are discussed.  相似文献

In order to demonstrate the usefulness of gassymmetrical galvanic ZrO2 solid electrolyte cells for the determination of NO, cell tensions caused by catalytically different active electrodes and thereby different oxygen partial pressures in N2/NO mixtures with a low oxygen concentration (<50 vol.-ppm) were measured in the temperature range of 500 to 800°C. Separate investigations demonstrated that the catalytic activity of Pt decreases with increasing sinter temperature (1000 to 1300°C), but is higher than the activity of perovskite type oxides La1?xSrxMeO3 (x=0.1.... 0.5; Me=Co, Mn, Fe, Cr). The activity of the perovskites decreases in the order Co>Mn ≈ Fe>Cr. Between different Pt electrodes changes of cell tension were measured when alternating between pure and NO containing nitrogen (e.g. 19.7 mV with 0.4 vol.-% NO). Cells with a Pt electrode and a perovskite electrode produce higher changes of the cell tension, but without going to zero in pure nitrogen due to own oxygen potentials of the mixed oxides.  相似文献

The solubility of oxygen in aqueous fluorocarbon emulsions has been measured directly for several perfluorocarbons and monobromo or monoiodo-perfluorocarbons. The measured oxygen solubilities are consistent with results for the solubility of oxygen in neat liquid perfluorinated organic compounds.  相似文献
