A one-pot synthesis to [(Me3Si)3SiSb]4; a potential precursor for Sb42-

The reaction of (Me(3)Si)(3)SiK[middle dot]18-crown-6 with SbCl(3)(3 : 1 equiv.) provides a simple route to the title complex [(Me(3)Si)(3)SiSb](4). The potassium base initially acts as a nucleophile and then as a coupling agent, forming Sb-Sb bonds.     

Synthesis of a deca-lithium cage containing an [(RN)2As(mu-NR)As(NR)2]4- tetraanion; a homologue of group 15 trianions of the type [E(NR)3]3-

The novel, deca-lithium cage [(mtaNHLi)(As2(Nmta)5)-Li(4).2thf]2 (1) (mtaN = 5-methylthiazolyl, C4H4N2S) contains an imido-bridged tetraanion [(mtaN)2As(mu-Nmta)-As(Nmta)2]4-, which represents a new type of multi-functional imido group 15 ligand framework (homologous with group 15 anions of the type [As(NR)3]3-).     

The use of solid-phase supported 1-N-piperazine-4-N-carboxaldehyde in Vilsmeier reactions

A Vilsmeier salt supported on solid phase was prepared using piperazine bound to Merrifield resin. Piperazine was selected because it contains two secondary amines: one of the amines is protected upon binding to the resin, and the second was formylated to give resin-1-N-piperazine-4-N-carboxaldehyde (9). Activation of the formamide with either bis(trichloromethyl)carbonate (BTC) or POCl(3) afforded the Vilsmeier salt 10. Several olefins were used to test the supported Vilsmeier reagent. The in-solution activation with BTC and POCl(3) of various secondary amides was also evaluated: dimethylformamide (1), N-methyformanilide (4), 4-formylmorpholine (5), and 1,4-dicarboxylpiperazine (6), which showed that amides with one additional heteroatom increase the yields in the Vilsmeier salt formation.     

Templating and selection in the formation of macrocycles containing [[P(micro-NtBu)(2)](micro-NH)](n) frameworks: observation of halide ion coordination

Amination of [ClP(micro-NtBu)](2) (1) using NH(3) in THF gives the cyclophospha(III)zane dimer [H(2)NP(micro-NtBu)](2) (2), in good yield. (31)P NMR spectroscopic studies of the reaction of 1 with 2 in THF/Et(3)N show that almost quantitative formation of the cyclic tetramer [[P(micro-NtBu)](2)(micro-NH)](4) (3) occurs. The remarkable selectivity of this reaction can (in part) be attributed to pre-organisation of 1 and 2, which prefer cis arrangements in the solid state and solution. The macrocycle 3 can be isolated in yields of 58-67 % using various reaction scales. The isolation of the major by-product of the reaction (ca. 0.5-1 % of samples of 3), the pentameric, host-guest complex [[P(micro-NtBu)(2)](2)(micro-NH)](5)(HCl).2 THF] (4.2 THF), gives a strong indication of the mechanism involved. In situ (31)P NMR spectroscopic studies support a stepwise condensation mechanism in which Cl(-) ions play an important role in templating and selection of 3 and 4. Amplification of the pentameric arrangement occurs in the presence of excess LiX (X=Cl, Br, I). In addition, the cyclisation reaction is solvent- and anion-dependent. The X-ray structures of 2 and 4.2 THF are reported.     

Unusually high phosphodiesterolytic activity of La(III) hydroxide complexes stabilized by glycine derivatives

Glycine and N,N-dimethylglycine stabilize La(III) hydroxide complexes of the type La2L2(OH)4 which possess phosphodiesterolytic activity close to that observed with most active tetravalent cations like Ce(IV).     

Maximizing the xylitol production from sugar cane bagasse hydrolysate by controlling the aeration rate

Batch fermentations of sugar cane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate treated for removing the inhibitors of the fermentation were performed byCandida guilliermondii FTI20037 for xylitol production. The fermentative parameters agitation and aeration rate were studied aiming the maximization of xylitol production from this agroindustrial residue. The maximal xylitol volumetric productivity (0.87 g/L h) and yield (0.67 g/g) were attained at 400/min and 0.45 v.v.m. (K_La 27/h). According to the results, a suitable control of the oxygen input permitting the xylitol formation from sugar cane bagasse hydrolysate is required for the development of an efficient fermentation process for large-scale applications.     

Unprecedented base effect on the synthesis of chiral phosphinate esters: A new route to P-chiral phosphine oxides of high enantiomeric purity

The stereochemical outcome of the reaction of chiral secondary alcohols with a phosphinyl chloride was found to be highly dependent on the achiral base used. Thus, the reaction of the readily available sugar derived carbinols, 1 and 2, with methylphenylphosphinyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine yields stereoselectively the corresponding Snp-phosphinates 3Sp and 5Sp in 94 and 92% diastereomeric excess (de). Simply changing the base from triethylamine to pyridine affords Rp-phosphinates 4Rp and 6Rp epimers to 3Sp and 5Sp at the phosphinyl phosphorus in 50 and 40% de respectively. These phosphinate esters were found to be good P-chiral transferring intermediates, they react with Grignard reagents under very mild conditions to give the corresponding phosphine oxides. Both enantiomers Sp- and Rp-o-anisylmethylphenylphosphine oxide (PAMPO) as well Sp- and Rp- methylphenylpropyl phosphine oxide were obained enantiomerically pure in high yields
