Mechanical properties of twist grain boundaries in Cu

In a previous paper we studied the Young's and shear modulus of a high-angle twist grain boundary (5) in Cu, using the EAM, and related it to the uniaxial strain derivatives of single crystals. In this paper, we discuss elastic properties of ten additional twist grain boundaries, from 8.8–43.6°. The monolayer Young's modulus at each boundary was calculated and found to be 20–50% higher than the bulk value for all eleven boundaries for both csl and type1 structures. The monolayer shear modulus at each boundary was calculated and found to be 93–98% lower than the bulk value for six grain boundaries with csl structure and found to decrease with increasing twist angle. The critical shear stress was also calculated for eleven boundaries with csl structure and found to roughly decrease with increasing twist angle.     

On the class numbers of certain Hilbert class fields

LetL/k be a finite Galois extension with Galois groupG, and a group extension. We study the existence of the Galois extensionM/L/k such that the canonical projection Gal(M/k)→Gal(L/k) coincides with the given homomorphismj:E→G and thatM/L is unramified.     

Base-labile tert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc) group on phenols

Phenols are deprotected with weak bases from their tert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc) derivatives. Boc deprotection with bases can avoid side reactions during the deprotection with acids. We note the lability of the Boc to bases and are able to utilize it as a new cleavage condition for synthetic studies.     

Convenient indole synthesis from 2-iodoanilines and terminal alkynes by the sequential Sonogashira reaction and the cyclization reaction promoted by tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF)

The sequential Sonogashira reaction and the cyclization reaction of various 2-iodoanilines and terminal alkynes in the presence of a palladium catalyst and tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) gave the corresponding 2-substituted indoles in good yields.     

Initiation of cationic polymerization of n-butyl vinyl ether by stable cation radicals of substituted phenothiazines

3,7-Diethyl- 10-phenylphenothiazine (DEPPT), a phenothiazine derivative whose 3,7- and 10-positions are blocked, was synthesized. Potentiostatic electrolysis of DEPPT in acetonitrile (ACN) in the presence of 0.1M of LiClO₄ at 0.7 V (vs. Ag/Ag/Cl) yielded the stable cation radical of DEPPT (DEPPT^+·) which was characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV-visible spectroscopy, and ESR spectrometry. Stable cation radicals of 10-phenylphenothiazine and 3,7-diethyl-10-methylphenothiazine were also prepared. The cationic polymerization of n-butyl vinyl ether was initiated by these cation radicals, including DEPPT^·+. The electron transfer mechanism for the initiation step, which we proposed previously, was supported by the fact that DEPPT^·+ was capable of initiating the polymerization; dimerization of DEPPT^·+ by releasing protons is precluded because 3,7- and 10-positions are all blocked. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Methyl groups as probes for proteins and complexes in in-cell NMR experiments

Studying protein components of large intracellular complexes by in-cell NMR has so far been impossible because the backbone resonances are unobservable due to their slow tumbling rates. We describe a methodology that overcomes this difficulty through selective labeling of methyl groups, which possess more favorable relaxation behavior. Comparison of different in-cell labeling schemes with three different proteins, calmodulin, NmerA, and FKBP, shows that selective labeling with [(13)C]methyl groups on methionine and alanine provides excellent sensitivity with low background levels at very low costs.     

Crystal structures and topochemical polymerizations of 7,7,8,8-tetrakis(alkoxycarbonyl)quinodimethanes

Highly conjugated monomers, 7,7,8,8-tetrakis(alkoxycarbonyl)quinodimethanes (methoxy (1a), ethoxy (1b), isopropoxy (1c), benzyloxy (1d), chloroethoxy (1e), and bromoethoxy (1f)), were synthesized. Recrystallizations of 1a, 1c, 1e, and 1f yielded two crystal forms (prisms (1a-A) and needles (1a-B), needles (1c-A) and plates (1c-B), prisms (1e-A) and plates (1e-B), and prisms (1f-A) and needles (1f-B)), which have different molecular packing modes by X-ray crystal structure analysis, indicating that the crystals are polymorphic. In the photopolymerizations of these monomer crystals in the solid state, 1a-A, 1e-A, and 1f-A polymerized topochemically to give crystalline polymers. For their thermal polymerizations in the solid state, in addition to 1a-A, 1e-A, and 1f-A, 1e-B and 1f-B polymerized, but polymers formed from the 1e-B and 1f-B were amorphous. The packing of quinodimethane molecules in the crystals was defined by four kinds of parameters, stacking distance (d(s)), the distance between the reacting exomethylene carbon atoms (d(cc)), the angles formed between the stacking axis and longer axis of the monomer molecule (theta(1)), and the shorter axis of the monomer molecule (theta(2)), and then the polymerization reactivity of these quinodimethanes in the solid state was discussed on the basis of these parameters.     

Tensammetric determination of microgram amounts of vanadium by catalytic oxidation of o-aminophenol

A tensammetric method is proposed for the determination of microgram amounts of vanadium, based on catalysis of the oxidation of o-aminophenol with sodium chlorate in acidic solution (pH 2.0). The oxidation product gives a very sensitive tensammetric wave; under optimum conditions, the wave-height is proportional to the concentration of va vanadium. From 0.2 to 3.0 mug of vanadium can be determined in a final volume of 50 ml. Mo(VI), W(VI), Mn(VII), Ce(IV) and large amounts of Al(III) and Fe(III) cause positive errors, and Hg(II) and thiosulphate negative errors. Interference from Fe(III), Al(III) and Cu(II) can be eliminated by solvent with oxine at about pH 8.0.     

Synthesis and central nervous system stimulant activity of 5,8-methanoquinazolines fused with imidazole,thiadiazole, pyrimidine and 1,3,5-triazine

5,8-Methanoquinazolines fused with imidazoles 4a-4b , thiadiazoles 5–6 , pyrimidines 7, 9, 11 and 12 , and 1,3,5-triazine 13 were prepared starting from (5R,8S)-2-amino-8,9,9-trimethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,8-methanoquinazoline 3 . Most compounds possessed central nervous system stimulant activities.     

Stabilities in field electron emissions from noble‐metal covered W nano‐tips: apex structure dependence

We observed field emission microscopy (FEM) patterns of noble‐metal (NM) covered W nano‐tips with three different apex structures fabricated by field evaporation. Each of the three tips was terminated with a single atom, three atoms or ten atoms. We investigated the temporal changes in the FEM of these tips to discuss the stabilities in the spatial distributions of the field emission (FE) beams. The single‐atom tip showed two characteristics that were superior to the others. First, the beams emitted from the single‐atom tip were the most collimated among the three tips (the semi‐cone angle of 1.0° , FWHM). Second, adsorption of residual gas had little influence on FE from the single‐atom tip, while the other tips were easily contaminated even at ultra high vacuum, resulting in the emission fluctuation.
