Enantioselective synthesis of endohedral metallofullerenes

Endohedral metallofullerenes are promising materials in biomedical and material sciences. In particular, they are of interest as agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), photovoltaic devices, and semimetallic components. The synthesis of chiral endofullerenes represents one step further in the potential use of these carbon allotropes; however, this step has not been addressed so far. In this regard, enantiopure endofullerenes are expected to open new avenues in fields in which chirality is a key issue. Here, the synthesis and characterization of the first chiral endohedral metallofullerenes, namely, chiral bis-adducts of La@C(72), are reported. Eight optically active isomers were obtained by enantioselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of a N-metalated azomethine ylide onto a non-isolated-pentagon rule metallofullerene derivative, La@C(72)(C(6)H(3)Cl(2)), catalyzed by a copper chiral complex. The chiral bis-adducts of La@C(72), isolated by nonchiral HPLC, showed optical purities as high as 98% as revealed by the remarkable positive or negative Cotton effects observed in the circular dichroic spectra.     

Regioselective bis-functionalization of endohedral dimetallofullerene, La2@C80: extremal La-La distance

Bis-functionalization of endohedral metallofullerene La(2)@C(80) by carbene addition is reported herein. Adducts were characterized using spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray structure analyses. Crystallographic data for bisadduct La(2)@C(80)(CClPh)Ad (3, Ad = adamantylidene) revealed that both carbene additions occur at the 6,6-bond junction on the C(80) cage with ring cleavages and that La atoms are positioned collinearly with spiro carbons. It is noteworthy that the La-La distance in 3 is highly elongated by carbene bis-functionalization compared to the distance in pristine La(2)@C(80) and reported functionalized derivatives. The metal positions were confirmed through density functional calculations.     

Conjugation of organic-metallic hybrid polymers and calf-thymus DNA

Strong electrostatic interaction between metallo-supramolecular polymers and DNA was confirmed by UV-vis and CD spectral measurements during titration, and cyclic voltammetry. The stable conjugation structure based on groove binding was revealed by using QM/MM computational methodology and supported by AFM.
